I've been in a few times and had great service, and we occasionally order to go food for the office and that is always good as well. Went here just to try it out. Very small place, our waiter was very short and seemed rushed. Eating here felt like I was lost in the middle of no where in the red neck woods. I didn't like the food I ordered and didn't even eat it. The waiter and the lady at the cash register didn't even bother to ask if anything was wrong with the food, but my friend outwardly told her I didn't even touch the food because it didn't taste good at all. She didn't even bother to ask what she can do or offer to discount the bill because we didn't even touch it. Anyways, we are from the Midwest so didn't want to argue or cause a scene and so we politely just paid in full and left. I wanted to just rate this place and warn everyone who are so used to good service and good food that they won't find it here. Sorry to say but that's my experience coming here. :( read more

$10.95 for bacon and eggs??? I went here in the past, food is just OK, nothing you can't get for a lot less. I also got a cinnamon roll completely smothered in some know of buttery spread yuck, only ate a couple of bites. The waitress never asked why I didn't eat it. Go down the street to Bonnie's special $5.95 for the same thing. There are plenty less expensive places to enjoy. read more

Good granola French toast, but omelette was tasteless, service slow, and irritating things such as waiting 10 min to get enough silverware, creamers brought to the table way after coffee was delivered, and an overall lack of friendliness. Home fries were absolutely bland and mushy. No amount of ketchup could save them. We won't be back. read more

I went for breakfast a week ago with my son and daughter. We had a Spanish omelet, Belgian waffles and pancakes. The omelet had some sort of red sauce and sliced bell peppers...there wasn't anything Spanish about it. The sauce wasn't very good and would be compared to Pace Picante's. I was expecting fluffy yummy Belgian waffles but they were extremely hard and we used a butter knife in a sawing motion to cut it up. The customer service was excellent and the restaurant was nice and clean. The food was mediocre at best. I spent $40 on food that didn't taste all that great. We would have been better off eating at Denny's or IHOP. read more

I ordered the chicken fried steak dinner with a salad to start. The salad was good. Very fresh and crisp tasting. Then my main dish came and all hell broke lose. My vegetables were cold on one end and warm on the other so I'm thinking they were hastily microwaved. Then the fries were undercooked. Almost raw tasting. THEN to top it all off the chicken fried steak was barely warm in the middle. I showed it to the waitress and asked for my money back as my appetite was gone and she went and asked the manager and the manager literally made me pay for all the bites I had taken out of the various dishes. I said why am I paying more than half for a horribly cooked dinner? The manager said, well you ate parts of it. I said I had to try it before I made a decision on whether or not it was cooked well enough or not! I paid the bill and left and will never return. What a horrible decision and an even worse manager. If you would've made it right I would've given you guys another shot but for a few bucks on one visit you lost three customers forever and have a negative review. I would give the food a 3 honestly. I had the biscuits and gravy with a side of sausage and they weren't special. I was expecting links but got two sausage patties which I also don't particularly care for. Coffee wasn't strong. Eggs were good. And from looking at other tables, the pancakes looked really good. Sorry but this place is extremely overrated and over priced! The price for my wife and I to eat this terrible meal was over $30 (without tip). The seating was cramped so much that we had to move our plates so people could get passed our table. The biscuits were not cooked and mushy and did not have a good taste while the gravy was just awful. The sausage patty was mediocre at best and the home fries were just tasteless. Janet's is a great place for breakfast & dinner. You get huge portions so you won't go away hungry. My first visit I got the spinach omelet made with 3 eggs, mushrooms, cheese. Then fresh fruit (instead of potatoes) and two big pancakes. I'm picky on my pancakes & these were very good not over done & not to heavy. Then a scoop of homemade ice cream w/hot fudge & whipped cream. Then a piece of chocolate peanut butter pie to go. The pies are amazing. Homemade realwhiped cream & the filling is cooked. If you just want dessert come for the pie & ask for Donna she is so attentive. The dinners are huge as well. I had (another visit) the Ham Steak very good w/corn, a dinner salad (fresh) cornbread, & dessert. Plus choice of potato or I could have had rice pilaf. I got a baked potato w/everything. My parents joined me on another occasion for breakfast & both said they will be back. Dad had biscuits & gravy. They were sad when Coco's closed, but after I got them to try the pies here they were sold. It's nice to have local small businesses to support as well. We are happy everytime we go to Janets Cafe in El Cajon. Everything always seem very fresh and the service is great. Tonight I had the short rib special and I could only finish 1/2 of my food. I thought it was nice that our server (a man) asked what kind of vegitables I wanted with it...I picked the broccoli :-) My husband had the turkey melt and it was piled high with turkey. Even the roll seemed fresh baked. We dont live in that area anymore but it is a nice treat to go out of our way to go there. Conveniently located, my colleagues and I frequent this spot. Today we decided on Janets for lunch. We like this place because they have friendly staff, extremely generous portion sizes no matter what you order, and daily specials. Most menu items are priced close to what I'm used to paying at an independent eatery that offers breakfast, pie, and a wide array of menu items ranging from quesadillas to meatloaf. Both of my buddies got dessert with their meals (and they give you a choice between cookies, brownie, or pie), but unfortunately I have to take a star away. Both of those cookies could have doubled as bricks, because they were hard enough to break a window if thrown hard enough. The cornbread muffins were lackluster also. My cheese quesadilla was delicious. The rice that came as a side was also impressive, since it tasted culturally authentic. I tasted but did not finish the refried beans, as I have never been a fan of them. Next time I'll ask for double rice. Then again, next time I might want breakfast for lunch!
