Jane's Corndogs is that quintessential beach side shack that serves all sorts of fried goodness that's suppose to be bad for you. I came here after I spent a good amount of time at one of the dive bars around the area and really, what better way to satisfy the munchies than to snack on some fried food? It's essentially a Hot Dog On A Stick with a blown up menu. There's corndogs, fried cheese, fries, nachos, funnel cakes, candied apples etc etc. Pretty much, whatever junk food you are craving, Jane's has it. With corndog as part of its namesake, I went with a corndog, and it is exactly what it is, a corndog. Fake looking hot dog then fried with the corn batter. Some ketchip, some mustard, and you are back to your childhood when you didn't care about your health and just ate whatever the hell you liked! I would go as far as to say their Cheese on a Stick changed my life. For the uninitiated, imagine a corndog but with a piece of cheddar cheese in place of the sausage. My friend took me here after a break up and I have to say that the food, the beach, and the company has helped me forget. I came here and was surprised at how tiny the little fast food place was. It was bright yellow and the inside was so bright and colorful. It felt so vintagey. The food is fresh to order. I got the french fries, which was $2.99. They were hot and crispy. Pretty good, considering they're fast food. Their lemonade is amazing. I love the sweet and tangy taste of it all. But its $4.00 for a large, and $3.00, for a dinky size. Great desserts and snacks. The only reason I gave them 3 stars instead of 5 is the customer service. The older gentleman is very rude and dismissive. Not sure if it's a cultural difference but just dont appreciate being yelled at and order around like I'm a child. I can hear you and will follow any directions within a conversational volume of voice and directions that have respect inculcated within. Please work on your customer service skills and try your best to not yell or order around your customers. They offer ice cream bars, huge pickles, frozen bananas, whatever you crave. It's family owned and operated and they're nice folks. They even have courtesy water if you ask. The prices were reasonable and the service was quick. The fries were very good and in my opinion, the perfect texture. Perfect amount of crunch and softness at the same time. My wife and I were hanging out on Newport Pier with our dog and her cousins and nieces that came down from Vegas. I remembered liking the corndogs here so we walked over (not far at all) to get some grub we could bring back outside. The corndog was as good as I remembered. They hand dip them them and make them in front of you. The funnel cake is damn good. Fried perfect and the right amount of powdered sugar. You can also pick different fruit toppings on the funnel cake. The chili cheese nachos are garbage. The chili tastes nasty and is really what ruins it. I had a jalapeno cheese on a stick that tasted above average but there was nothing spicy about it. Most everything really hit the spot and the kids were happy. Love Jane's Corndogs! FYI: these are not pre-made and microwaved. Jane's dips the dogs on sticks in the batter right in front of you and then deep fries them until they're nicely golden brown and ready to nom. Not a fan of corndogs? They also have a huge variety of other items like shaved ice, ice cream cones, frozen bananas, chili cheese fries, hot pretzels, cheesecake on a stick (dipped in chocolate and frozen...not fried), buttery corn on the cob, funnel cake, churros.... They even have regular coffee and espresso drinks. The only reason I won't give 5 stars is because they take cash only. However, they conveniently have a small ATM inside the shop. Not sure what the fee is to use it, but I don't think it's outrageous. And you'll be needing a decent amount of cash if you're shelling out for more than 2 people. A funnel cake with fruit topping (like boysenberry!) is around $7.50, churros are about $2.75/ea. Two corn dogs and a regular (16 oz) lemonade cost me $8.55. Since Jane's is right near the pier (and I would have to assume the rent isn't cheap for that location), I'm sure those prices won't deter tourists. Still, it does seem a bit on the high side for what it is. If you happen to be carousing with your buddies at any of the nearby bars, you're in luck! Jane's is open and operating until 2:30 a.m. Good greasy food to soften the blow of the next morning's inevitable hangover. (Even better when you're still hurting when the sun comes up, Jane's opens up around 9 a.m. Pop on your shades, get some more greasy food, a few shots of espresso then watch the waves roll in. While I'm not much of a party girl, I think a couple of aspirin might be a good call, too. ;) read more
