    I had an older car, a 2000 Volvo S70 that needed some major engine repairs. We have dealt with Japan Auto in the past with other vehicles we have owned and contacted Josh since Kenzo has retired. They advised they could look at the car and would provide us an estimate on the work needed. We had to have the car towed, because it was inoperable, nice thing about Japan Auto is they do have their own storage lot for this very such case. They took no time in getting the car evaluated and was very detailed about what the problem was and what it was going to take to fix it and why certain things had to be replaced because of how the engine is made. They provided us with an estimate and answered all of our questions to our satisfaction. We gave them the green light and in about 2 days they had all the work done, thank goodness we had a customer appreciation coupon for 15% off. The car is now running great and I would definitely recommend Josh and the team over at Japan Auto, a very professional and honest business!

    Customized anti-rat/animal ingress grill.

    There are by the book mechanics, who learn their trade from trainings or manuals, and are competent. Then, at the highest level, there's a master mechanic like Dario from Japan Auto who has the ability to find a working solution to a recurring car problem which cannot be found in the trainings or the manuals. See, what caused our car problem is one or two members of the multitude of field rats we have in our otherwise fine hillside wooded neighborhood ventured into our Honda Accord, where we usually had kept an energy bar or such in reserve for road trip emergencies. ANd so at least one very large rat got into our Honda and did plenty of chewing damage this winter to get the interior of the car to those that energy bars. And they also leaved natural droppings by which it was easy to tell it was a very big rat doing a lot of damage. ANd by the time we I noticed a hole in the front center console area, rats (or large rat singular) had also chewed their way through our trunk lining to access some other temporarily stored food in the trunk. So I asked an old independent mechanic friend of mine who doesn't work on Japanese model cars who to go to, and he recommended Japan Auto, which I did, and met Dario the mechanic there for an inspection of the rat-damaged parts. However,between the time Dario inspected the damage, ordered the replacement parts, and the parts came in, the rats apparently returned and did more damage to the vent system wires, even though there was no more food in the car. And then our ventilation/air conditioning system stopped functioning completely.. So upon further inspection of the new damage, Dario got creative and figured out where the rats were ingressing the car. It was through a section of the engine compartment that leads to the back of our glove compartment, which also gave them access to the vent system wires. So he ordered parts for a truly industrial-quality metal blocking grill to fit that roughly 8 inch by 4 inch easy-rat access hole to the interior area. And a week later he installed the grill, and made it fit right , so it looks just like an standard OEM part. And then he also expertely soldered and custom-reworked the damaged wires with new shrink wrap, so that we didn't have replace the entire vent system wiring harness module, which would have been much higher cost. Five weeks later, the rats appear gone for good, thanks to to custom grill blocking rat ingress. There's no way a basic mechanic was going to diagnose and solve an unusual problem like this so effectively, painlessly. Painlessly, because the cost was quite reasonable, and, surprise, there were zero extra non-estimated in advance charges, even though I expect his work in sourcing the custom grill materials, and the shrink wrap for wires took some extra time for him.. But Dario did all that. Also, Kudos also to David the office manager for making the paperwork and appointment arrangements easy. So you bet I'm coming back to Japan Auto Center for my next maintenance or repair requirements.

Once my car was transferred to the auto body shop, it became a completely separate system, team, and process--and the two sides clearly do not communicate. This disconnect caused confusion around payments, delays, and unnecessary out-of-pocket costs on my end, including having to pay $700 for a rental car that I originally was told I wouldn't need for that long. I was told my car would be dropped off in Novato once I made a payment. I paid the auto body shop, but the repair shop had a separate payment link that I couldn't access from my phone. I showed them the issue in real time, but instead of helping or offering another way to pay, they dismissed it and said it "worked fine" for them. Because of miscommunication between their teams, my car was not actually in Novato as promised, and I had to wait around for them to figure it out, which caused even more delays and inconvenience. On top of that, the person I was dealing with refused to call and help coordinate getting my car released or delivered until I paid through their system, even though their payment link was not working properly for me, which delayed me further and resulted in additional out-of-pocket costs due to their poor communication. No one took ownership of the situation, and the staff was rude and dismissive throughout the process. While the repair work itself may have been completed, the experience across both businesses was disorganized, unprofessional, and lacked basic customer service. I would not recommend.

    BEWARE! BAIT AND SWITCH! We took our vehicle there just for…read morethe smog check and before they conducted any work we told them that we have replaced the battery, if they can check in advance to make sure system is ready for smog check or not. So, they won't fail it for no reason. Yes, they did basic OBD check and assured us that it is ready for a smog check so it won't fail for that reason. We agreed to do the smog check then after 5-10 minutes they failed the vehicle and rude woman that works there told me that it is not her fault, so their OBD machine couldn't read that there is still pending code for the battery. Despite letting her to know about my suspicion in advance she still lied and failed our vehicle also charged us full smog inspection fee and assured us that we just need to drive it for few days then bring it back for free smog test. Since they won't charge if we bring it back within 30 days. We drove it less than 15 days and brought it back, car passed the smog check but they insisted that we have to repay again, since it is a separate than initial inspection. They are rude and liars. Please be careful and do not waste your time and money with those dishonest people. I'm going to file a claim with BAR! We can't let them to screw our community!

I have only met Scott a couple of times - instantly likeable, instantly interested in the car, issue, situation, etc. and clearly knowledgeable...but I can't tell you much beyond that. The reason I haven't dealt much with Scott has nothing to do with Scott. But, when I take my car to MM - I deal directly with their head mechanic Mark. This is because ~20+ years ago (hmm...maybe even more), I asked for a referral from gryphon moterwerke (g-werke dot com) in Berkeley for the 'best mechanic they knew of in the bay area' who might be able to get the work I needed done (minus the HEFTY price tag that tends to come with most Gryphon estimates) - Without hesitation, or even a moments consideration - almost with the affect of someone rattling off any known, irrefutable fact ... eg: 'cars have engines'. They told me 'Mark at Marin Motorsports'. At the time, I lived in Berkeley so that seemed a bit far - so I asked them if they had any suggestions closer, the answer was a hard 'No.' Awkward silence (well awkward for me anyway), - 'the only person I know of who will do the same quality work that we do here is Mark in Marin.' I was more than a little stunned by the answer - expecting at least a couple of follow up places - perhaps with caveats like 'Try XYZMotors, I hear they are good - but I dont know how trustworthy they are' OR SOMETHING. So, now I was sufficiently intrigued and I gave Mark a call and sure enough, he knew every nuance of every description I gave him of each item (salt & pepped with questions here and there). Then he told me what he thought the issue was, but obv he would need to take a look first, etc. I finally got my car out to Marin and he popped the hood, pushed here, adjusted there and gave the exact diagnosis that he had given over the phone. It was pretty impressive. Then, top it off by the fact that the cost of all of the work was almost exactly 35% of what Gryphon was going to charge to do the same. . . well ... I was sold. I have never taken another car anywhere else and never will. This is the only place to EVEN CONSIDER taking your VW or Audi (I say VW/Audi because these are the only two types of cars I have PERSONALLY ever taken there - but pretty damn sure any German car would be identically treated). Currently, I have an Audi S5 and he not only is everything I described above ... right before I leave the shop, I always ask the same question: 'given that i drive in 'XYZ' manner, what should I keep my eye on as a potential next repair / issue. He always lets me know what he thinks the next couple of issues will be and when(ish) I might start to see an issue. Never, one time, has he been wrong. Reading this review back to myself, I get that it sounds like an infomercial for Marin Motorsports - believe me it is not. You will NEVER find a more capable, honest, friendly shop - AND THEN to top it all off with a little cherry on top - it also ends up being the most affordable option!!! (every once in a while - mostly for fun at this point), I have had work done by MM and afterwards called one or two 'highly rated' shops in the area to find out what they would charge me for the list of items on my receipt. I have NEVER found a lower estimate (but did get one or two within $50 ... which in auto repair I more or less consider a 'tie').
