My boyfriend wanted to check out Japan House after walking past it on our way to Seiwa Market. This store sells a variety of Japanese novelties, figurines, plushies, and even household items. No photography or videography is allowed inside. There is a looped announcement reminding customers of this rule. It was nice to walk through the store and look at everything, but prices are on the higher end. I'm sure you can find the same or comparable products online for cheaper. However, I really liked looking through the cooking section because they sell Japanese-specific cookware and tools. I learned that a handheld scallion slicer exists! I likely won't be back by myself because there's nothing there that I would buy. The store itself also didn't seem the cleanest nor well-kept. read more

Japan House is a very cute place, with lots of trendy anime merch. It's a lot of merch from bigger anime (One Piece, Naruto, Re:Zero, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc) and plenty of gunpla building sets. There's a good selection of male idol anime merchandise here--I'm not a big fan of idol anime period, but I know it can be hard to find anything that isn't Love Live! related, so that's a plus. Lots of Twisted Wonderland, which is great for fans of the game...Most merchandise hasn't been localized yet. I wish there was a bigger selection of plush and more merchandise from other series. I was shocked that they didn't have a wider selection of Jojo's merch, or ANY Berserk merch. I would love to be able to widen my collection from a local source. However the great range of Hatsune Miku figures will definitely keep me coming back. Staff is nice, the merchandise itself is nice, and they have multiple gachapon machines...if any of them interested me I'd be a much poorer man! Window shopping here is really fun. They have an assortment of everything anime and have a great collection of Japanese home goods. The merchandise is pretty expensive, but it's understandable because most of their items are imported. One thing that stood out to me was how strict they are here. I noticed there are a bunch of rules they expect you to abide to: no food, no drinks, no backpacks, no purses, no photography of any kind. I wasn't aware of the signs outside their door because they weren't noticeable at all. I would've appreciated it if they had a bigger, more obvious sign at the front or if they had the staff notify their customers as they come in. Having staff follow you around and single you out to tell you to remove your bag or to not take pictures makes one feel guilty and embarrassed. As for my personal experience, one staff member used the loudspeaker to tell me not to take pictures. Man, did I instantly go red of embarrassment!!! Left immediately because I felt too embarrassed. I liked the store. I like the stuff they sell. Not a fan of their insane prices for merch, but it's expected. But I highly recommend you to become aware of the rules, or you may find yourself getting called out while you are trying to shop! read more

Had two negative experiences in a row and the first time I chose not to say anything and now this time I rather share my experience First time, I've shopped here many times without any issues but I had an employee literally follow me around the store. I felt singled out but I thought to myself that they had recent theft so it's understandable I guess? I also wanted to buy a figure that had a badly damaged box. I wanted to buy it to support them and support local. I was aware it was cheaper online but they couldn't offer a small discount to compensate on a beat up box? That already kinda left a bad taste. But it is what is and I didn't brother with it afterwards. Second time, they told me I couldn't come in with my MICRO back pack. They said it was store policy and that there was a sign at the door. I wasn't too happy about that but fine I complied, it was store policy. However, I'm not leaving it in the car so I'll leave it at the front as they offered to leave it at the front. I started to shop then noticed other shoppers had large cross body bags and etc, I remembered my bag can be converted into a crossbody since it's so small. Just change the direction of the straps. So I go to the front, get my phone out of my bag and convert the bag. APPARENTLY that was still an issue. They said I can't shop with my bag at all but they didn't tell that to anyone else with a bag. I have my sanitizer, my phone and wallet in my bag and I did not feel comfortable leaving it so close to the exit at the front. I shopped with my bag anyways since I wanted to have access to my sanitizer and etc. But I was really annoyed about the situation and they didn't even bother to apologize. I felt singled out and embarrassed. Even more so since I've promoted the hell out of this store and posted popular TikToks that has gotten tons of views and new customers for them. I'm disappointed, it's ok to have that rule, I completely understand as other places have it, but never has anyone made a fuss about my micro backpack that is also a crossbody bag nor a big enough threat to steal expensive items. ALSO, make sure if you're enforcing a rule, enforce it to EVERYONE. Not just one person. It's rude and comes off as racial profiling. Be logical, and not everyone has the intention to steal. This place is getting much more variety it's nice to see old anime and the new selection all in one. They are slowly getting manga in which is amazing.The sucky thing is that it's still a small selection due to house and beauty products they sell.They also run out of the hood stuff soon due to it being low selection of them and are left with the less popular things. Was in search for anime items for my son while we were in town and this place popped up, so of course, we went to check it out. Upon entering, the place looked exciting and jam packed with a variety of different anime items to look through. Noticing the different figurines and trinkets around, the prices are severely high just comparing it to the web. Just kind of made me feel better if I were to order and wait a month to get the same item for $40-50 cheaper. My son found some things he was interested in, but they did not have a large stock of what he was looking for. Half of the store is stocked with home good items which was also priced a little over value where I could find the same items nearby for a fraction of the price. I'm glad I wasn't harassed with my side bag from other reviews. I'm guessing because I was holding my daughter whom was asleep the whole time I was in the store. They hold a strict policy of no pictures or videos in the store, for unknown reasons, as they also have it repeating through the speakers in between songs. Fairly nice place to window shop. Prices aren't too bad in comparison to china town and 99 ranch mart. If anything the shampoo and such are about a dollar or so cheaper. They have plenty of options for toys/plushies and also carry a few home goods as well. The place has a lot of variety in such a tight space. We went during the grand opening and that was a nightmare. Lol. Waaaaaaaaay to many people but you hit pretty much everything if you're in the mood for Japanese stuff. I generally love Japan House, but after traveling out of my way from Austin to go shop a few days day ago, I was quite disappointed that I wasn't allowed to shop with my purse. I went to buy one of the $99 jackets that I saw on the Internet, but after being denied entry with my purse, I left without spending a dime. I'm a 50 year old woman, not a thieving teen that I was made to feel like. Daiso opens in Austin this week and I will be spending my money there, instead. Bummer. read more

This store is alright if you need your weeb and cuteness fix. There's a wall of plushies, which I can never complain about. There's a small section of home goods, a decent section of make up and beauty products, and some miscellaneous things that are obviously over priced, like the stationary that's not even "asian" or anime related; stuff that you can find at Staples, but way over priced because they are selling it as foreign. Since the Fit Store closed down, this is the closest thing you have to a Daiso/Fit Store. Its also out of China Town traffic and bad drivers, so that's a plus. And if you are not satisfied with the goods in this store, you can also satisfy your stomach with the food goodies next door. :) read more

Very happy they opened a store like this in Houston. It's located next to Seiwa market and it seems to be an extension of it, since they moved most of their cosmetics and body care to Japan House. They have a lot of stationery, plushies & cute things, household items, kitchenware, cosmetics and a lot of other goods. I purchased a few organizing things all made in Japan. Most of their items seems to be of great quality and a lot of Japan-made items, which is a plus for me. I highly recommend this shop! read more

My daughter got Anime crazy when she went in this store. The trinkets were so cute. So many anime figures. Mostly collectibles. I didnt see any anime costumes though. Items are a bit pricey. The animu stuff is pricey in my opinion, a lot of these items can be found cheaper on Amazon, AmiAmi hobby shop, Ebay etc. The stationery is cheaper at Moshi Moshi Gifts store in China town and at Etsy online. It is convenient to buy at this location when you can go far or if your online order will take some time to be delivered. I needed some pokeball figures for my pokemon trainer costume that I put together last minute for Anime Matsuri and bought a pokeball for almost $10 a pop. I bought two pokeballs and some small keychain plushie for my bro and some rice mold, my total was around 30 dollars. I may go back for the Rilakkuma seat pillows. Overall it's a nice store to check out a few times in the year, wish they'd get some Super Sonico Figures. read more

This place has the best selection in regards of anime merch that you can only find in Japan. They also have household and beauty merch you can check out. Though with this pandemic happening, merchandise for both household, beauty and anime has been out of stock for a while, so understandable if they been out of stock for a while. There's been also a lot of notices in the entrance because people hasn't been following with the policies the store has in place to keep the customers safe and happy. There's been a lot of customers stealing lately based on what an employee has told me, same with people opening products that are meant to be sealed. This also goes to the recent ban of video recording at the store. As someone that wants a product in its prime and sealed, it really sucks to let the employee know this item is open or was tampered. The female employee I told about the item was even apologizing for the fact the item was tampered. If you go to Japan, if an employee sees you opening the item that is sealed, they will make you pay for it and ban you for ever entering the store. Same goes with no video recordings or photography in stores. At least Japan House gives you a warning if you try opening a product before buying it or lets you take pictures of the items, there's a reason why a lot of their products in the beauty and household sections either has a display or tester available and been having employees walking around more often in the floor. If the item doesn't have a tester or display, always ask the employee if they have one available. If you really want to get the best experience in Japan House, best to read all the signs before you enter the store and when you're inside as well. read more

I've recently gotten my gf to branch out and embrace anime and the Japanese culture. While walking In we enjoyed seeing the figured and planned on coming back. While looking at a figure in a case someone walked behind me so I moved up saying excuse me. I realized moments later it was an employee. Of course wasn't bothered about it. But then I noticed even though there were more than a handful of people I noticed he was always right by me watching only me. I get that I don't look like the typical fan or person who would stop by but I felt very much that was why I was watched. Never once did he say hi or ask if I needed any help. My first time, they asked me to leave my bag at the front which is fine but it leaves me without my sanitizing stuff during a pandemic. Cute store, but lacking a few things I was expecting them to carry.. I came looking for a lucky cat (yeah yeah I know bellaire) but still was thinking they might carry them, besides I can use all the good luck I can muster.. Cooking ware their selection is good, even found a proper takoyaki maker with the correct voltage for American kitchens (squid waffles for everyone!). What surprised me more than the lack of lucky cats was there was virtually no mecha stuff at all, lot of cutesy stuffed animals, and weird tolietries (weird is relative to my besting a westerner who normally don't buy products named goo.n) but almost no macross, gundam, etc, again I can go to rice village for those but seemed strangely lacking. So basically it's a home goods store with a few odds and ends, not exactly otaku mart as I was expecting, but what they do have is nice. read more

Japanese products at your hands. From household to makeup to stationary, they sell a bit of everything. Organization stuff we're on the $2 side and stationary ranged from $1-$4. The more expensive items were definitely bowls, plates, beauty products and hygiene products. I mostly came here for the Japanese stationary which I bought several of their frixon pens. They were decently priced with a range of different colors and styles. If you need good pens, I'd say definitely come here. I was hoping for more sticky notes and notebook items but those were very limited and not as cute. Staff were nice and they let you roam in peace unlike some Asian stores. I can only speak for the gunpla, but I'm fairly sure it's the best your gonna get in Houston for the huge variety of stock alone. I purchased a kit that came about a little over a month ago and probably arrived in stores in the US a bit later, the HGUC Moon Gundam, for only a smidge more for what you usually find it for online. There was a plethora of tools to be found including Gundam Markers and kits lining the entire wall of various grades and series. I'm kinda upset I forgot to take a photo. Perhaps it's only because the few shops I've been to that have stocked gunpla had pretty bare shelves, but I personally found it something to behold. Again, I went in treating it as a gunpla store, so I can't speak for the other items being sold, but it seemed pretty diverse in that aspect.
