I actually thought we had been here before, but it was another place with a similar name; because believe me, I would not have forgotten coming here. I hope that they are able to share or keep as much of that as they can after they closed. They were pretty busy since they were within a couple days of closing. We started with the boudin, which I admit I didn't read it completely and thought we might be getting boudin balls. This boudin was the rice dish, and it was served with "ruffled" chips. Came for dinner during the last few days of service; unfortunately, we had never been before. It was crowded, but we were able to find a table, and I could tell the staff was hustling. We ordered boudin for an appetizer, and it was interesting that it was served with potato chips. When we ordered, they did tell us they weren't serving corn as a side anymore that night. I think they were reserving it for those who ordered the crawfish. I got the Shrimp Fettucine and a side of jalapeno black eyed peas. As you can see, that's not fettucine, but bow tie pasta is fine by me. They did apologize for running out. It was all very good, and pretty filling. Leftovers made for a great lunch the next day. Sadly the owners retired as of 06/21/25. I came here on the last day of operation since I had never dined here before. I had to check it out! You seat yourself and they come take your order. This is a very casual dining space with that Nola flair. The gentleman server immediately took my drink order and shortly afterwards I ordered. The seafood gumbo was good & definitely has a kick to it!! I loved the spice level it carried. Of course I had to get some crawfish and those babies were outstanding. And let me just tell you this, I am not a sauce person but their remoulade sauce is absolutely delicious. Yes!!!!! It!!! Is!!!! This was our first time here. We sat outside on the patio and enjoyed the nice weather. The service was super relaxed and talking to the waiter felt like talking to a friend. It's a pretty small place which is usually a pretty good indication that the food will be authentic to the cuisine being advertised and the place was pretty packed which is also a good sign! The tables inside weren't nearly as spread out as the ones outside so if you like your space and the weather is accommodating, definitely grab a patio seat! Lots of menu items sounded good so I asked our server for some ideas and he suggested the seafood rotini and smothered pork roast so my husband and I each got one. Both were really good! The pasta was a little spicy for me but I am generally a pretty mild girlie. The pork roast dish was right up my alley though! Would totally order it for myself next time! New owners still have the same terrible service. No Nana Pudding because the good server who made it quit because she could not make a living. Crawfish season would be OK if they did not buy the puniest crawfish available. So small that It takes forever to peel them for my girlfriend that has fancy nails. I'd been wanting to try this spot for a few weeks. After a midweek venture to 280 to help a friend, she recommended Crazy Cajun for dinner... perfect. We arrived around 6ish on a Thursday and this little spot was jumping. It's a bit of a hole in the wall but they do have some outdoor (sidewalk) seating. We grabbed one of the 2 tables available inside. It was clear that wait staff was limited... only about 3 people handling the crowd. After a minute or so, a young man greeted us and got our drink orders. He was clearly busy but took time to make us feel like we were his only table (that's the Southern charm that I love)! We skipped apps and ordered our meals. We all got the lemon pepper catfish which comes with a side and a sampler for $14. I chose gumbo Yaya (sampler) and jalapeño black eye peas( side). While we waited for our food, I noticed many orders of boiled crawfish going out... must be yummy. Our plates arrived, no lemon pepper in the fish. The gumbo was a bit bland to me but had lots of heat, a bit too much for me (my nose was running). The peas had good taste and the fish was good. I had to remind them that there was no lemon pepper. He brought some out in a sauce cup. Now, that little drizzle of lemon pepper did it for me... it took my catfish to higher heights! Oh, I also ordered a side of fried shrimp for $7. They were yummy, nothing standout though. I tasted my sister's garlic mashed potatoes and they were pretty amazing. All in all, I would return. The food is priced nicely but I didn't have anything standout (except those potatoes). Maybe I'll try a boiling pot dish or a grilled item on my future visit. It did start to get busy *as it should* and the server did wonderful keeping up w/ everyone. I was also given some extra Étouffée which was a plus. I ordered a wine as well as the grits (AMAZING, even when I ate them cold in my truck) and the dessert. I was able to meet the owner before I left and he was very nice and greeted me remembering me from the day before. I would totally recommend. It gets really busy and the kitchen is small so you may have to get a bucket of beer or a bottle of wine and wait for a minute during peak times. But that's all part of the charm. This is the kind of place where you can expect to leave with a stomach full of great food, a slight buzz and a laid back feeling without breaking the bank. If you know about Cajun food then you know it's a hotly contested subject. Who's got the best? Is this like my grandma's recipe from New Orleans? Are they using the right bread? You can decide all that for yourself. The food is good. Crawfish, etouffee, gumbo, po-boys, soft shell crab, pot roast...it's all good. I went to this restaurant on Saturday, April 16th, to place a carry out order of 3lbs. of crawfish. When the female Asian server came over to take my order, I told her I wanted to order 3lbs of crawfish to go, she told me that they did not do carry out orders of crawfish. I was told that I had to eat it there, never mind that two weeks ago I was able to carry out crawfish. When I asked if I ordered in, eat a few and then ask for a to go plate. She stop me and said, "We know the trick. You have to eat it all there and throw what is left away." I left this establishment immediately. The following Tuesday, I had a white friend of mine to call an place an order of crawfish to go. They were happy to get ready to take her order she repeated that it was a carry out order. The man on the phone said he understood, go head with your order. My friend asked him why weren't they taking to go orders on Saturday, he said, "Oh, Saturday we were doing dine in only crawfish but we were running low." To make a long story short, if you notice I talked about ethnicities because I am a middle aged black woman from Birmingham. I felt humiliated and discriminated against when that Asian lady said to me we know the tricks. Why didn't she just explain why the were doing dine in, instead of making such a demeaning statement. We decided to each get the Ya-Ya (chicken, sausage & seafood) Louisiana gumbo and share an order of fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were good but not worth $11 (overpriced). The gumbo was a hearty portion size and quite tasty; it had a nice spicy kick. However, I wish they had given us more rice (instead of the buttered bread) to balance out the amount of stew. The fried grouper was good. I grew up with a gumbo which was much lighter - which allowed the floor of the other ingredients to come through. Since venues have switched to a commercially available dark roux gumbo flavor has declined and unfortunately adding "heat" aka hot pepper is now the norm to put a Cajun stamp on it. I like hot - but with actual flavor. This place used to have better gumbo- like my great grandmother would make. No more. Just the dark hot stuff which tastes like burnt coffee. This small restaurant is the original Cajun restaurant in Birmingham. They have been serving authentic Louisiana dishes since the mid 90s. The owner is Robert, and he is the epitome of a "crazy cajun". But, "crazy" in a good way. He is from south Louisiana and he has a big, outgoing personality. I had lunch on Monday with my friend Keith S who is also from New Orleans, and a fellow wanker (that's what they call westbankers). I ordered an oyster poboy, and I thought it was just okay. First off, the poboy had only five oysters on it. I understand that oysters are a premium, but for $13 bucks I expected at least enough oysters to covers the bread. I had several bites where I hit nothing but bread! Also, the poboy was not properly "dressed". In the Big Easy, a "dressed" poboy means it is topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. Instead lettuce and onions are served on the side, The French bread was good and the remoulade spread was pretty tasty. The poboy is served with Ruffles chips and a Cajun side. I had the jalapeño black eye peas as my side, and it was excellent. It had slices of smoked sausage and chopped jalapeños that gave a nice kick. Keith ordered a shrimp poboy and it had a much better portion of fried shrimp. Keith said his sandwich was pretty good. He ordered the garlic mashed potatoes as his side. Crazy Cajuns would rightfully take a place within our routine if it were within 25 minutes from home. Unfortunately, it is in Alabama and we live in Connecticut.
