The Papa Joe (Manager's Special)
Ray V.

All I kept hearing about in Texas was ya gotta try a Jason's Deli. My buds in the Ft. Worth/Dallas area absolutely rave about this place. Now... myself being a Sammich fiend, knew this day was inevitable. Well, slap my chaps three times and lasso me a Sammy! I was excited to find out that we had our own Jason's in our neck of the woods. Like I said... this day was gonna happen. First off, this place offers a variety of sandwiches but they also have various salads and soups. My wife ordered the Rueben (I gotta admit- I was kinda jelly once I seen hers) with a side of tater chips, my father in law had a Grilled Cheese Sammy w/ a cup of their Chicken Noodle Soup, while my mom had a Roasted Turkey with Tomato & Lettuce and a side of their Mac & Cheese. I was talked into trying the Papa Joe Special Sammich and a side of chips (I was told this was a secret menu item). My sandwich was mighty tasty and filling, but like I said... I was side eyeing my wife's Rueben. I know for a fact I will be ordering that one next time. Loaded with pastrami and that sauerkraut goodness... damn. But it was all good... the Mac looked a little on the runny side, but I'll have to sample that some other time. Regardless, we all enjoyed our Sammies. What's even better is that they offer free ice cream cones and makes for a nice treat afterwards. Unless, you're one of them Uber cool parents who let kids eat dessert first . Anywho... my bud's recommendation did not steer us wrong, and totally recommend you give this place a try. As always, Enjoy & Be a Happy Sammich!

It my first time here, but my first review. I really appreciate a good sandwich, definitely get a good one here, and more. Salads, soups, variety sandwiches that should meet anyone's taste. This visit I had the Rueben sand with a side of chips, my dad had a simple grilled cheese sandwich with a cup of chicken noodle soup, my mother in law had a roasted turkey, tomato, lettuce sandwich with a side of chips and mac n' cheese, and my hubby had a papa-Joe special sandwich (not on the menu) with a side of chips. When my hubby ordered his sandwich, I thought "that is my kind of sandwich", but I really wanted the Rueben, loaded with pastrami and sauerkraut, oh yummy! We all loved our sandwiches. When you are finished with your sandwiches there is free ice cream cones for a good treat (or take lunch to go and start with dessert ).

Love Jasons's. Best salad bar in town, such a great selection. Get the seafood gumbo if you want to add some spice.

What a place FRESH is. I never understood how great a place like FRESH is until going to other…read moregroceries more frequently. They have everything going on here. For starters, there is a Starbucks and a Walgreens pharmacy attached, which seems pretty typical for a grocery store, but then you see they have a gelato shop, a pizzeria, a grill with a patio, a taqueria, and more. Their huge patio space makes it a place that people of Tyler love coming to and eating at. This is like a Whole Foods for Tyler. The options and selections were a lot more vast than I had ever seen. I'm seeing fruit and produce I've never seen before. They have so much wine and beer to choose from. Their bakery has so many insane options. FRESH even has a full playground next door and live music on their patio. It's honestly a really impressive shop. One of the only downsides of FRESH is that you're going to pay that price tag. Everything is always slightly more than elsewhere in town. Its quality is what makes it worth the visit. It feels like one of a kind as a grocery store, which is why it took 10-plus years to open a second location. It's not only a grocery store, it's part of the Tyler community. The food: I ordered a McAlister's Club sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. The sandwich was good, but nothing exceptional. Im not sure how it was a 'club' sandwich except that it had 2 pieces of bacon on it. A little overpriced for such a small sandwich, but it was fine and had good quality ingredients. The Mac and cheese was really good - nice and creamy and steaming hot. My hub ordered the 6" beef dip sandwich (so, half of a sandwich) with potato salad on the side. Both were good, but again, a little pricy for the quantity. I mean, almost $40 for two sandwiches with a side and 2 drinks...we could have gone to a full service restaurant for that price. Otherwise, everything was good. 3 stars for great service and decent but skimpy food. -2 stars for price.

My wife left a good part of her turkey melt on the plate Plus the parking lot is poorly laid out, poorly maintained. In a word: Crummy PS: Today we went to FDs, had two entrees: grilled shrimp and fried shrimp. Sat at a nice table in a nice restaurant, had an excellent waiter. So seafood, baked potatoes, fresh vegetables served hot from the kitchen for $29.12 -- only 28 cents more, than the two crummy sandwiches, for a tasty healthy full meal.

Convenience stores are typically a treasure trove for low rent demographics- you know, those that spend their entire disposable income on quick "to go" comfort items, such as: 22 oz. Dr. Pepper bottles, cigarettes, chew, bags of chips, and candy. Oh wait, don't forget the lottery tickets, and scratch offs, as well. For me, I generally only stop at joints like these to fill up my tank. I don't buy candy, lottery tickets, or other items of waste, unless it's beer, or wine. With this said, Hillbilly Hangout is a great store to stop in for a quick sixer, or bottle of vino. Seriously, who the hell would ever imagine that a gas station, in Flint, Texas, of all places, would have such an impressive selection of beer, and wine. It almost doubles as a second store. Colorful patrons, friendly employees, and a damn good spot to pick of a six pack of Porter, or a IPA. For that, Hillbilly Hangout gets 4 stars.
