I had heard of Jason Hymes' office through a friend who went to their office on the Westside, so when I found out there was an office in Van Nuys I thought it would be good to see if their doctors could partner with me for my pain management care.
When I arrived for my appointment, I found that the office was attached to Valley Presbyterian hospital and there was only the hospital parking lot, with the streets around it having very restricted signs. I called to ask where we were supposed to park. The gal said to park in the hospital lot. I said that's usually expensive, isn't there anywhere else to park? Then she told me there was street parking on the other side of street. She could have told me that from the start. Things went downhill from there. I walk into a small waiting room that was very uninviting and "cold" feeling. There was a sad looking fish tank, plastic chairs lined up all along the walls, and Michael Jackson playing on the radio. It just felt creepy.
I went to sign in and there were at least 4 people behind the counter, none of which said hello. One was texting on her phone and didn't look up. I saw a sign that said "no credit cards, cash only" which took me back, since I wanted to use my FSA card. I caught one young man's attention behind the counter, the only one that actually seemed nice, and he confirmed that they don't take any cards, even FSA cards. At that point I wanted to leave but decided to stick it out.
A gal opened the door and invited me in, but only to just stand inside the door where the reception was. She confirmed my name, and then said gruffly "Do you bring your MRI's or medication with you?" I said no. She said "who referred you?" I said that I did, that I was there on my own volition and my insurance didn't require me to get referrals. She said, "well I told you on the phone we needed your records of medications and MRI's" to which I replied, "I can speak to that."
She then, without saying another word, turned and walked away, and sat down in an office down the hall. I didn't know what to do so I just stood there and looked at her. She then looked up and said, "you can go sit down now." I went back into the awful waiting room, and every part of my being told me to run, that these were not good people. After toying with the concept of walking out for about a minute, I did so and called my regular doc to leave a message that this was not the place for me (we had discussed my going here previously) and that I would look for someone else.
All I can tell you is, everything in me told me to run from this place. The staff are horrible (except for the one young man behind the counter), they didn't greet me, a new patient, in a professional, happy and courteous manner. They assumed that I had a referral when in reality I can go wherever I want, I don't have to be there and get treated like crap. Having to deal with chronic pain is awful enough and we are already on edge about how we will be treated...the last thing we who deal with chronic pain need are staff treating us like crap the moment we walk in the door. In my opinion, when staff treat people like that and hate their jobs, it's an attitude coming from the top down...the doctors must treat people that way too, and that's what they see and learn...or else the doctors are too blind to see they need to fire some people. Either way, I don't want to stick around and find out which one it is.
Oh and do something about that awful waiting room. read more
