Came here recently for a blow out and was really impressed with the way it came out. I decided to try out the salon based on the reviews of Yelp, since I have been to a variety of salons for blowouts. This salon is in a great location, only a few blocks off the square and on the second floor of a nice looking building (not sure if they have a way to get upstairs if you are unable to take the steps, so I'd suggest calling ahead). My stylist was pleasant and efficient. She listened to what I wanted and it still looked great the following day. Would definitely return! read more

I highly recommend this salon! I was in town for a conference last week and also had multiple events to attend. I needed a cut and styling, and the salon accommodated my last minute appointment on a Friday afternoon. All the staff were incredibly nice--from the greeting at the front desk to washing my hair, everyone was friendly. Kathy was my hairstylist, and she has decades of experience under her belt! It showed from the way she conversed with me as a client to her professional skills in cutting and styling my hair. Kathy delivered exactly what I wanted. I get haircuts every two years because it's hard for me to trust hairstylists because they always cut my hair too short when I request to "keep the length." Kathy trimmed my dead ends but kept the length and styled my hair based on what she thought would hold for the weather. I loved getting to know her as well! I've visited this one for the first time Saturday to have my hair done for my 50th birthday party. It was a huge event and I was nervous about trying a new salon. The minute I walked in I felt welcomed and could see the level of skill and professionalism by the staff. The salon is very chic and welcoming. Jessica was my stylist and Anthony was the assistant who washed my hair and made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed while I waited. Sitting with Jessica I explained to her what I was hoping to do and she listened and didn't rush me at all. It was a great experience and I can honestly say I don't think my hair ever looked better. It stayed the whole night even though it was humid and I got so many compliments. Even the party venue staff asked where I had it done. Let me start by saying I've been to a lot of salons. Like ALOT. Finding a good colorist for my blonde hair is always a challenge and new/young colorists tend to be a little scared to do what I ask for. After coming home and complaining about my newly colored hair once again, a friend of mine recommended I go see Joyce (also a blonde), and I'm so glad I did. After at least a half dozen colorists, my hair seemed to be slowly getting darker and more brassy despite my pleas for bright, cool blonde highlights. Big kudos to this salon for being able to accommodate me on such short notice. Josh spent a fair amount of time on me helping me change my brown hair with blonde highlights to something "sleek and shiny," a lot bolder and more daring. "I've been going to the same stylist for the past three years and feel it's time for a change," I told him. He agreed that change is good. As this was my first time with him, I studied his actions carefully and, except for one point when it was busy, he really put his all into working with me. I could tell by the way he cut my hair that he really enjoys what he's doing and has a passion for it. My previous stylist at another salon sometimes left me with a feeling of disconnectedness, like she really didn't want to be there. Not so with Josh. He was communicating with me every step of the way. This salon is a huge upgrade for me. My previous salon used to be nicer than it is now, but downgraded its interior space because the owner cheaped out to maintain its prices, so I was very pleased with the way Jason Matthew Salon looked and felt (and I've been to quite a few, since my ex was a stylist at several of the top salons in the Philly burbs). I am heading on vacation and wanted to touch up my highlights before going. I came here after looking at the reviews about color and found the whole experience so upsetting that I have to leave a review to warn others. Three things really caused me to leave this 1-star review: 1) they charged me an extra $70 for "balayage foil" and gloss without consulting me, 2) the stylists were not nice at all, and 3) they tried tacking on extra services when I initially set the appointment. 1) Balayage highlights require no foil. I've had them before, I will likely get them again. I asked for highlights, not balayage, and foil was used for all my highlights. The cashier insisted that my hair was highlighted with balayage with foil and charged me $150 rather than the standard $110. An extra $30 was added for the gloss, when I did not ask for it. The current highlights also start about two inches from my roots, which means I will need to go back sooner for a touch up. 2) I tried numerous times to make conversation with my stylist as an hour and a half to spend in a salon is a lengthy amount of time. After responding curtly to my questions, she would go silent or prefer to speak with others in the salon instead. 3) When I initially called to make the appointment for highlights, I received an email confirmation of highlights with a haircut. Upon calling to say I didn't want the haircut, they asked if I would want a blow dry instead, which was included with the haircut but not the highlights. The blow dry was an extra $40, and since I was going to be heading to a workout class, I didn't want to get a blowout. The lady on the phone: "so you'll just walk out of the salon with wet hair?" Beware their rude demeanors and sneaky ways of charging extra services on that you never needed. read more

Finding a new stylist after moving is such a hassle, and I'm lucky I found Josh at Jason Matthew Salon. I have fine medium-long hair, and it is hard to find someone who doesn't want to add too many layers or cut a blunt edge. Josh was quick and accommodating-- gave me a perfect cut in 45 minutes on a Monday morning. I've received several compliments! I was really impressed with this salon. Its a really nice space, not cramped, and there wasn't a "rushed" feel like some other salons I have been to in center city. Came in today and Josh Demarco never seizes to amaze me. My hair looks better every time I come. He was honest when he told what I had to do to achieve the look I wanted 6 months ago. Josh is responsive to my requests. And teaches me how to properly style my hair at home. After 11 years of living in Philadelphia and paying for really bad haircuts and color, I had just about given up hope after a terrible experience with a highly-rated stylist at another highly-rated salon, whose definition of balayage and Ouidad cut was vastly different from that of the salon industry. However, I took a chance with Joyce, one of the owners at Jason Matthew Salon who really IS Ouidad certified and really IS a well-trained colorist and stylist. Joyce was recommended by the salon's knowledgeable and personable receptionist who knew exactly which stylist could fix my Dee Snyder/Twisted Sister, aging groupie disaster. After Joyce took out the French braid I had been wearing in order to hide my fried, badly damaged and bleached hair, she asked me what I thought was wrong with it. I told her. She nodded her head in agreement. She made recommendations - no, she couldn't color over color without damaging my hair further; yes, I have enough length left to cut out the burnt three to four inches and have a legitimate Ouidad cut; yes, a glaze will improve the condition of my hair and tone down the white and bright orange (no exaggeration here) - and immediately she and her assistant got to work. Two hours later, a happy, calm 54yo professional walked out of the salon with her style and dignity restored. Joyce has been cutting my hair ever since, and now that the awful Nancy Spungen color has completely grown out after a year and a half, I am ready for Joyce to do the balayage. DON'T GO HERE. My hair is ruined and it will take years to grow out. I sat there for 3 hours while my stylist had her assistants checking on me and left with it looking the opposite of what I asked for. I had to schedule an appointment to come back. I came back and she put me under heat and left her assistants on me but no one was actually checking. Long story short - the top half of my hair was totally burned off. I have long thin hair and half of my hair is now gone - which shows a lot. I really liked my stylist but she didn't care or know what she was doing. It's been almost 5 months since my "worst haircut ever" that I received at this salon. I've had 2 cuts since at another salon to try to "rescue" this haircut. Everyone's comment about the cut I received here was along the lines of "did you get this done at a beauty school" or "did you do this yourself". I think in 3 more months my hair will be normal again. There is nothing worse than a bad haircut if you are a working professional and depend to some degree on having a polished look. This salon offered me a refund and when I called (twice) to talk to the office manager about it both times I was told that the manager had just stepped away from her desk. I.e. the salon had no intention of ever giving me a refund on the bad haircut. Not that that would help grow my hair back, but it should have been the least they could do to ease the pain. I was beyond disappointed with this salon. Obviously, I will never go back and I hope that I prevent others from using this salon before they also make a huge mistake and have to suffer, as I have, for 9 months with a "transitional rescue haircut" If you want a choppy mullet cut, this salon is for you. So, here's an update on why I changed my star rating. About ten days after posting on Yelp, I got a phone call from Renee, (I believe the front end manager). She asked me about my experience and was very concerned about my dissatisfaction with my haircut. Our conversation was more that her trying to soothe a dissatisfied customer, she actually listened to my comments. She offered me many options to compensate for my poor experience. We finally settled on a solution and I was more than happy. I would most definitely return to Jason Matthew Salon if I lived in the Phila area. Respecting and valuing a customer's opinion is one of the most important aspects of a successful business. Every hairstylist can have a bad day, I get it. I've been going to Meg Smith here for a good 4 or 5 years. After a really disastrous haircut from a "celebrity stylist" in the city--seriously, dude, I wasn't telling you that my hair was really thick because I was complimenting myself, I was warning you!--I knew that I needed to find someone who cut straight hair. Not straightened hair, not mostly straight hair, but just straight hair. I found Jason Matthew, they pointed me toward Meg, and the rest is excellent hair history... Seriously though, it is EXCELLENT HAIR. Like, mine is great. I don't get it colored (with the exception of one time we did a fun hot pink streak in my hair) and it's not altered at all. All I need is a simple cut. I always tell Meg that her business model is awful, because she gives me a simple cut that is so good and grows out SO NICELY that I don't have to see her more than once every 4-6 months. (She tells me I shouldn't worry about her staying busy.) She's never pressured me to do something different--she gets me, she gets my hair, she gets my style. She can do trendy, but I'm not, so we don't. She can do fun, but I'm not, so we don't. She can do a hot pink streak, and I told her I wanted that, so we did. AND! To top it all off, because I'd gone there for so long, when it was time for 5 of us to have our hair done for my sister's elope-to-Rittenhouse-Square wedding over the 2018 holidays, we obviously booked Jason Matthew ahead of time. We worked with Renee, who was an absolute champ; Jason himself did the bride's hair and another stylist did ours (3 girls, late 20s/early 30s) and my mother's (mid-60s). My mom says it's very hard to find someone who does "young" hair as well as "old" hair and was over-the-moon pleased with how her "old" hair turned out. They also recommended and came with the makeup artist. NO ONE could have felt better that day than we did. The bride looked spectacular--Jason, who is obviously the best of the best when it comes to this, was the most pleasant and down-to-earth person you could expect, and his team was so casual and calm and happy to watch us have fun getting ready. I've been going to Edith for waxing services for the last 2 years. Prior to her, I'd tried a few other estheticians who've never measured up. And to be able to compliment someone on making a waxing experience relatively comfortable and less painful is a huge plus, in my opinion. Edith is a true professional...wears gloves, uses new sticks, wax and strips each time. Prices are really great, compared to other Center City salons (e.g. $50 for a Brazilian wax). I also just decided to get my hair done here since I was going to Edith every month or so anyway. I was paired up with Bernadette who was very attentive to what I wanted. I have stick-straight hair and was concerned about the cut since some stylists don't seem to cut Asian hair well. Anthony is the BEST waxer in Philly! Seriously, I was a life long shaver and had never treated myself to a Brazilan or professional waxing experience of any kind...now I have no idea why I ever waited so long. Upon the advice of my girlfriends, I finally decided it was time to try waxing, and trust me, being Italian/Mexican I was scared of the pain...I told Anthony I'd never been waxed before and he kindly gave me a pillow to squeeze throughout the session. He's so quick that, while it hurts, he gets you in and out in 10 minutes flat - not enough time for your pain sensors to truly understand what happened. Some yelpers may be looking for the entire spa experience and be inclined to pay $60 for a 45 Brazilian wax, me? I'm all about efficiency and minimizing the amount of time wax and waxing strips are adhered to my private regions. If you've never tried before, go to Anthony - he's awesome and after a few sessions it's less painful because the growth comes in thinner...ok enough details. Anthony is also great at eyelash tinting - I've had the black and the blue black tint (which he recommended because I have blue eyes) and both lasted for 3-4 weeks and looked amazing. Honestly ladies, not sure what you're waiting for if you haven't had your eyelashes tinted before, who doens't want to wake up and look "done"?!? I have been going here for 3 years now. I have had nothing but fantastic experiences. The owners are so kind and so professional. I go to Josh DeMarco who is literally the best stylist I have ever been to . I have had everything from cuts to extreme color changes with him, and everything always comes out AWESOME! I have done ombre a few times and changed my color from all different shades of browns to electric red. I would highly recommend him. Most of my friends go to him as well. I absolutely love Jason & his entire team! I found the salon after moving to Philly from Toronto and Jason is absolutely one of nicest/caring people I have ever met. True story. Such a caring individual who has spent days where he stayed hours after closing just to accommodate us and ensure we were completely happy. As a newbie to Philly (10 years ago) I was getting my hair cut in Chinatown on the cheap. Now as an adult, I decided to grow up and go to a fancy pants salon. Jason Matthew Salon is really nice inside, but not super fancy and not outrageously expensive. The receptionist paired me with Bernadette who "does amazing things for straight hair." It's not nearly as inexpensive as Chinatown, but Bernadette makes my hair look so pretty and does something magical for my bangs. I probably - ok, definitely - don't get my hair cut as often as one with long hair should, and she gives me free bang trims, so in the end I even out with my Chinatown lady. Yesterday was my first time at JM Salon. I saw Kathy for highlights. I am SO happy with the job she did. I told her I wanted to brighten up my hair and make my highlights lighter than they were.
