Writing after a terrible first and only appointment. I saw the $85 special for cupping and shiatsu massage for first time customers on the website and decided to schedule an appointment to check out the place. Was told to bring my own pillow cases and sheets and towel, which was fine but strange (I've never been asked to bring my own laundered sheets before?) Upon arrival, Dr. Sonbol launched into an initial consultation, asking deeply personal questions about my body. She advised me to remove my hormonal birth control since it was "blocking my chi" and that I wasn't getting any younger and should start having babies now with my partner. I had to tell her that my partner was not a man, which didn't deter her emphasis on my IUD removal. When I told her that I was using my IUD for serious cramps and heavy periods prescribed by a real doctor, she insisted that she would be able to treat it, and was insistent on its removal. I was not comfortable with any of these assumptions. Against my better judgment, I ignored it and allowed her to treat me. Her treatment, she said, would include cupping, massage, and acupuncture, the latter of which I thought was strange to include despite what I requested, but thought this was part of her process. Acupuncture and massage was painful -- I've done acupuncture for years, but no one has ever pushed the needle into me as she has done. She pressed so hard into my back that she nearly injured my neck further. I cried out "OWWW" in pain and cried into the pillow -- that was when she finally stopped. She didn't apologize, just said that she was going to switch to cupping next. At the end of the appointment, she said I owed $315 because initial consultation was $100 and acupuncture was $115+. I argued with her because this was not what the appointment was for and I was so confused why she leapt into a consultation to begin with. She argued that her administrative assistant didn't list what type of appointment it was in her book, so it wasn't her fault. Rather than argue with her, I just paid the appointment owed but also let her know I would NEVER see her again. I regret ignoring the bad reviews on this page. What a horrible bait and switch. I hope she learns from this and practices more ethically moving forward. read more

I went to Dr. Sonbol at her Culver City location. Since writing the following review, I've had a few more sessions and about a month to use the principles she taught me. Things that she told me would happen have already started to occur, both physically and in life! Dr. Sonbol is a compassionate and joyous healer. There is no equivalent in Western medicine for what she does. From looking at my skin and feeling the energy in different points in my body, she was able to tell me in shocking detail what I have been thinking and feeling. (And my boyfriend went the same day and she told him completely different (and still accurate) things from what she told me.) Minutes into the treatment I started wishing all of my loved ones could see her. She finds the emotional roots to your issues and helps you heal from there using acupuncture, massage, dietary and herbal remedies, and sharing a world view that in the west we might think of as "therapy" or "life coaching" but is even more all-encompassing and profound. I never wrote a review before and never felt the need to, In the case of Balance Acupuncture and Dr Sonbol, It is imperative that I informed other patients of her total lack of professionalism and the damaged she had caused me. I have been in the care of Dr Sonbol since October 2015, as I suffered from serious injuries on my right leg after being assault. Dr Sonbol was one of my caregivers until April 2016. She was made aware by my attorney that it was a works men comp case and she agreed to it. She provided impeccable services at the beginning, but started to comment on how slow it was to get paid by the insurance company and how much of a problem it was for her. I understand that she is running a small business and do not have help from a billing company or a qualify medical assistant and that is her choice and never a patient problem. Whatever administrative inconvenience she has to go through, it is in NO WAY acceptable for a Doctor to make a patient feel bad and make remarks of that sort, and NOT a patient concerns at any time. I have enough to deal with, she had the choice to refuse taking the case when my attorney spoke with her before we started the treatment if paper work was an issue for her. She asked me several times to pick up scripts from my main doctor who was slow returning her calls which again is highly unprofessional and irregular, and surely not my responsibility, making me feel guilty and bad, adding additional stress and pressure to my daily life. I mentioned the conversations I have had with Dr Sonbol to my attorney who was surprised, and informed me that every one of my providers have been and continued to be paid after submitting their reports and proper paper work, she is the only one In this situation. Lastly during the last few visits I could feel the lack of attention in her work and the detachment, spending less time with me applying only few needles here and there, and on my last visit I strongly felt her will for me to no longer be her patient and she demonstrated it in the most immature and totally unprofessional way. As I was done with my "fast treatment", she lock herself in the bathroom as I could hear her on the phone avoiding me and the next appointment question that we have every week, and obviously not giving instruction to her "Office intern" who was rude as well. It was so awful to be treated with such little respect to me and to her profession. Making me feel undesirable and undeserving of treatment, she even did not had the honesty to speak to me whatever the situation was. Just dumped me in the rudest fashion, only to find out that she had not sent ONE report since February. I am still in shock! I have never been treated that way by a health care provider ever! I had a bad skin rash that I was having difficulty getting rid of when I started seeing Dr. Sonbol about a year ago. It was a problematic area around my mouth that would vary in appearance, which at its worst would ooze and weep and at its best could return to a more normal outward appearance. Conventional medical practitioners had diagnosed that my system was allergic to preservatives. So I switched over to organic foods and began to brush my teeth using baking soda. But I was having difficulty getting rid of this new skin condition so I started looking around for some other resources. A gal at the store noticed my mouth area and referred me to her sister, "a nurse". She turned out to be Dr. Sonbol, a Persian acupuncturist. Dr. Sonbol treated me with acupuncture but she also listened to my story.....When she made some diet recommendations: she suggested no wheat, no chicken, no garlic, no hot spicy food, no dairy; she suggested eating foods that are in season; she suggested eating foods that are grown and harvested locally. I began implementing her suggestions. My skin condition improved but did not completely go away. Dr. Sonbol considered my case again and then suggested that I stop taking the 20-30 supplements that I had been taking for the past 30 years as well as the one medication that I had been taking to treat a medical condition I have long carried with me. Dr Sonbol is truly amazing! I have seen her a few times regarding my low thyroid levels.
