Oxtails, cornbread, black eyed pea bussdowns with the Mac attack get down. 100% fire

It has been over 5 years since I've been here. The exact date was 8/9/2015 and I think about this place all the time. Literally. I am from Pasadena, CA, my family and I were in Birmingham the day before I registered at Miles College, sitting in the hotel. My mom, my dad, and me, being that is was my first time down South, and having grown up on the delicacies of soul food from my Mississippi/Louisiana/Memphis hailed family, I WAS EAGER to get a taste of a truly authentic Southern Soul Food restaurant. I searched my maps for "Soul Food". Jasmine's Cafe about 15 minutes away in the neighborhood of Pratt. Upon arrival, even though were black people, the scenery through all of us off. "Are you sure this is it?" "This look like some real n-word ish" "Should we get out and see?" "Let's just make it quick, n-ggas pullin up" LOL. A great lesson of never judging a book by its cover! WE GOT UP IN THERE AND GOT IN THE CAFETERIA STYLE LINE AND ALL THE BEST SMELLS OF THE WORLD WAS DRIVING ALL OF US NUTS! THE MENU OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM WERE SO OVERWHELMING WE ACTUALLY HELD THE LINE UP FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE REGULARS CAUSE WE JUST COULD NOT DECIDE!! I knew what I wanted lol, OXTAILS! AND THE YOUNG LADY WHO WAS AROUND MY AGE AT THE TIME SERVED ME UP SOME OXTAILS THAT HAD TO HAVE BEEN THE WHOLE TAIL FROM THE TOP OF THE COWS A** On Down! DELECTABLE, GRAVY, DELECTABLE. MAC AND CHEESE AND BLACK EYED PEAS, INCREDIBLE. My dad made a comment like "that's a lot of oxtails" as she continued to stuff my plate, the older gentleman behind the wall in the kitchen looking out at the line "yeah that's a lot of oxtails you heard the man what are you doing" I DONT THINK IVE EVER BEEN MORE UPSET WITH MY FATHER MY ENTIRE LIFE OUTSIDE OF THAT MOMENT, EVEN MY MOM HAD TO LOOK AT HIM LIKE WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT!! LOL NONETHELESS, I DREAM ABOUT COMING BACK TO THIS PLACE. It really makes me wish I lived out there cause I'd eat that food 7 days a week. It'd be nearly impossible to get tired of eating here and that was from one experience almost 6 years ago. A phenomenal, remarkable, truly impressionable experience. When we got back to our hotel that late afternoon.. the excitement was contagious in the car, we all couldn't wait to dig in. I wish I could remember what my parents ordered, but I do remember that Jasmine's Cafe left our stomachs full warm and full of itis lol. I really miss this place and I hope I have another opportunity to come down there. I tell people about this place all the time and it truly should be a world class destination for foodies. Fly to Birmingham, AL just for the small hole in the wall cafe/kitchen Jasmine's! This place is the beezknees and.. I really just wanna come back to enjoy their food again, I would probably order up the entire menu in a sample style lol cause I truly don't think that they'd miss with any dish they serve. And the picture I'm going to post of my plate.. was already after I was two oxtails in! I love y'all Jasmines Cafe, y'all gave me the exact experience that CA 18 year old was looking for, exceeded my expectations of what I have always envisioned of what true authentic Soul Food is. Food that is made with so much love that it's makes you feel like your right home in a place you belong! I hope you see y'all soon. I was looking at the Google reviews.. folks complaining this over excellent Soul Food should come visit a CA (Los Angeles) Soul Food spot.. just so you can pay $25 $30 for the skinniest bottom of the tail oxtails and $25 rib plates and etc. if y'all franchised or expanded out here!!!!! Yeah, y'all would put these mfs out of business. Easily.. I don't even go to Soul Food restaurants out here. The locals of Pratt and surrounding neighborhoods should be far more grateful and way less finicky cause I'd take out a fraudulent PPP loan just to raise money to get y'all to open up shop out here. I swear!

Fried green tomatoes, Mac and cheese, and beef tips and rice! Sooo good!

The food was delicious and super nice service. I would return when I am in Birmingham. It's a pick up only and that is perfect.

It's kind of hard to tell what all the food options are, so I had to ask what some stuff was. I managed to get a meat and 2 instead of a meat and 5! There were quite a few veggie options that looked amazingly delicious! I do not recommend coming here hungry or hangry. Ok, sooo I love meat loaf so naturally that's what I got. I also got collards and cornbread dressing & yes they had cranberry sauce. Everything was good tasting. The meatloaf was a little sweet to my taste so I probably wouldn't order it again. The veggies were not over seasoned or overcooked. I will definitely comeback here bc there is still just so much I wanna try. The staff is nice and took care of the crowd. I even witnessed them give a person in need food, as they were about to dig in the restaurant's garbage can outside for scraps. Made me count my blessings.. all of them! There is street parking only. I didn't have any issues parking on a Sunday afternoon. The inside of this restaurant is not big but I was comfortable dining in.

Only about 3 people at a time can hold inside before it's starts getting crowded. It stay pretty busy. Options are 1 meat with two sides or 2 meats with three sides combination. A la cart is available as well. They have ice tea or lemonade drinks in a cup that they also serve you. Lemonade was good. There's a very small counter to pay after you order. Fry chicken is tasty with perfect crisp. Collard greens were seasoned well and perfect texture. Yams (my favorite) was perfect - flavorful, not too sweet and firm but not hard. Both of us thought the Black eyed peas looked really good but taste bland. I would have preferred it without the Okra. I didn't see that when I ordered. One in our group commented the meat loaf was good. The dressing was really good too - well seasoned and tasty. After paying there's a dining area for self seating. It serves the purpose to sit and eat but definitely could use sprucing up along with the restrooms. Please seriously consider! It would make the experience much more pleasant to enjoy their delicious food. I took off two stars for that reason and yes it's that unpleasant as the tables/chairs are also too clustered together. The chairs don't fit around the table properly. Overall good southern food at a reasonable price and recommended. Skip dining in if you don't have too. Just my two cents.

For our most recent reunion, we had Mama Nem catered for our meal. We had chicken, baked and fried, macaroni and cheese, greens, and cornbread. Firstly, the fried chicken was delicious! It was seasoned and fried perfectly. The greens were delicious too, not too salty but definitely seasoned very well. The macaroni and cheese was also very delicious. It wasn't too hard or chewy, something I dislike about some, but it also had a very nice cheese flavor. Additionally, working with them for the catering process was amazing. They were extremely kind and accommodating for our family and this large meal. My parents visited once before our reunion and told me that they loved it so I had high hopes when I heard they were catering. They did not disappoint. I plan to go very soon to try some of their other meals as its definitely high up on restaurants I want to try.

The line was long, but they kept things moving with someone taking orders, which made the process efficient. We didn't get a chance to actually see the food line until we got closer to the front but if we had, we would've chosen something different. Still, our meal overall was good. The greens and the rice with gravy could've used a bit more flavor. The red velvet cake, unfortunately, was a 0/5 for me. For the price -- about $40 -- I'm not sure it was fully worth it, but I WOULD go back to try other menu items.

Parking is primarily street parking in the area, but there is also a public parking deck nearby. I'm unsure what the current cost is for the deck, but it's worth knowing if you're visiting during a busier time. I ordered the fish tacos with black beans and chose the cheese grits as my second side. Everything tasted fresh and had lots of flavor. The real star of the meal, though, was the sweet potato cake. It was incredibly moist and delicious. Honestly, I could've eaten four of them without shame or hesitation. My colleagues ordered burgers and fries. They both really enjoyed their burgers, but neither cared much for the fries. They had also requested a couple additional items after the food arrived, but those items never made it to the table. The decor is bright and fun, though it didn't quite seem to match the style of food being served. Just my personal observation. They also have a robot that helps deliver the food alongside the servers, which felt a little unexpected for the casual atmosphere and southern comfort food vibe. They were fairly busy since it was lunchtime on a Friday, but the wait really wasn't bad at all. Would I go back? Yes. Was it my absolute favorite? No. But there were definitely things I enjoyed, especially that sweet potato cake that nearly made me consider ordering dessert first next time.

We ordered the hot chicken sandwich with a side of coleslaw, and both were packed with flavor. The slaw was light, crisp, and not overloaded with mayo, with just a slight peppery kick that made it incredibly tasty. The hot chicken sandwich itself wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, but it was finger-licking good -- juicy, well-seasoned, and satisfying down to the last crumb. We truly enjoyed every bite. The ambience with its bright green, purple and white colors added to the experience. The restaurant was lively and full of people, which is always a good sign. I also caught glimpses of other patrons' dishes, and everything coming out of the kitchen looked just as delicious as what we ordered. Service was friendly and welcoming, which made the visit even better. Staff members seemed genuinely happy to be there and kept things moving smoothly. The location is right in the heart of downtown Bhama, so parking is metered street parking, but the prices were reasonable and worth it for the quality and uniqueness of the food. Overall, this spot delivered on food, atmosphere, and service. Big thumbs up from me -- I'll definitely be back!
