I used to have to drive across the bay to come here, but have since moved to the area - so: pretty sweet perk for me. I have only met Scott a couple of times - instantly likeable, instantly interested in the car, issue, situation, etc. and clearly knowledgeable...but I can't tell you much beyond that. The reason I haven't dealt much with Scott has nothing to do with Scott. But, when I take my car to MM - I deal directly with their head mechanic Mark. This is because ~20+ years ago (hmm...maybe even more), I asked for a referral from gryphon moterwerke (g-werke dot com) in Berkeley for the 'best mechanic they knew of in the bay area' who might be able to get the work I needed done (minus the HEFTY price tag that tends to come with most Gryphon estimates) - Without hesitation, or even a moments consideration - almost with the affect of someone rattling off any known, irrefutable fact ... eg: 'cars have engines'. They told me 'Mark at Marin Motorsports'. At the time, I lived in Berkeley so that seemed a bit far - so I asked them if they had any suggestions closer, the answer was a hard 'No.' Awkward silence (well awkward for me anyway), - 'the only person I know of who will do the same quality work that we do here is Mark in Marin.' I was more than a little stunned by the answer - expecting at least a couple of follow up places - perhaps with caveats like 'Try XYZMotors, I hear they are good - but I dont know how trustworthy they are' OR SOMETHING. So, now I was sufficiently intrigued and I gave Mark a call and sure enough, he knew every nuance of every description I gave him of each item (salt & pepped with questions here and there). Then he told me what he thought the issue was, but obv he would need to take a look first, etc. I finally got my car out to Marin and he popped the hood, pushed here, adjusted there and gave the exact diagnosis that he had given over the phone. It was pretty impressive. Then, top it off by the fact that the cost of all of the work was almost exactly 35% of what Gryphon was going to charge to do the same. . . well ... I was sold. I have never taken another car anywhere else and never will. This is the only place to EVEN CONSIDER taking your VW or Audi (I say VW/Audi because these are the only two types of cars I have PERSONALLY ever taken there - but pretty damn sure any German car would be identically treated). Currently, I have an Audi S5 and he not only is everything I described above ... right before I leave the shop, I always ask the same question: 'given that i drive in 'XYZ' manner, what should I keep my eye on as a potential next repair / issue. He always lets me know what he thinks the next couple of issues will be and when(ish) I might start to see an issue. Never, one time, has he been wrong. Reading this review back to myself, I get that it sounds like an infomercial for Marin Motorsports - believe me it is not. You will NEVER find a more capable, honest, friendly shop - AND THEN to top it all off with a little cherry on top - it also ends up being the most affordable option!!! (every once in a while - mostly for fun at this point), I have had work done by MM and afterwards called one or two 'highly rated' shops in the area to find out what they would charge me for the list of items on my receipt. I have NEVER found a lower estimate (but did get one or two within $50 ... which in auto repair I more or less consider a 'tie'). read more

I've been going to Marin Motorsports for years. I have an older Audi A3. They've always done great work and have been honest and have always balanced what could be done versus what should be done. I first went to them after being told I had to replace a $1000 part by another company. I took the car to Mark and Scott who told me I could go another 20,000 on it before it would need replacing. They could have milked it but they didn't. It's almost impossible to tell if your mechanic is always being honest but I feel like these guys are smart, honest, do great work and have been a pleasure to work with. I brought my BMW in this morning thinking that I was due for an oil change because the service light came on. I also needed to get it smoged. Mark was very helpful. Told me that in fact I didn't need to have the oil changed at this time. The reason the service light came on was because I needed brake fluid. Brought the car in at 9:15 this morning and had it back by 11:30. Since oil changes are expensive for these cars, Mark could have made more money by changing the oil. Instead he said I could go another 6 months since I don't drive it that often. Will definitely be going back to see him for all future car needs. I appreciate his honesty. Spoke with Mark who was very professional and gave me several options complimentary since i was a newbie. My issue turned out to be minor after Mark took a close look at my Audi's fault codes and should the issue return I now have a plan and estimate of repair costs, which seemed very reasonable. Sometimes you just need to make a change to realize just how bad things were before you made the change. Before coming to Marin Motorsports, I had been very happy with the level of service I had been receiving at the local Volkswagen dealership, though over the years the bloom was beginning to fade on that rose. However, now that I have had the opportunity to work with an honest mechanic who treats his customers as humans not as cash cows, I realize how bad things were at Sonnen. In my review of Sonnen, I outlined several of the issues which lead me to consider moving on to a new mechanic. A Yelp search lead me to Marin Motorsports and now I'm sorry I didn't make the change sooner. I brought my car in to Marin Motorsports for its 100,000 mile service, knowing that the last time my car had been serviced that it was reported that I had a broken air cleaner housing, a fault with my emission control system and needed brakes. I didn't mention any of these items to Scott, figuring this would be a good test of his knowledge and skills. Scott called me to inform me about the broken air cleaner housing which he said he would repair since it would be cheaper to repair than to replace. He also informed me that I had a hose missing from my emission control system. During that conversation, he informed me that my brakes still had about 65% of their useful life left. (A bit of a surprise to me considering the dealership had informed me 5000 miles prior that I needed brakes.) Scott also informed me that Volkswagen recommended I replace the timing chain and water pump at 105,000 miles and since I was almost there, he suggested that he perform those jobs while the car as there. With the timing chain, water pump, repairs to the air cleaner housing, replaced hoses, and scheduled service, the total came to right around $1,000 which was $600 less than what the dealership had quoted me just for the brakes and a new air cleaner housing. The car looked and ran perfectly after his ministrations. Most recently, I had to go in to have a headlight replaced. Imagine my surprise when he was able to replace the bulb in less than five minutes - a task which the dealership said took at least an hour and cost me $90... If you have a water-cooled VW, Marin Motorsports is the place in Marin to have it serviced. read more

I found Scott through Yelp. I've had my car repaired twice at Marin Motorsport, each time the 2002 BMW 325i was repaired on time, correctly and at a very fair price. Scott keeps me informed about my needs (and these cars have many) as well as options that can save either money or a trip back. When he recommended repairs he suggests when to get them done to save money. Example I have a leaking oil pan he suggested we do it when the next oil change comes around to save additional costs of replacing synthetic oil unnecessarily. My car is in now in for a much needed repair and he called to let me know that I'll need spark plugs in 12,000 miles, the job he is doing now has them exposed so it's its just the cost of plugs now as opposed to the labor to reach them later. No brainer In each of my now 3 dealings with Marin Motorsport and Scott, I've felt I'm dealing with an honest and professional business. They get my highest recommendation. read more

Although I am a Florida resident, I stay in Tiburon in the summers. As a first time customer, I called Mark and explained a problem with our 2012 BMW 128i. After he explained the history of BMW's ignition coils causing skips or stutter in the enigne, I felt very comfortable about his knowledge of BMWs. Moreover, he made time for me the next morning to diagnose the problem. Within an hour he informed me that he was very confident that coil #4 caused the problem. He also explained that others spend time swapping coils and rerunning the diagnosis, but, it causes unnecessary labor charges. He recommended to change only that one coil since the car has low mileage. He ordered the part for about $85 and installed it within an hour. The total bill was around $200 and the engine runs great. I drove the car up a steep hill and floored the gas and the engine purred like a happy cat. I will definitely use Marin Motorsports for my future repairs and services. I highly recommend them to anyone who demands honest and trustworthy people to receive straight answers and repairs at a reasonable cost. read more

I've known Mark since the 1970's, and knew he went off to race cars, and then opened Marin Motorsports in the 1990's. My 2000 VW Passat started puking out coolant. I had just moved from Petaluma to here and my trusted mechanic DID NOT move with me. I had to find a new one I can trust. I called Marin Motorsports, Scott was upfront and honest from that very first call, telling me he cant get to it util Tuesday of next week and that he can refer me to a guy that he trusts around the corner. That sold me. Took my car to him Tuesday. Did I mention my car is a 2000 VW Passat? Every trip to to the shop is AT LEAST $1000!!! Scott calls me tells me its gonna be $200 and some change, I figure that's for the parts and labor will be around 6 or 7 hundred more. I get there, Scott hands me the bill and BAMMO, it's 200 and some change like he said!!!!! No inflated labor costs, no additional unneccessary parts, no comments about needing to replace the entire engine to fix the leak. Scott has a new loyal customer with me. I second and third the motion: Scott is a straight-up guy, provides excellent service and his prices cannot be beat. He also gives straight answers to women (my wife, in this case) which is still a rare commodity in the indy repair world. In my specific case, Scott replaced the pads and rotors on my MINI. The quote from the local MINI specialists was well north of $1,000. Scott was able to provide superior parts (including very high-performance, low-dust pads) and perform the work for under $700. He had the job done, including the break-in drive, in under 4 hours. My "low tire pressure" warning went on the day after the brake job - because he rotated the tires and the different circumferences threw off the alert. When I called Scott patiently talked me through the procedure to reset the system, and that was that. He provided excellent service before, during and after - all at the most reasonable prices around. He is now our mechanic for both vehicles! read more
