Avocado cheese omelette with toast and fruit and salsa
    Stephen C.

I had the worst luck turn into the best morning ever. We'd just finished at Menchie's when we discovered a flat tire in pouring rain--couldn't change it, so we Ubered home soaked and annoyed. Went back the next morning to get the tire fixed, and my son goes, "Hey, let's grab breakfast next door at Janet's Café!" Genius move. Walked in and ordered pumpkin pancakes the size of my head and an avocado omelette that was so buttery and perfect, with fruit, toast, and the best coffee I've had in forever. Even though we were still damp from the rain, that meal made everything better. If you're ever in El Cajon, hit up Janet's Café--it's warm, friendly, and feels like it's made for hard-working people. Just get there early because they close early! Totally turned a bad-luck day around.

I stop here every few years or so when one of my friends is feeling nostalgic. They've got a killer breakfast, and a pretty decent club sandwich. One of the best things on the menu, which isn't pictured here is that biscuits and gravy. They have fantastic servers and they really old school. Small diner vibe. The booths are a little small, but you can work with that. There's plenty of parking, so that shouldn't be an issue. If you're looking for a great breakfast or a little diner for some coffee and pie, this is gonna be your spot.

Had fantastic pancakes at Janet's - both the traditional and the cinnamon roll ones. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and they give you a side of salsa. For me the biscuits and gravy were just ok, needed a lot of pepper added and I didn't love the biscuit texture. Homey place with plenty of parking and seating. Service was quick and attentive but not rushed. Will be back!

    Machaca omelet with home fries
    Melissa R.

We love the homestyle vibe at Janet's. My husband had the machaca omelet which was the special for that day. He said it was very good and full of lots of flavor. You could tell the meat was homemade because there was a bay leaf in the omelet. My husband said the home fries were good but some of them were not cooked all the way and needed about 5 minutes more on the grill. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet with hashbrowns. The omelet and hashbrowns were so filling, I had to take half of it home. My toast was delicious with the perfect amount of butter. The server was so nice, she brought me alot of vanilla creamer for my coffee. For the amount of food you get and the great service, you definitely get a great value here at Janet's. We will definitely be returning again.

Wow what a great breakfast spot! I didn't even realize there was another location other than the santee one. Parking is a bit tight but man, worth it. They do have outdoor seating and saw some dogs on the patio. We came Sunday morning for brunch and our group of 4 was seated immediately. Menu is good size and staff were very friendly. They have this big pie display in the front and the slices are hugeeee! Everything is well priced and it was all so delicious. Heaping mound of butter on the pancakes which is perfect and all our plates were cooked perfectly. We also love we have all the condiments on the table already to make it accessible. I can't wait to bring more people here it may be my next new breakfast spot!!

    Biscuits and gravy
    R H.

It's a good restaurant. I have only had breakfast there. I like the biscuits and gravy. One person probably could not eat all of it and maybe they offer a smaller plate. I always get the full order of biscuits and gravy and share it or take some home. I like the sausage links too. It gets full inside during peak hours but they have outdoor seating. Good service, nice place to eat.

A five+ star rating goes to his Janet's Cafe today for great atmosphere with quick seating. Omlette with thick bacon and homemade salsa with a split cut of fresh avocado. We, the acquaintance and I were already planning to go in again on our way out the door!

We prefer the mom and pop's restaurant and this one has great food and servers. My 89 year old uncle is picky and he was impressed.

She knows her stuff-knows how to ask the right questions so that you get what you really want. For instance, I was on the fence about having biscuits and gravy but I asked if the gravy was really peppery. She offered to get me a small taste and although it was delicious, I've been a little under the weather so I decided I didn't want anything really heavy. Instead I ordered the 3 egg scramble with their smoked ham and added cheese-it was really good and a huge serving including their potatoes and English muffin. I'll probably be able to make two more meals from this serving! My husband ordered the eggs Benedict and asked which potatoes they would be able to make the most crispy as we both like our potatoes crispy. She suggested the hash browns and even asked if he wanted them crispy on both sides which was a great way to get them the way he wanted. Those kinds of gestures really make the difference when you're dining out. The eggs Benedict and the hash browns were delicious, btw. :) Camryn had a great personality too-very friendly, bright and quick. She did a great job of checking in on all of her tables. When we go back I hope we are lucky enough to have Camryn serve us again but all of the servers seemed very friendly as well. Great job, Izzy's and Camryn!

My husband and I have driven past many times and always felt curious. So finally we made a stop on our way home. Let me just say, it did not disappoint! Just be warned; cause like I said before this is a food cart in the parking lot of a liquor store. Nothing wrong with it but there isn't a lot of sit down options or anything like that. The concept is definitely unique. Their menu includes burgers, wraps, shawarma wraps, and street corn, with the option to add Hot Cheetos or Doritos to several menu items. I ordered the: *Doritos Grilled Chicken Breast Wrap: it comes served over a bed of French fries tossed with Doritos seasoning. The fries were flavorful, fresh, and definitely the highlight of the meal. The wrap itself was good, but I was expecting a much stronger Doritos flavor. There wasn't much of that signature taste inside the wrap, so it felt like a missed opportunity considering the concept. You can also upgrade your order with street corn mixed with Hot Cheetos or Doritos for an additional $2.99. My total, including tip, came to a little over $18. While that's a bit on the pricey side, the wrap was massive and easily enough for two meals. My food was ready in less than 10 minutes, and everything tasted fresh. Overall, it's a fun and creative concept with generous portions. I just wish they'd lean into the theme a bit more by adding more of that bold Doritos flavor to the wrap itself.

The bread was absolutely the best I've ever had!!! No reservations. Walk-ins only. Our party of 14 was quoted 1 hour of wait time. It only took about 30 minutes to be seated (not bad, considering we were a large group). The hostess was nice and amicable, she kept us informed on our wait time and seated us promptly! The vibe was definitely lively! Love the western decor (the deer head was a nice touch). The food on the other hand was absolutely the highlight of our dining experience. I ordered the 20 oz. bone in ribeye steak 10/10- medium. The steak was cooked to perfection (nicely charred on the outside, evenly warm and pink on the inside). Nice marbling of fat as well. My wife ordered the 6 oz. sirloin steak with shrimp skewers 10/10- well done (I know, she likes her meat burnt, sadly). For sides, we ordered the loaded mash, mac n cheese, and caesar salad. The loaded mash was rich, comforting, creamy, and savory 10/10! Overall, we had an exceptional time. We will definitely be back sooner than later. The servers are so hospitable, but as they are serving a lot of tables, I would try to be as accommodating as possible. Shoutout to our server Gali, who is kind and warm and the best! The food is always great. The pork rib appetizer is pretty good, comes with four bones on a bed of fries if a party wants to share just a bit each. We've enjoyed the fried pickles before but it can be a little on the salty side. Similarly, depending on the day the rice/chili/steak can be a little heavily salted, so if you are sensitive to sodium I would make that clear to your server. I always get a sirloin (can't beat the price) with a cup of chili and a baked potato. The sirloin here is very good for what it is, and rarely ever overdone, nice and juicy. The chili has no beans but is nicely savory with lots of beef flavor. They have A1 if you want and ask. Always get extra rolls. They will even give you some to take home. Delicious with their whipped cinnamon butter.

Rude staff and a very disappointing experience…read more My friend ordered a Lotus frappe, and unfortunately, it was not good at all. It tasted more like crushed cookies than an actual frappe, and she was literally chewing on pieces of ice. Since we've ordered the Lotus frappe here before and it was perfectly fine, we figured this was simply an issue with how the drink was made this time. I politely asked if the drink could be remade as a caramel frappe instead, since we knew that one was good. Instead, we were told, "We can't do that, you would have to pay." I'm sorry, but why would we pay again for a drink that was made poorly the first time? We weren't asking for a free drink just because we changed our minds. We were asking for the original drink to be corrected because it was genuinely not drinkable. What really made the situation worse was being told, "We're not a chain like Starbucks to just remake drinks... this will go to waste." Respectfully, if the concern is that the drink will "go to waste," perhaps the better solution would be to make sure the drink is prepared correctly in the first place. I understand that businesses don't want to waste product, but making a customer pay for another drink after receiving one that was poorly made doesn't exactly feel like great customer service either. I'm not expecting the "customer is always right" treatment, and I'm certainly not trying to be difficult. But when a customer genuinely cannot enjoy what they were served, the reasonable thing would be to offer a solution rather than essentially tell them, "Sorry, pay again." We've had good experiences here before, which is why this was especially disappointing. Hopefully this was just an off day, because the way this was handled left a much worse taste than the frappe did.
