What I noticed during art competitions is: staff associated with the art center participates in the competitions, also the patrons. In doing this, it doesn't feel right nor fair that most of the staff and patrons won an award for their art pieces. I wish they would set a day for themselves to show off their talents separate from the competitions. Better yet, have their own competition participated by just the staff and patrons. Hope this review does not discourage the art center, but encourage them to do better, there is always room for improvement.

Even if you're not Vietnamese you can attend and feel welcomed. There were a lot of things this event could have done better but hey it's just their first time around so no harsh comments from me yet. They had a fashion show, government figures speaking, singers, dancers and acts from a lot of other cultures that aren't Vietnamese under the big tent. Can't wait to see what next year will bring !!

Going in, I think we were expecting something a little more free flowing and open creatively, more of an environment where there wasn't really a right or wrong way to create and kids could fully lean into their own ideas and style. What we found was that the class felt a bit more structured than we were personally looking for. That's not necessarily a bad thing at all, and I could definitely see how that style would work really well for kids who prefer more guidance and direction. It just ended up not being the best fit for my daughter's personality and the kind of creative environment we were hoping for. Everyone was nice, and the space itself was welcoming, it just ultimately wasn't quite the art experience we had envisioned for her. Helpful tip: If your child enjoys more structured instruction and guided projects, this may be a really good fit. If they prefer a more open-ended creative style, it's probably worth asking questions about the class format beforehand. Unfortunately it just didn't end up being the right fit for us personally.

They usually hold their event the same weekend as the annual Japanese cultural and food bazaar a few blocks away but this year in 2016, it was delayed another week due to scheduling conflict with their MC. I've really enjoyed their MCs in the past and MCs make all the difference in pow wows but this years' MC was horrible! I don't know if it's the same guy or not but it was night and day difference. Supposedly this guy is from the Bay Area? Please get a different one next year! The grand entrance normally starts at noon and it didn't start Til after 2pm, way hotter for everyone including the poor contestants. The pace was extremely slow this year. The food line to the one food vendor was outrageous and poorly organized. The young teenage girl taking orders on the right didn't want to take the next order until the food was prepared and given to the current customer. I asked why she did this as the line was unnecessarily long and all of us were miserable waiting under the blistering sun. I suggested she keep taking orders and just pass out the food as they come. She said she couldn't remember who ordered what to do that. Don't put someone at that position if they can't even remember 2-3 orders at a time. Even if they didn't remember what people order, people would be standing right there for their food so there is no chance of theft. Fry bread was overly priced too, $7 and up. Especially being the only food vendor, now i just call that greedy. I also don't agree with the $5 per adult entrance fee. Although this year had quite a few misses compared to previous years overall Sacramento pow wow is typically a 4 star event to bring your family but until they improve these gripes of mine I'm rating them 3. They have unique Native craft vendors to shop your heart out although I found that most of them are overpriced too.

They teach Tahitian and Hawaiian dancing. Down to the attitude, the teachers and students are soooo relaxed and just want to have fun there. Their prices are amazingly affordable and they have multiple class times throughout the week. The younger classes are separate from the older girls and they have many performances throughout the year to show off their skills. The mirrored dance studio is older but fits the need and price point in order to teach Hula Dancing for any budget!
