The reviews are real. I moved to Corte Madera last month and bought a beat up old truck for short money. I knew from the get-go that it was junk, but wanted to be sure it was safe enough to get me to and from the grocery store (and occasionally further when I'm feeling lucky). I wrote up a laundry list of things I knew were wrong, dropped the truck off, and got a call a few hours later from Trisha. I hadn't yet spoke with Trisha, so she didn't know how I felt about the truck. When she called, she approached the conversation with care and eased into the tough news, reinforcing what I already knew while also adding a few other bullets to my list of problems. Her advice? Don't spend a dime. The team at D&K is honest and not in the business of ripping people off. Read their worst reviews on here and you'll see some whiners who wrongly wasted the staff's time. Time is money and you're going to get charged for it. It's only fair. Read their best reviews and you'll see what's real. #1 on Yelp and #1 on NextDoor, and deservedly so. As a transplant from MA, I don't know many people around here. I'm pretty handy and know how to handle basic fixes on my cars, but I still get nervous when finding a new mechanic. It's been long enough since my last review that I want to update it. I do a lot of work on my cars but sometimes it's nice to let the professionals at D and K fix the problem. I have a 2000 Yukon XL with a lot of miles. I came to a point a couple of years ago that I was sure it needed new brake pads/rotors. Dave put the truck on the rack, inspected the brakes and said they're not ready to change. About 6 or so months and many miles later, I brought the truck back and again Dave said I didn't need new brakes. About 6 months after that, I brought the truck back sure beyond a doubt I needed brakes. I told Dave just change them even if they're close. He called me once again saying not ready. He refused to take money for something I didn't need. I just had the same experience with Trish and tires on a Volvo. I was ready to buy 4 new tires but Trish, like her father, wouldn't sell me something I didn't need. Dave and Trish are people of integrity and just nice, decent people to deal with. This review is long overdue. My family has been in Marin for 25+ years and after being introduced to D and K we've have been bringing our cars here for the last 10 years. Trisha and the guys are super honest, do great work, and are always accommodating. I have even called over the years just to get car advice and Trisha has always given me thoughtful answers even when she knew that these situations didn't equate to dollars for their business. This is a family owned business and they are good people. If they don't do the kind of work you need, they will send you to someone else in the area they trust. I really cannot express how thankful I am for this wonderful shop! They have been looking after my sweet old '94 Toyota Camry for a few years now. She was my grandma's car (in wv) and a "church and grocery store" car for her, so she's only got 104k miles to date. Most places in the Bay Area do not bother with older cars like miss Mable (that's her name). Not only is Trish and others at the shop responsive and kind, they are good at what they do!! LADIES! (especially if you are living off a starving income) - here is my sad story with D and K Auto Services My car would not start. i was using the wrong key and didn't know it.They charged me close to $100 for my dumb mistake. Alright, it was my dumb mistake, but they sure stuck me. Nothing like getting kicked when you are already down. I could see the $$$ in Trish's eye's when i went to pay. No break from these people. i had work done by D and k before i used the wrong key. It was good work but nothing to write home about and it was top dollar. By chance, a couple years ago i finally found a sweetheart of a mechanic in San Raphael. i asked him to change my spark plugs and oil and left my car. He phoned and told me to come get my car i didn't need my spark plugs or oil changed. Guidelines do not permit me to type in the name of the mechanic and his shop. I came here because of their Yelp rating, so I figured I'd write my own :) My mini cooper was making a bunch of weird noises. I called and Trisha told she told me it was likely oil and to go somewhere and get oil in it ASAP (she didn't push D & K which I loved). I put oil in my car and took it in to D & K to make sure there was no other damage. They noted some things to keep an eye on, but didn't force anything on me at all. If you live in Marin, take your car to D&K! Both of you will be leave satisfied. Dave Painter is a son of a bitch, and I mean that in the good sense. Not only is he a booming character who grew up in Marin, but he is honest to the core. They are as inexpensive as competent mechanics can be, will never overcharge you and will never diagnose or perform unnecessary repairs. They are not after your money, but -gasp- to fix your car! Whenever I go there to get my beloved auto, the bill is always either what I figured it would be (by now I'm a pretty good estimator) or lower. We were talking the other day as Dave dropped me off in the morning to take my car back to work on (he does that for me but I don't know if that's a service he offers), and he said the way you really survive in this business is through your reputation and repeat customers, that you're not gonna get that if you consistently rip people off. And I said "Yeah but Dave, you'd be surprised." (There are so many piece of shit mechancs that somehow keep on going!) I moved to Marin County almost 12 years ago. I first lived in Corte Madera and when I asked my neighbor for a recommendation to an auto service shop, he glowingly recommended D&K Auto. I have been going there ever since, even after moving to Sausalito. My initial gut when meeting Dave was not just his initial booming voice and impressive stature, my immediate gut instinct was that he was a straight up, honest guy. As a woman who has had her share of nincompoop mechanics trying to pull one over, D&K was a truly refreshing experience. In all these years, the initial gut has never been proven wrong. Dave and team have always done stellar work, I've never had one problem complaint with them and they have been incredibly gracious in educating me on specific stuff I need to care about so I know why they are doing it. Who does that? Simply put, D&K Auto puts the definition behind excellent customer service. At this point, I don't care what they charge (which happens to be very reasonable by the way), I will continue to bring all my cars to them for as long as they do business. Absolutely the best auto service I've ever experienced. My catalytic converter was stolen off of my Prius and Trisha was able to get me in same day to get an estimate together for my insurance. To my surprise, the car was fixed by the next morning. I wasn't able to pick it up that day but they gladly held it until the following Monday.
