The appointment setter was not helpful. I injured myself and went to the ER I was recommended to this office. The docotor is out of office and she informed the other doctor is in later in the week. I had to ask her to check that doctor's availbility for me, she did not even want to look. She comes back to just say they aren't free until October you should go to Sutter Health. She offers no help, no phone number just telling me what street Sutter Health is on. I ask her how will they know my issue if I was referred here and she goes they can look it up in epic. So basically she just wasn't helpful at all. I call Sutter Health and EVENTHOUGH they didn't have anything until January she still was able to find me and on call doctor in Dublin for this Thursday. So essentially this appointment setter could've at the bare minimum sent my refferal to Sutter Health or check with them or something. Because they still needed my information. Got here early and filled out forms. Waited an hour and fifteen minutes to be seen. An ear exam was performed on the ears for about 2 or 3 minutes. We are in the waiting room again for the hearing test. The appointment has seemed very rushed, staff seemed overwhelmed and doesn't feel like a professional setting. Horrible experience, will never make an appt to see Dr. van Tassel again. Made the appt in Feb for soonest available, April 11. His office called me on March 31 to reschedule to April 4, he wanted a play day on April 11. I said I wasn't available on April 4 and the woman didn't offer any other dates or times. That was that, MY APPT WAS cancelled, THEY HAD TOLD ME HE WASN'T AVAILABLE ON APRIL 11. I got a text approx. April 4 to enter "Yes" or "No", was I keeping the appt. I texted "No". I got a call the week of April 11 to move my 2 pm appt on April 11 to earlier that day (MY APPT WAS CANCELLED). I left a voicemail message it was cancelled (LEAVE ME ALONE). I got another call on April 10 to move my April 11, 2 pm appt (IT WAS CANCELLED) to earlier that day. I left a message on April 10 that I previously texted "No", left a voicemail it had been cancelled BY HIS OFFICE and to again, leave me alone. On April 11 morning I got a call AGAIN to come in before 2 pm. I recapped for her that his office had CANCELLED my appt BECAUSE HE WASN'T AVAILABLE and LEAVE ME ALONE! Do not recommend this provider. I had surgery for a deviated septum, then continued to have horrible symptoms so he recommended a 2nd surgery for sinuses. He acknowledged both procedures should have been done during the 1st surgery but he had not done a thorough evaluation/should have ordered CT scan to confirm the extent of the issues. After 2 surgeries, my sinus infections were much worse and I had new symptoms. I switched care to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto and had a 3rd surgery to fix the previous 2 surgeries. Care at Stanford was top notch and my symptoms are finally resolved. Highly recommend Stanford - much more professional and top notch care. read more

Very mixed experience. I saw Dr. Van Tassel because he was listed on the Clarifix website, which my ENT at PAMF thought might be worth investigating for my ear (and mild nasal) congestion, as well as a 2nd opinion about my 4 month Eustachian tube dysfunction battle. I agree with another reviewer about his quirky personality, which I normally wouldn't mind in most situations. However, I've been in a lot of distress and he did not inspire confidence in his abilities to fix my problem. First, the wait time to see him as a new patient is ridiculous. I called in January and could not get an appointment until the second week of March. In mid-February, the staff pushed my appointment out two weeks later. I'm not blaming the doc for being out of the office but having to wait when I've already had to wait a long time was frustrating. I've never had to wait that long to see a doctor anywhere else in the past year and a half I've lived in Fremont. I arrived about 25 minutes before my appointment and the front desk staff didn't acknowledge me. There was only one other person and 2 people at the front desk. While I did walk in while the person at the front (who was initially the only one there) was helping another patient, she never said "I'll be with you in a second." I'm a receptionist myself, and even if I'm helping someone and I'm at the front desk alone, I always acknowledge the person waiting and thank them for their patience. NO acknowledgement by this front desk what so ever...poor first impression. I had a hearing test and liked the audiologist who was very kind and thorough. I would give her 5 stars. Much better than the audiologist I saw in the summer of 2018 at PAMF. She's the reason this review is a 3 rather than 2 star review. I was taken back around my appointment time and didn't have to wait long for the doctor which I appreciated. That said, I did not feel that Dr. Van Tassel was worth waiting two months for. When Dr. Van Tassel came into the room, he had this "oh whatever" attitude that felt off putting. While I was happy that he agreed the Clarifix procedure wasn't appropriate for my situation and seemed open to balloon dilation for ETD, his thought process seemed to jump all over the place. Several times, he interrupted me when I was talking. He also made comments about mastoid fluids in a CT scan but couldn't seem to tell me which one, and I had to keep asking him to clarify as my ENT at PAMF ordered three CTs in 2018. He couldn't give me a straight answer and said that finding isn't clinically significant. Then why bring it up in the first place? Worst of all, he seemed really dismissive of my frustration with current and past ENTs. He told me that he takes months to reply to emails and that I shouldn't give my ENT a hard time about taking over a week to get back to me when my symptoms were getting worse. I see several doctors and all but my current ENT reply to me within the week. Can I just say I'm amazed that he thought he was allowed to talk to me like that? A good doctor VALIDATES, not DISMISSES patient concerns and feelings. My frustration with my ears and how my ENT's lack of follow up is REAL and is MY experience, NOT HIS. Even if he has different opinions regarding how quickly a provider should reply (which is fine, as I wouldn't tell someone their opinion is wrong), he didn't need to brush me off. He also told me my anxiety is causing my ear pain, when I told him I've gone and am going off anxiety meds prescribed by previous psychiatrists because I don't think that diagnosis was accurate and those psychs were too quick to push medication. I felt like he thought that the pain was all in my head. He also complained about insurance companies, the shortage of ENT doctors in CA due to cost of living, and the technique that my ENT in DC used to perform my tonsillectomy 5 years ago. If I were at a more stable place in my ENT health I wouldn't have minded those complaints, but it didn't give off a great first impression. He told me to follow up in two months, and of course I did not make that appointment because he didn't validate or address my concerns effectively. I DEFINITELY do not want this guy operating on me! If he can't inspire trust in the office, why would it be any better in the OR? Not going back. read more

After my 4th visit with Dr Van Tassel again, hearing "there's nothing wrong" I asked him to look at the CT he ordered (from visit #3) he looked at the CT which I had already looked and read said "you need surgery. " He got up and left the room. I was told by his staff that he'll tell me what and why and how at my pre-op. I've worked in the medical field since age 16, the Dr's loved teaching me, Kaiser hosp 32 yrs (ER , 22 yrs surgery clinic all other debts too) I scheduled surgeries, I never didn't have a Dr explain the surgery to the patient at THE visit. I had no symptoms, it was an ER Dr that told me (sternly) to see an ENT. I told him I've seen one, he said "see another" when I had a procedure at Stanford (for some different problem) I was told "there's a channel from L to R in my sinus" Dr Van Tassel hasn't even addressed this issue. All I heard for 4 visits is, there's nothing wrong. At visit #3 I got angry and said, "if I see this ER Dr again I'll refer him to you" he ordered a sinus CT. He didn't even know he order it at visit #4 until I told him (after he said nothings wrong) upon seeing the CT all I get is "you need surgery?" I don't trust him (sorry for the diction, I'm in pain and don't feel like backing up to fix it) read more

Took my daughter in to get her ears checked because she was complaining about not being able to hear well. Office vibe felt morgue-like, very somber and uninviting, but it was a short wait. I believe Dr Van Tassel is really good at what he does, but he's got no bedside manners and to be honest, he's quite disgusting. Was not wearing any gloves, and didn't see him wash his hands either. At one point during the procedure, he actually picked out her earwax with his finger! I was mortified, but apparently, he does this all day so it's normal for him. While cleaning her ears, I noticed he flicked some of the wax onto the pillow and floor, gross! I mean, use a tissue or something. Also didn't see any disinfecting being done by staff before or after our visit and this during the pandemic, mind you. I seriously question this offices sanitation, but 4 stars because she was able to hear again, yay! read more

My sinusitis became worse with new symptoms only two months after sinus surgery by Dr. Van Tassel. I had to re-do the surgery with another specialist. It turned out that there was a fungal ball in my left sinus. Dr. Van Tassel either did not see it or could not remove it. Either way, he does not seem to be a qualified surgeon. Big lesson learned: Do not rely on good online reviews to find a physician. Specifically in this case, the good Google reviews for Dr. Van Tassel look suspicious afterward since there were tons of 5-star reviews with few or no comments in a very short period of time. read more

Dr. Jason Van Tassel, MD is an excellent physician/surgeon! Upon getting a telephone referral from my PCP for possible neck cancer, Dr. Van Tassel saw me in his office immediately. He took biopsies, which were positive for cancer. He ordered all scans and tests necessary to begin treatment quickly.He performed radiacal neck dissection sooner expected and took excellent care of me for last 6 months. Results of treatment (Surgery, Radiation, Chemotherapy) were a great success! Dr. Van Tassel is very friendly, always listens, is blunt regarding prognosis, gentle, but firm. He is the BEST. This guy is great. I had been having an issue for a few years with my throat and after going through quite a few different medications over the years that did nothing I finally went and saw him. Within a few minutes he gave me an accurate diagnosis and suggested the right medication for me. That was a few months ago and now I feel like a million bucks. I went to Dr. Van Tassel in July 2020 because I was interested in getting a Clarifix treatment to see if it would stop my constant runny nose caused by nonallergic rhinitis. When I saw him, he said that he could do that but I also needed turbinate reduction and that I had a deviated septum that need to be straightened. I told him that had been to multiple ENTs and nobody had diagnosed a deviated septum. He said that it was very high up and they probably just didn't see it. I would of course have to have to be admitted to the hospital for surgery as opposed to just the Clarifix in-office treatment. I received a quote for all of this so have documentation of Dr. Van Tassel's recommendation. The idea of recovering from sinus surgery given the fact that I am very claustrophobic about any blockage of my nose and mouth, was basically terrifying, so I decided to start with the Clarifix treatment. That definitely helped - for a while. During a follow-up visit he recommended that I have turbinate reduction. He wanted to do this surgically instead of an in-office procedure. That really didn't appeal to me so I went to a couple of other doctors for consultation. One of the doctors ordered a CT scan of my sinuses. Guess what - MY SEPTUM IS PERFECTLY STRAIGHT. Dr. Van Tassel recommended a totally unnecessary and potentially harmful surgery. I can only guess that it was for monetary gain. I really don't have to say anything more than that. read more

Dr. Van Tassel changed my life with the apnea surgery he performed. I had tried using several different types of CPAPs, but could not make them work for me. After a new sleep study (last had been several years prior) and exploring the CPAP options, he suggested two apnea surgeries in conjunction. He carefully explained the whole procedure, made sure I knew what to expect (First week sucks, second week isn't exactly a vacation, then it gets better fairly quickly), and got me scheduled for a time frame that worked for me. The improvement to my sleep was obvious even the first nights after the surgery when all the pain and swelling was fresh. Once it all cleared up...I haven't slept that well in probably decades prior. I saw Dr. Ortlip in the same ENT group. He was very arrogant and talking down at me. He did not even ask what i was there for. He seemed to have reviewed my record and assumed he already knew. Asked me a few questions but no thorough examination. When i asked him questions about my throat condition he responded with "i do not know". , "i was not there when it happened", "i am not a dentist", "give it time and it might go away". I am wondering if he is technically competent or was profiling us. He seemed angry and was so rude we left the office shaking in disbelief. We cannot believe he will charge Medicare for this interaction. I will avoid this doctor in the future. I learned more from google than from this office visit. read more

So far, so good. I have seen Dr. Van Tassel twice and he seemed quite solid. I have had two turbinectomies already and the previous surgeon stupidly operated on the same side both times, leaving my right side 90%+ clogged up and my septum bent zig-zag like a lightning bolt. Very frustrating. This is why I sought a new ENT doc and found Dr. Van Tassel. His mannerisms are very dry, blunt, and quite funny *if* you get his humor. One can tell that he is a visual and data-driven person as opposed to a chit-chatter. He is quite open with imagery, test results, and discussing treatment options and common ways that ears, noses, and throats can go wrong. He would be a fantastic engineer. Just had my first visit with Dr. Van Tassel, more than likely my last. I went into see if I needed surgery for sleep apnea and remove my tonsils. My appointment was at 3 p.m. and I was not called into a examination room until 4:20. I waited almost 1 1/2 hours, according to the office they were behind, but no one made no attempt to even tell any of the patients, unless they asked. All the MAs continually stated was that "the doctor will see you shortly." I sat in the exam room for another 15 minutes until finally the Dr. Van Tassel walks in. First he apologizes for the wait, which I appreciated. But then he goes on and criticizes my current medical insurance and "that everyone thinks medical insurance should be free, when it is definitely not." I do not know if he stated this to me because I am young (mid twenties), stressed out due to the backup of patients, or just a genuinely mean person. Either way it was unprofessional. He checked out my tonsils and agreed that I need surgery, walked me out into the waiting room and left me to his surgical coordinator. Mind you, this all happened in maybe less than 5 minutes. I went to Dr. Van Tassel when I had severe vertigo. I was completely immobile by the condition and freaked out! Dr.Van Tassel performed the "Epley" maneuver and I felt better immediately---it was really magical! I was not completely "cured" but the relief was instant. The hospital had suggested taking various meds to drain my sinuses and Dr. Van Tassel was confident it had nothing to do with my sinuses. I have been seeing Dr. Van Tassel for at least three years now maybe four. I had an old school ENT Doctor and all he believed in doing for my sinus problem is flushing them out , with a needle mind you. I went to Dr. Van Tassel he scoped me which the other Dr. Could not do and said my sinuses were just fine allergies were a main cause. Gave several samples of allergies sprays and we found one that worked. The second time I was concerned I might have throat or esophageal cancer he came in the room he said let's take a look the scope was a breeze and he said it was GERD. No one ever diagnosed me with that. Started me on a great new med called Dexillant and I have not had in issue since. Look, if you want the best ENT doctor with a very kick back attitude that does not scare the heck out of you Dr. Van Tassel is number one. We are very lucky to have him here in the bay area. Dr. Van Tassel was amazing. I had a tumor on my neck that I had since childhood. Over the last two years I noticed it getting bigger and it started to be uncomfortable to the touch. Dr. Van Tassel booked surgery to remove the tumor within a few days. I have to say it was the most painless surgery and the recovery time was very quick. Did a great job removing a cyst in my maxillary sinus, nasal septoplasty and reduction of the nasal turbinates. I was having constant dull headaches and dull earaches. Since the surgery 2 months ago, it has disappeared. Sinus cysts are usually found while looking for something else. I thought my breast cancer had mets to my brain so my pcp ordered an MRI and found the cyst. Turns out it was the culprit. Dr. Van Tassel knows his stuff. This MD was VERY confident in his abilities and persuaded my husband to undergo his knife for sleep apnea. Not only did Van Tassel not fix the problem; he made it worse. We cannot sleep in the same room or take vacations where we can share our room due to the level of sleep apnea. My husband was in excruciating pain for weeks and had a swollen face for at least 2 months. He also prescribed a pain medication which contained a drug which we explicitly stated my husband could not have. I only wish we could undo what Dr. Can Tassel did to my husband. read more
