Today, paths and parks parallel much of the waterway. Waller Dam, built around 1864 and modified in 1915, split Mill Creek into this millrace and what is sometimes referred to as North Mill Creek. The millrace flows through the Willamette Heritage Center, where you can take a tour of the old Thomas Kay Woolen Mill and then the Willamette University campus. There is also a fish ladder as part of the dam to allow anadromous fish to pass. A small park, there is also a picnic table and a small grassy area. Not a spectacular park, but is an interesting part of the history of Salem.

If you ever have a chance or the time to stop and see this memorial, you should. It's not very big…read more It's surrounded by an animal refuge. The whole area was a World War II training camp. At the time, it was considered the second largest city in Oregon. It housed 4 different regiments. After their training, 2 regiments went to Europe and 2 went to the Pacific. It's a great place to visit and learn a little history about where we live and about our country. It's especially important to me because I had a great uncle who was trained here.

The restrooms are brand new (sticker said 2021,) the trails are well maintained and easy, and it is right by the Willamette River. Not a lot of trash and random people hanging out, though I did see the cap of a needle (at least if someone was shooting up, they picked up their needle.) Lots of wild animal scat, which made me wonder what sort of wildlife I would see during the early morning and evening hours- it appeared to be bobcat and coyote, though I saw some that looked oddly like black bear. The hike's aren't terribly exciting, but it's easy and probably good for kids or people that don't particularly like hiking.

That keeps this an extremely peaceful and quite place to sit and read by the river. Not going to share how to get here precisely, to keep it the way I like it, but there are a couple of paths that link the 2 parks. On bike just be aware that the paths are often loose gravel or narrow, rutted trail, my hybrid bike did o.k., but wouldn't recommend anything with narrow tires. Nice views of the river, which can get a bit noisy with motor boats and jet skis, but it isn't constant on this part of the river, good viewing of birds and other wildlife as well.
