What a wonderful experience I had. I bought a 2007 Dodge Ram Truck with 151,000 miles. It looks ok, but needed lots of work. I turned over the project to Lars and his staff, to put it back into first class shape. Now, I have the truck back, and what a transformation. I can hardly list everything...new wheels, tires, belts, bumpers, headlights, interior repair, alignment, tune up, and so much more that is beyond my technical level. I'm new to this area and first noticed the garage when I'd walk past it and could see how spotless and organized it is. Then I had a question about my car and called, so I called. Lars spent five minutes on the phone with me explaining the issue and how my car was actually running within normal parameters. I wasn't even a customer yet, and he spent time to tell me I didn't need to bring it in. That's service--and honesty, so I knew when I did need service I'd take my car to the Swiss Garage. I took it in today--I called for a reservation and talked to Nancy who scheduled it conveniently. She gave me a quote which was about $20 more than I thought it would be, but that was fine. The car was ready before they promised--and the actual price was $20 less than she quoted me! So she was just being careful, which is smart and courteous. Since the car was new to me, I wanted to make sure it was thoroughly checked. I'd told them to do whatever needed to be done. They could have said I needed a lot of things. But they didn't--they checked everything, made a note that I'd probably need new brakes in about 6 months and when I did I should have my brake fluid flushed, but nothing else now. And--when I got in my car--they'd vacuumed the carpet and washed the windshield! Treating others the way you want to be treated--This kind of service is all too rare today but it's alive and well at the Swiss Garage. I trust them with my car--and you can, too. read more

Okay, so one person mentioned that his bill was 10% higher than his "verbal quote", but that's why it's just that - a verbal quote. Designed to give you a ballpark of what the job would cost, before they actually get under the hood and see what's what. Same thing happened to me, my VW Jetta needed some breather hoses replaced after failing it's smog test, and Matt gave me an estimate of about $400 over the phone. My repair actually turned out to be a good chunk more than that, but the original estimate was based on what "tends" to go wrong, as opposed to what "actually" went wrong. While it always sucks to have to pay more money than expected, when the procedure is explained and outlined, it's completely understandable. Lars, Matt, and the lads do great work, are courteous and quick, and get your car on the road with a minimum fuss for a good chunk less than the stealership does. My Jetta goes there exclusively now, and I wince when I have to take it to Sonnen for anything "official". read more

I have something for you to think about and most of you should agree with my assessment. I now can sit here and wax poetic about Swiss Garage. Last Sunday, my 335i coupe's battery decided to die. I did what any sane human did and brought the car to my local 'dealer'. Mistakes were made...Information was not explained and prices were outrageous. I could not be mollycoddled into believing this was my only option. In the fires of my redemption, I decided to give my local shop Swiss Garage a call. Nancy was great, informative, straight forward and personable. She explained all the stipulations of replacing a BMW battery, not explained to me at the 'dealer'. In a matter of a couple hours, my beamer was good to go. The silver lining in all of this is that we are not living in the dark ages. Quite the contrary, know your local shop and figure out who you can trust. Swiss Garage is one to be trusted. The Swiss Garage has serviced my vehicles (Toyotas, Hondas, and BMWs) for many years. Lars and his staff are competent and trustworthy mechanics, and the pricing is absolutely fair. On one rare occasion when the service was not satisfactory, I notified Lars and he immediately looked into the matter and fixed the problem with no further charge. He was a genuinely apologetic. When was the last time a service shop treated you with that kind of courtesy? So, yes, this an honest and trustworthy establishment. And, you know, if you are ever faced with a relationship dilemma that somehow requires a choice between a reliable partner and a reliable mechanic, choose the mechanic--and a place like the Swiss Garage. Nancy, who does the reception and scheduling work, is a delight. I will stop here. I took my 2006 Mini Cooper with a transmission problem(I understand something about cars). I request for a quote to change the transmission, they checked the car, and said that it wasn't a transmission problem, that the computer needed to be reset. I paid about $400 for the job. The same day I'm driving out of the shop, I could feel the transmission problem again. I went back there, they wanted to charge me another $5k to change the transmission (which I agreed to pay), but they didn't want to deduct the $400 that I already paid. They said that it wasn't transmission problem, they SHOULD have recognize their mistake on detecting the problem as something different, deduct what I paid before and not make me pay for their errors. BAD EXPERIENCE...NEVER GOING BACK I REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION SOMEWHERE ELSE, MORE RELAIBLE WITH THEIR ESTIMATES. read more

So despite my initial hesitation, I called Swiss Garage back about getting my car serviced. They quoted me about 300$ less than the Volvo dealership so I brought it in to get serviced. Interestingly enough I also got a thank you Yelp msg from Lars (the owner of Swiss Garage) about my so-so review. Apologizing for a high quote and explaining what may have gone wrong with that. I really appreciate someone who takes the time to 1) check with people who had a bad experience to see what they can do better and 2) thank people for good reviews (he also sent a thank you email to a friend of mine who left a good review). Lars and his crew are top notch!I've taken the multitude of random vehicles that I have owned to Swiss Garage, and am blown away when I get them back running better than ever. This is the shop, to not only properly diagnose an odd issue, noise, vibration, but be able to find the parts and repair it to factory condition. This garage has very smart, capable people working for it. I was trying to extend the life of my bmw so when San Rafael BMW Service said my oil filter assembly and an oil line needed replacing I dropped $1000 and let them do it. After that repair my bmw started leaking oil and I was irritated. San Rafael BMW service wasn't even sure what the problem was, but said their work didn't cause it. So I let Swiss Garage handle it and it wasn't cheap but the car doesn't leak oil anymore. Lars said he had to heat one part up to get it to fit. Another incident that hasn't proven out yet but I want to mention. Bought a used VW and found the differential was already having metal shavings in the differential fluid. The local VW dealer (and I like my service rep) gave a quote that was huge because a new differential had to be purchased from VW. Swiss garage found the differential from a junked car at a fraction of the cost. So something to think about with repairs. Dealers have to use new parts when they repair something, affecting cost. Getting the part from a junked car can save a lot in some instances. read more

Beware that Swiss Garage charges for basic diagnostics and estimating that most garages do for free. Be sure to ask exactly what you will be charged and what services you will receive. We called Swiss Garage because of a check engine light related to the torque converter. Another garage had read the code (for free) but couldn't do the transmission work. Nancy at Swiss Garage told us they needed to "verify the code". We ended up being charged $70 just to have Swiss Garage read the code for us again. We expected someone to at least look at the problem. When we disputed the charge we were told "that's what it means to verify." read more

I have been taking my MSB to Swiss Garage since I stopped going to the dealership service department some four years ago. The analysis is better, the repair is better, and the environment is customer-centric and quite friendly. I have never found anyone more capable in analyzing difficult and evidence-lite issues with such accuracy and good sense. They quickly diagnosed the issue and then talked to my original dealership service department to inquire about "good faith" repair the dealership could do to make the repair much less painful financially. Long story short, Lars and Nancy worked with my dealership in Walnut Creek to send my vehicle OVER THERE. They could have done the repair at Swiss Garage and charged me, but instead looked out for me as a customer and negotiated with Chrysler to do the repair for much less since it was fresh out of warranty. Yah... nice folks... very nice service manager. A bit optimistic on pricing. Seems like the bill is a hefty 10-15% over the "verbal quote". Anyway, good competent mechanics. Very responsive to issues. I had new brakes put on there (~ $900) and replacement of a failed oil cooler on my A4 (~ $750). But I finally stopped going here because after spending a good $1500 over the year, the owner said it would cost me a fee of $65-70 for him to read out the code of my Check Engine Light. Yah... everyone's got to eat I know... But I bought a simple pocket scanner for around $40 from Amazon and turned off the CEL myself. Hasn't come on since. Haven't been back to this place since either. Anyone know a good local shop for audi/vw repairs? read more

Swiss Garage is a thoroughly honest and competent automobile repair service. We have used this service center for some years now, and I have never been disappointed. Occasionally, they make mistakes (I mean, they are human, after all). If you call it to their attention, every effort is made to fix the problem. The staff is always polite and attentive. You feel completely at ease when leaving your car with them. At this point, I no longer examine their bills closely. They do not over charge and do not perform service that is not indicated. Lars did me a solid on my 2007 BMW. I needed something looked at quickly. He did a diagnostic and fixed it on the spot and charged me peanuts just for the parts. this place charges a lot for a little work. i uinderstand that it is expensive to work on cars, but these people skimp wherever they can. i had work done to the extent of almost$9000. they only fixed the minimum. they skimped on things like $0.25 o-rings. they actually put a deteriorated o-ring back in the car! it was rediculous. i ended up taking my car to another place and having it done right. if you have more money than you know what to do with, than this place is for you. if you are looking for quality repairs at a fair price, go elsewhere! read more
