I guess I feel ignored by my interaction with this office. My cardiologist recommended a sleep study. I was excited because I wanted to figure out why I don't sleep much anymore. For instance, last night I only slept 3.5 hours. I am not tired throughout the day but may get sleepy around bedtime. Maybe this is normal for me. My watch complains about my poor sleep quality. When I arrived the P.A. was extremely excited for me to visit and repeated this many times. She was oh so very very happy and excited for me to visit them and assured me multiple times that they would help me and extend my life. She was oh so very very happy I came to them and expressed how wonderful it was I was there. They would take care of me and help with my sleep issues. I opted for the home sleep study and they found mild sleep apnea. I selected the machine rather than oral insert or surgery. Nothing was found about my lack of sleep. That night I got to sleep at my usual time, 10pm and woke at 3am. I was so upset I texted the PA and noted that I need to go to another clinic to deal with this. She texted that she would escalate. Weeks later I had not heard anything about the machine but got a voicemail from someone named Steve. I returned his call and left a message with him. A woman called me back and seemed extremely agitated that I had called. Sometimes I don't read people correctly but she did seem upset and kept asking if I wanted to leave a message. I thought I had already done so but chose to do so again. I told Steve that I appreciated his call but I need help with why I cant sleep anymore and feel that I need to go to another clinic to deal with this. No one has called me back about the machine and I wanted to pursue it. This was a couple months ago. No one ever called about the machine. Steve never called me back. It is like I don't exist. I was 10 minutes late for the appointment after trying to find the office because there's no signage in the lobby and went around the building trying to find someone to direct me and tell me I had to take the elevator to 3rd floor. We were Reffered to Dr. Gersten for our Son for his sleep apnea. Based on the results we had to get surgery done. Dr. Is not only an awesome surgeon but his friendly nature really helped us. He consulted us as much as we needed. I cried few times and he assured me he is taking care of our son as he would of his own. After the surgery, he spoke of all the possibilities but there were times I emailed him like four times a day. He was super warming and kind hearted in his reply. He made sure I felt comfortable and my Son was doing ok. This really made me feel super content. He always replied back to his email. Very friendly And professional doctor. I recently did another sleep study with a different caretaker and learned I don't sever obstructive sleep apnea, or any trace of apnea to begin with. PAMF's sleep center in Dublin, located next to 580, yielded insufficient results. The bed was cumbersome, I was not instructed to wear loose fitting clothes to accommodate the many wires on my body, and the unbearable noise from the freeway kept me up. I wasted thousands of dollars chasing a diagnosis that I never had to begin with, because of Gersten and PAMF's poor care. Oh, and on top of that, because I was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea, I sought after and acquired a CPAP, which has been recently recalled due to causing carcinogenic effects. PAMF and Gersten forced a diagnosis on me which led to obtaining a medical device that wasn't going to solve the problem, and actually could have harmed me. read more

I had ear pain. He examined me for 2 minutes and he wanted to do surgery on my ear drum. I went to another doctor and he gave me a spray for allergy and my pain went away within a week. It's very disappointing the this dr. does not care about patients at all. Surgery on an ear drum with no issue would have been a huge mistake. read more

Poor client service. Dr. Gersten's office wrote an order for a new CPAP over one month ago but forgot to attach the sleep study report for the equipment vendor Apria Healthcare to act on the order. Apria (as well as my insurance) has been calling the doctor's office and leaving messages to obtain the report to help move this order. Unfortunately the doctor's office appears to be too busy to attend to this request. Now I have to escalate within the medical group and spend increasing amounts of my time in what should have been accomplished in a week. read more

I recently went for a consultation with Dr Keni Gersten and was charged an additional 470 for a procedure that I was not informed was outside the consultation and beyond my copay. see below: PR LARYNGOSCOPY FLEX DIAG - 31575 (CPT®) 470.00 I would have refused the procedure would I have been informed of this fee and I would have checked with my insurance first. Performing this procedure during a consultation without notifying me of the fee outside and beyond the consultation co-pay amounts to a practice similar to a scam. I was going to have my wife set up an appointment but after my experience, she will be going elsewhere. It's really too bad, because his staff is really wonderful. read more

We were referred to Dr. Gersten by my 4 year old's primary doctor at PAMF for her severe sleep apnea. He ended up performing an intracapsular tonsillectomy, as opposed to a traditional one, at our request. Even though he did not completely agree with our decision, citing a lack of scientific research, he was still very supportive and professional throughout the entire process. At both the first appointment and followup after surgery, he was very friendly and playful with an understandably apprehensive child. He's more scientific and matter of fact with parents, which may be why a reviewer said he felt distant and cold, but I thought it was good that he was being straight forward. If you're prepared with questions, he will take the time to answer all of them, although he refuses to speculate if you ask for his opinion. In terms of my child's recovery, she was miserable for the first two days; in pain and grumpy but better for the next three; by days 6 and 7 she only complained of a sore throat and didn't ask for medication anymore. I would say that all of her negative symptoms were gone by day 10. Her nighttime breathing got worse before getting better, and now after 2 weeks she's like a ninja at night, which initially was very disconcerting but of course we are thrilled with the results. By Dr. Gersten's own count, he has performed over a thousand of these surgeries, so if your child needs one I'd say you're in good hands. Our experience was a positive one. read more

An orthodontist referred me to Dr. Gersten because he thought I might have sleep apnea. I was very surprised since I had no symptoms of sleep apnea. After several months of waiting, I finally met with Dr. Gersten. Even though I had no symptoms, he told me that I needed a $4,000 sleep study because I was at an increased risk of a stroke or heart attack due to probable sleep apnea. This news terrified me. I showed up for my sleep study last Monday at 9 pm. I had no idea what to expect since they sent me no information. Within minutes, I was being hooked up to many wires and having my dead covered in gel and sensors. I told the technician that I suffered from claustrophobia and was concerned about being confined to a bed and locked into a dark box with no light. She told me that I could have had taken a sleep aid. Her colleague told me a few days earlier that I couldn't take caffeine or prescription medicine the day of my sleep study. I laid in bed anxious for hours. Finally, I called the technician and told her I wanted to go home. She told me that I would be charged for the visit if I left and strongly suggested I keep trying. I finally fell asleep for 90 minutes and then 30 minutes. At 2 am, the technician came in, told me I had sleep apnea, hooked me up to a CPAP and left. I was shocked by this news and laid there until 5 am. At 5 am, I called the technician and told her I was leaving. I normally sleep 8 hours at night. I slept less than 3 during the study. Six days later while eating Sunday dinner, I received a CPAP machine prescription from Dr. Gersten for 99 months of a machine. My wife was devastated by this news. This was very concerning since my report hasn't been prepared and I haven't had a follow-up to discuss my results with Gersten. I called the office to discuss my concerns. After a week of waiting for the manager to call me back, I finally reached him. Nobody at the sleep foundation that I have encountered has been professional or treated me with respect. Worst of all, my general practitioner says the sleep study probably isn't accurate since I barely slept and had an anxiety attack during the study. Avoid getting a sleep study with Gersten until they make dramatic improvements to their quality of care. read more

Consulted with Dr Gersten as one of the few sleep specialists in the area. Usually booked out for a month, but had a new clinic day open up recently so managed to squeeze in on short notice. Found Gersten very condescending and altogether unprofessional. Despite being seen as a new patient, he entered the room and barely made eye contact or uttered a word before sitting down at the computer. Continued staring at the monitor and started typing away. Even while asking about symptoms, he did so without nary a glance at the patient, as if we were not worthy of his time. Spoke in a rehearsed and monotone voice that in no way suggested empathy, seated at the far end of the room, a good 6-8 feet away from the patient. Lectured away about behavioral changes for the majority of the appointment as if reading off a book with no regard for patient comprehension. Whenever we tried to ask a question, Gersten would either make a face out of annoyance or respond with the same monotonous and condescending tone "everyone is different, everyone functions differently" without really addressing our concerns. Then he'd ask "any more questions?" After a few more useless responses, we essentially gave up. Very disappointing experience and our last consult with this "doctor" who's completely devoid of social interaction skills. read more

Doctor Gersten did Surgery on my Husbands Nose when he was suffering from chronic rhinitis. Since the surgery my husband has become a new man. BEWARE of a consultation for Sleep Apnea!! Dr. Gersten performed a nasal endoscopy (camera down my throat) during my consultation at the Dublin location and did not warn me it would be a separate charge. I received a bill for almost $500 just for that procedure!! The procedure took maybe a minute in length. I have good insurance and have never been charged more than co-pays. Sutter refused to adjust my bill. It's an outrageous charge for a consultation appointment just to determine if I could continue with an actual sleep apnea appointment. I warn everyone to REFUSE the nasal endoscopy procedure unless you know 100% that your insurance covers it. I have good insurance and it didn't cover any of it. I ended up switching to Kaiser due to this bill and when I saw a new sleep apnea doctor they were able to see down my throat without the need of an nasal endoscopy. REFUSE the nasal endoscopy. They are just trying to steal your money!! read more

Truly the best! I am very lucky to call him my doctor. His superior surgical skills are equally matched by his compassion, honesty and empathy. This rare pairing of bedside manner and medical skill complemented by wit and charm make him one-of-a-kind! I had some of the most painful ENT surgery as an adult. My husband and I both have seen Dr. Gersten as patients. Dr. Gersten has helped me with my troubled ears and hearing loss. Most importantly, however, was my husband's severe sleep apnea. Dr Gersten ordered a sleep test on my husband. After going over the results of the test and my husbands lack of tolerance for the C-Pap machine, Dr. Gersten recommended surgery. Dr Gersten was absolutely amazing... I had been sick with tonsillitis for a full year with a chronic infection that required a tonsillectomy. After 7 courses of antibiotics I was referred to Dr Gersten and he worked with me to make the best decision for my health. There was no pushing the surgery it was totally my decision and all the risks and expectations were set extremely clearly. The tonsillectomy was performed perfectly leaving no unexpected consequences and Dr Gersten was promptly on time for all appointments before and after the surgery, as well as responsive to any of my questions during recovery. I couldn't have asked for a better person to perform such a delicate operation. read more

I went to see Dr. Gersten about some tooth pain that I was having, which I thought was sinus related. I called and left a message about scheduling an appointment; they contacted me back promptly and I was able to get an appointment on the same day. Dr. Gersten is part of Palo Alto Medical Foundation, which in my experience is a very professional organization - I had been a patient before with another doctor, and they had all of my information available so that the scheduling and registration was very easy. Dr. Gersten did a very thorough examination and gave me multiple options for treatment, which he explained very clearly. Rather than simply helping to relieve my symptoms, he wanted to make sure that he addressed the root of the problem, and so he ordered a CT scan of my sinuses after prescribing some antibiotics to treat my infection. I was able to get the CT scan done right away after a short walk to another building; they sent Dr. Gersten the results, and by the end of the day I received a phone call from his office informing me of his diagnosis. Since the problem turned out to be tooth-related, they also gave me a recommendation for an oral surgeon, whom I was able to see the next day. I also received a very nice follow-up letter from Dr. Gersten's office, providing me with contact information in case I had any further questions. Altogether it was a very positive experience; I have been dealing with these tooth/sinus issues for several years, and Dr. Gersten is the first doctor that I have seen who took the time to really try to uncover the root of the problem; I am already feeling much better and have followed up on his recommendations for treatment. read more
