I, like Ashley, had a super disappointing experience with Jara regarding money. I forgot to give her my new insurance card in the beginning of '13. No one in her office asked me if my insurance changed, which all offices do, not only in the beginning of a new year, but pretty much every time you go in. But I forgot, which is very unlike me to do, but I did and my bad for doing so. Months and months go by and I sent her a text about a common farmers market we go to. She responds to my question, and also mentions my insurance is denying my claims. I instantly realize that she has my old insurance and I personally drive in the new card the very next day. She then tells me that I need to pay her in full for what I owe her and then submit a superbill to my insurance to be paid back. She also wants me to pay $14 for each of the 6 times ($84) she got denied for my claims. Now wait a minute, I know a thing or two about insurance. I tell her to rebill with my new insurance information and she will be paid. She says it doesn't work that way. So I call my insurance the very next day and they say as a contracted in-network provider (which she is to me), she is obligated to rebill and they will NOT pay me back if I pay her. I call to tell her that and she seemed surprised, "I don't normally do things that way." But she still wants me to pay her $14, 6 times ($84) to pay her billing fees because they were billing with the wrong card and it's my responsibility to give her my new info. Now hold on: I was not ONCE contacted via email, text, letter or phone call about the first denial. Something slipped through the cracks at her office and they continue to bill 5 more times until FINALLY it is noticed all my claims are being denied. A normal functioning doctor office would NOTIFY the patient of the first denial. They wouldn't continue to bill and be denied over and over. Had I been notified, I would have corrected the situation immediately. She is asking me for money over voicemails. I ignore it figuring if she really wants money, she'd send me a proper bill. So within a few weeks, a proper bill shows up. I call my insurance and tell them she wants me to pay her billing charges. (BTW, I have several friends in the MD & insurance business and they ALL tell me it's super inappropriate and unprofessional of her to be asking for this.) I give my insurance a copy of the bill. A few interesting things happen: 1) I am informed she is billing me for a few things on this bill that are over the allowed amount (more than they are telling her she can bill me) and 2) the first two charges of $14 were in 2012 when she did indeed have my correct insurance. Charges that were paid immediately. So there were only 4 charges were she didn't have my new card info in 2013. The insurance does an investigation and then they inform me she cannot ask me to pay her billing charges. So she drops those charges. Now here is my favorite part: she emails me again a few weeks later and asks for the remaining payment minus her billing fee charges. I ask for an invoice. She will NOT provide me one. She emails me an amount and tells me to pay. I tell her I will not pay a bill without an itemized invoice with line items and dates. She tells me she won't do it, she is too busy to do this, and that I should just look at my EOBs. I inform her I haven't received EOBs regarding this, not to mention it says clearly across every EOB "This is NOT a bill." She tells me to go online and figure it out. So I tell her as she won't take the time to properly invoice me, I'll eventually get around to going online and figuring it all out. So then she promptly emails me all the EOBs. The amount of all of them do indeed add up to the amount she is charging .... but they are dating back 6 months. She had never been billing me all along and so a lot of little charges added up. Every other normal functioning doctor office sends you bills along the way. They don't wait 6 months and then email you an amount and refuse to send you an invoice? She was like, "I am a single mom and am self employed." Waah waah wahh.... We all have our stuff in life to deal with but clearly she isn't running her office that efficiently with things slipping through the cracks. I was super disappointed in her business skills. She does indeed seem to know her medical stuff, I will give her that, but I was left with such a bad taste in my mouth about how she does business that I am DONE. Side note: she facebook friended me within weeks of first meeting me. I eventually blocked her on FB (before this billing stuff even happened) because she rants on and on about insurance and medicine and patients and endless pictures of food and how her and her daughter are eating. Endless posts daily. It was too much to look at daily, not to mention I didn't care. All and all, a very disappointing experience. Save yourself the drama. read more
