I was driving home today. I happen to be driving past the Capital building in Salem and noticed a…read moreMemorial to World War two. I didn't know it was there. I guess it's been there since 2014. I stopped to check it out. I love Memorials. It's pretty cool. They have the names of those who gave their lives for our freedom. There is a tall spire in the middle of a map of the World. The map has areas of the war marked. If you come to visit the Capital building, the Memorial is on the west side of the building. I highly recommend visiting.

This giant globe was built with a great intention and has a lovely meaning behind it that spreads…read moreawareness of the cultures that our world shares. It definitely means a lot to the community in Salem as well. The artist even allowed local high school students help mold and paint the tiles with wildlife and cultural references from around the world. This was heavily funded by the community and you can see that many people contributed to the art piece. Unfortunately, the art piece is about 18 years old now. It is currently going under restoration due to age (possibly vandalism?). Some of the tiles have fallen off and the vibrant colors are starting to fade. The globe also has a large black fence around it that can be annoying for photos, but I guess it somewhat protects to the art piece?

If you're willing to walk a bit farther, you can reach the Oregon State Capitol building and Willamette University too! So there's lots of areas to go to if you're on a jog or bike ride. This is only a pedestrian bridge, so there's not vehicles going through!

Very interesting place but some of the exhibits need more information. We had several questions…read morebrought up by the displays- some we could lookup online but others - like the piece of tree in the visitors center that poses the question how old is it based on the rings was left unanswered We learned it's non profit so I'm sure funding and volunteers might be hard to come by If the green light is lit when you are in the main building definitely check out the floor that has people weaving - it was neat to see it in action Would also be nice if all volunteers were trained equally - a tour hide we encountered was lacking answers to our questions but other volunteers passing us heard us and stopped and took time with us which was super nice I hope they can improve and expand because it was so historical and interesting
