Wish the frame costs were a bit more affordable, especially now that I'm at the age where I'll start needing reading and distance in the same pair of glasses & the lenses ALONE are SEVERAL HUNDRED DOLLARS! But I've been coming here for close to 2 decades now & they continue to accept EyeMed insurance and have consistently had good docs doing eye exams. The front desk gals are always nice as well. Doctor Chu was great. The eye exams were easy and fast. The service afterwards for the frames was terrible. I asked for help picking out frames since this was my first time getting glasses. The consultant told me to pick out a pair. I told her that is why I ask for help, I don't know what frames look good with my features. She picked out the exact same pair as she was wearing. That was a lazy effort. Then, with my insurance the frames were OVERLY PRICED at several hundred dollars. Due to the poor customer service, I will never be back and informing my friends as well. So on Dec.12,2024 @ 3:30 the woman with the red hair and in an Elf dress went out of her way to be an absolute jerk. My son who is Autistic and had just fallen and we went to get his glasses fixed. The red head in the Elf dress was so RUDE told my son his glasses had no warranty and that his frame would be $500 by themselves but they could fix his lenses which were scratched up horribly. Again he tried to deal with her about his frame because it was scrapped up but she wouldn't even offer him a comparable frame told him he'll just have to deal with it being scratched What a horrible thing to say to a 13 yr old Autistic boy. read more

My 18 year old and I have been going to Jansen Optical for about 10 years now. Dr. Hamissou is absolutely the best. We see her once a year and she always remembers us and is just a genuinely sweet person. The rest of the staff is super welcoming and fun so we have no choice but to keep on coming back! I've been going to Jansen Optical for years now and I cannot recommend them highly enough. No frills, just friendly, professional and fast eye exams and service. Dr. Hamissou treats you as the top priority and takes the time to go over any issues or options you may have during a yearly exam. The techs and admin staff are professional, polite and patient. I've even overheard another patient frustrated with a wrong prescription before, and yet the staff was very respectful and hurried to help correct what she needed. Pretty sure my first interaction with the spam machine aka Jansen Optical, was somewhere around 2016-2017. They did a lousy job on my glasses (see previous review). Despite numerous calls and email attempts to get off their mailing list they insist on spam. Move out of state? Spam. Hit the unsubscribe? Spam. Call them and request to get taken off their list? Spam. What happens is they keep switching email marketing apps. First app that gets a spam report removes your email off the list. They get enough spam reports that they get kicked off the platform, so they change marketing app, drag the entire list (unsubscribes and spam reports included) over to the new app and start happily spamming again. Forever and a day, expect to get spam from these guys. If you insist on using them for eye exams, at least don't give them your email. read more

The treatment and glasses are fine. They are very passive aggressive and unprofessional, both the doctor and her staff. I had the unfortunate experience of hearing several staff members giggling and gossiping about patients and other employees. Really.. there are plenty of places to go and be treated respectfully both to your face and otherwise. read more

I have gone here two times now and I have had nothing but great things to say and would highly recommend. It is fairly easy to get an appointment within a reasonable time frame. You have an option to pay for a scan of your eye (unfortunately insurance doesn't cover) and it will allow for you to not get your eye dilated. I typically will just pay the additional cost and if you have an FSA card you can use that. I got sunglasses this year that were polarized and the staff worked with me to find the right frames for my face and the color of the lens. Of course, they also took measurements of my face to ensure the frames will fit my face properly which is very helpful. There is nothing like a pair of sunglasses that are too tight across the face and cause headaches. read more

I had a very negative experience here. I have a particularly difficult contact lense prescription that Dr. Chau tried several times to get right, which entailed about three follow up visits several weeks apart. She eventually had to consult with Dr. Jansen who had more experience and was better able to help me. That was last year, when I went in this year for my annual exam/new glasses/contacts I was told Dr. Jansen had retired but had ordered one more pair of lenses for me that I would still be charged a fitting fee for if I elected to get them. I opted not to get the optimapping done when I went for my visit but Dr. Chau asked me to do it anyway (although I was not charged) which frankly seemed to be because of her relative lack of experience as a practicing optometrist. On top of that, they only stock Brand name frames and have one shelf of generic lenses which are covered by insurance (the lenses aren't covered mind you, just the frames). This business is in my mind a picture perfect example of what's wrong with the health care industry in America, I felt like the women in the office were far more concerned with upselling me on expensive pieces of plastic than they were about treating me as a patient and human being. I eventually just bought glasses online that cost a whopping $60 that included UV protection, scratch resistance, and anti-glare coating, which would have been upwards of $100 at Jansen Optical. Do yourself a favor and find an optometrist's office that cares about patients, not the bottom line. read more

This place used to be good, but alas has gone downhill. Why is it so hard to find good customer service? The girls here all had an attitude. Perhaps because it's a Friday and I came a few hours before closing? here is my story: i went to your office to pick up my glasses after i got off of work, which was at 2:45pm on friday, february 21, 2020. when i arrived, i told the receptionist i had recieved a phone call the previous day, notifying me that my glasses were ready to pick up. she told me to wait a little bit, which i did, and after about two minutes the same redheaded lady guided me to a table, and told me to take a seat. i sat down and she asked me to try on the glasses. i did, and then she asked me to look at her, but i noticed that she asked me in a way, which was not pleasant or courteous. she wasn't friendly at all. i gave her the glasses and she took what looked like a pen and started marking the lenses. then she started to wipe the lenses. this whole time she did not make any attempt at conversation, so i attempted to be friendly and ask about the pen she had, and what were the markings she put on the lenses. apparently this offended her, because she abruptly said, "that was not a pen." that was all she said. i then told her that i realized it must be to remove the smudges. she seemed like she was in a bad mood, or just ready for the weekend. she told me to try on the glasses again. but then, without saying anything, she just leaves and i'm sitting there, when another optician shows up and asks me to read a piece of paper and evaluate the glasses. at this point, i'm feeling a little unloved. the new optician isn't inspiring my confidence at this point. at any rate, i'm trying to read, but i notice that everything i'm reading from my left eye is blurry. there was something wrong with the prescription. the optician, took the glasses and held them high in the air and made some markings. she said, "well, they're both symmetrical." as if somehow i was mistaken, and i don't know what i'm talking about. this is not my first pair of progressives. as a matter of fact, if you'll check my history, my last two pair of glasses were progressives that i had received from your location. those were fine. so i know a little something about what i say. she then told me to wait, and after about five minutes came back and told me to try the glasses on again. i tried the glasses on but i still didn't see any improvement. i then inspected the glasses and noticed that the frame seemed a little bent. i asked her if she had bent the frame. she told me, she did, but only to see if the lenses needed adjusting and some other explanation that seemed to be an attempt to obfuscate the fact that she bent the frames. i handed her back the glasses and told her i didn't want them. i then requested a refund. she told me i could not get one until she spoke with the manager. update: Jansen Optical contacted me to apologize and resolve the issue. I've been going to Jansen optical since I was a child.. at least 13 years now, and have never been upset with my experiences there until recently. Dr. Hamissou and Dr. Jansen are both wonderful optometrists. They are both very thorough and take their time to explain everything to you. However, I'm giving 4 stars because the front desk workers have recently been extremely rude. There's a new woman working there named I think Christina(?) who I unfortunately have had to communicate with multiple times at my last appointment as well as on the phone. She is condescending, rude, makes you feel stupid, etc. As a staff member, it's *your* job to know how things work, not the patient. And being rude in response to basic questions is not acceptable. The patient is the customer. If you don't enjoy communicating with patients then please get another job. *Dr. Jansen, please hold your front desk staff to higher standards again if you want to keep your patients!* read more

It was easy to get an appointment in a couple days. My examination with Dr. Sally was through. She answered all my questions with a positive attitude. I've been a patient here for 10 years and they are the only people to ever provide my glasses. It's clearly not the same place since Dr Jansen retired or sold it (the name seems to be the only thing that hasn't changed) New docs are great, new front desk is great. The optical department has new people and they're truly awful. Chassidy was rude and unprofessional. My lenses are a custom shape because I have a wide face. They need to be sized up so as to not look ridiculous. Chassidy said "we don't do that anymore" so I tried to explain that, historically, one particularly line was the only one that fit and the lens change was necessary. She said that wasn't an option. When I asked for other options, she said "look around." I asked for guidance for large frames or some advice on how to approach the issue. She told me "things have changed a lot around here -- we won't do that anymore." So I got flustered and just left. I came back to ask for the order they placed for my lenses and frames from last year because I'm going to try to get someone else to do it (every optometrist in the country uses a handful of labs and there's only 2 or 3 manufactures of the frames, regardless of brand -- something the retail storefronts really don't like to advertise). When I tried to get the info, she left helping another customer to come up to the front desk to try to prevent me from getting the info to get my glasses elsewhere. I don't know what her problem is, but she just cost this place my entire family's business and we've been going there for a decade. Maybe if the ownership changes again, they'll be ok again. If Chassidy is any indication of where it's headed, however, this place is not going to be around much longer. read more

My children & I have been customers for over 9yrs and I've always had positive experiences. Except for today. I was quoted 3 times by 3 different people that polycarbonate lenses cost $25. Today while placing my order, I was told my insurance didn't cover polycarbonate lenses and I would have to pay out of pocket $25 for them. I called my insurance and they explained to me, and then to a staff member, that I have an insurance allowance that is enough to cover $21 of the lenses with polycarbonate and I would only have to pay the $4 remainder overage out of pocket. After the phone call with my insurance co, Dr. Jansen explained that the $25 quote was a gift she gives to customers, but since i'm using my entire insurance allowance, that discount is no longer valid(WHAT?) My new quote is now without the 50% polycarbonate gift for customers which she states she normally charges $50, using all my allowance, and I still have to pay $25 put of pocket for the polycarbonate. She assured me she was giving me all the discounts available and I felt like a complete idiot having the Dr and her assistant repeating how mistaken I was in front of other customers. The quote receipt only shows my Insurance allowance discount at maximum + a $4 discount(what wpuld have been my previous out of pocket charge) which leaves a $25 charge for polycarbonate lenses‍ Bottom line: know you're coverages. Great place to get your eyeballs tuned up! Making an appointment with the staff was pretty simple. They did have a spelling mistake on my insurance information which may or may not have been my fault, but that was the only hiccup. I was running five minutes late to my appointment and they still squeezed me in in a timely manner. I changed contact brands for the first time in 10 years and I like that they are receptive to feedback to help me find the right pair. So far, so good, and I was really impressed with my Opthamologist who had a similar prescription as mine and offered me some really great lasik advice. I never felt rushed and he answered my 3,000 questions with solid, confident answers. They offered me a free trial pair, solution and a case. Minus one star because they offer a newfangled fancy retina-scan type thing which is NOT covered by most insurance companies and I declined. I felt awkward because they were selling it to the hilt and I didn't want to indulge. $35 extra when my insurance is through the roof is a lot of money. They sort of slip the "permission slip" in with your new client info and if you don't pay attention you'll sign it. I didn't, and the girl at the desk made me feel like a bad eye-ball owner for not participating - but contacts and glasses are expensive enough, I don't want to be pressured for more than I need, especially given that my eyes have been the same for 12+ years now. read more

I take my children here for their yearly exams and eye-glass fittings. The front desk staff has always been very competent and friendly with me and my children. I especially appreciated Stephanie's patience as it can take my daughters a very long time to pick out frames. Stephanie is no longer with Dr. Jansen's office, but I was pleased that Tracie is the office manager now as she has always been very competent, friendly, and efficient. The other staff members were kind, even when I snapped at them for mispronouncing my daughter's name (sorry, I missed breakfast and blame low-blood sugar). Dr. Jansen can at times seem a bit rushed or distracted but she has never been rude or dismissive of my children. She seems genuinely interested in them and I feel that her exams are sufficient. We recently saw her partner, Dr. Prevost, for the first time and she did a great job, too. I was concerned about my daughter's eye muscle development and Dr. Prevost did a thorough examination and really took time to answer my questions and validate my concerns. The selection of frames isn't as varied as I would like. They tend to go heavy on the black, square frames, but I did notice a few colored frames and clear frames in their collection now. I go to Eclectic Eyewear for my exams and frames as I like their selection a bit better, but I would highly recommend Dr. Cheryl Jansen and her staff for folks in the South Austin area and for children. read more

The optometrist is okay but their prices are much higher. I don't like them pushing hard to buy the glasses and contacts in their store because you can get them for a much lower price at a warehouse. I've been using Yelp for a few years, but haven't felt compelled to write a review until now. I'm a UT grad student who doesn't often venture far from the campus area for anything. Lately, however, I've been spending a lot of time at my girlfriend's place down south. While running an errand, I passed by a small strip-mall office generically marked "Optometry" and thought I would inquire since I'm nearing the end of my current box of contacts. I've been going to Bella Vision for the past couple of years, but after getting a poor prescription from them the last go-round, I've been a free agent. Dr. Jansen is my new vision provider. I could not have been more pleased. I arrived for my appointment and immediately did the battery of desktop machine eye exams with an extraordinarily nice assistant who really seemed to enjoy working there. After I completed those, I did have to wait for ~10 minutes completely blind (I removed my contacts) for the doctor who was with the patient in front of me. I was told that she was dealing with an eye infection and would be right with me. No problem; I appreciate a doctor who doesn't rush out a patient who needs care. Dr. Jansen was fantastic. She managed to get to know me a bit all while performing the eye exam. She corrected my prescription and also noticed a couple things with my eyes that could be important down the road that no one has pointed out before. I felt like I as at a real doctor's office instead of just a lens distributor. Can't really speak to the selection of frames, but it seemed above average for this kind of office. I hate wearing eye-glasses. I hate it so much that even though I had my first prescriptive pair 10 years ago, I quit wearing them 9 years ago and haven't had a pair since. BUT since I have this really excellent insurance right now, I decided I needed to utilize my contribution and get some glasses. So, I called Jansen Optical as they're south, and they're open on Saturday. They didn't have a Saturday appointment free for 3 weeks. Okay, I'll take a Thursday at 11:30. I arrived at 11:15, paperwork in hand, and sat. And sat. Finally called into the room for my vision screening exam. Then I went back to the waiting area as Dr. Jansen was with another patient. Once she called me back there it was all fine--she's friendly, the staff are friendly, and they have a great selection. Why only 3 stars? Two reasons--the length of time I waited the day of my exam, and because someone on the staff called me the Monday after my appointment to verify some information and order my lenses. That's 2 days AFTER my original appointment--shouldn't the glasses have been ordered on Friday??? read more

Dr Jansen and her staff are top notch. They have always been friendly and helpful. I've been going here for probably the past 4 years now and prior to that I was bouncing around from one eye doc to another for various reasons. The office is always clean and neat as are the staff in their appearance. This office is packed with high-end technology for eye care too. They have a machine called the "Optomap" ( I think...lol) that takes a digital picture of your retina! It does cost a bit extra, but the convenience of not having them dilate your eyes and having to wear those silly paper sunglasses is worth it to me. Plus, it's stored for future reference if the good Dr would ever have reason to compare old with new. I can't speak much on the selection of glasses as I've only purchased contacts here (stupid VSP). They do have a good selection of trial contacts in store though. Prior to visiting this office, it was common place for me to have to wait several days for the trial pair to arrive at the office (my bad astigmatism limits my lens selection). So there you have it! I am especially annoyed at having to fill out paperwork every visit when I go once a year. I always feels like Dr. Hamissou takes the time to provide you with the best care possible; listening to your questions, and providing knowledgable answers. She really knows her stuff. I'm a curious person and I probably ask more questions about how the eye works than most folks, but Dr. Hamissou is always great at helping me learn. She even sat down with me and we went through pictures of my retina, me asking questions about the optical nerve, where the light focus, etc. I couldn't be happier with their service and I would highly recommend having them as your eye care providers. read more

I have been using this same office for my eye care since 2001. Over the years I have had exceptional service. Recently we have begun seeing Dr. Hemissou and she has been excellent in navigating the process of switching to contacts from eye glasses for our 14 year old son. The whole staff was patient and caring. I alive in Bastrop and it takes me 45 minutes to get to this office and o pass plenty of other eye clinics on my way. I would give this place 0 stars if I could. I love Dr. Hamissou and I am sad that I will need to find a new doctor since this office is a complete disaster. When I ordered my glasses and contacts I gave them my new address. My contacts did not show up so I called and found out that they were sent to my old address and they asked if I knew anyone there to go get them from. Uh no I live an hour away from that address now. Then when my glasses didn't show up I had to call. I think they never placed the order because I was told they will put and rush on it and I should get them in a week. They showed up in the wrong size. I called again and was told they would order me another pair. I showed them my current size was 54 and the new glasses were 45. Hoping they wouldn't make the same mistake again. Now the second pair they sent is a 50, still too small. I give up and won't give them another penny. read more
