Wow Wow Wow!!! All I've got to say that this is worth the drive!! I would drive an hour all day if I could. Loved the idea of sit down diner with an expansive coffee menu. Loved it!! Got cinnamon sugar jacks--which are not pancakes....come on down to find out what they are ( or look it up I don't really mean to have you drive there to ask a question thanks!!!) but man are they good!!! Quite the hidden gem in this neck of the woods! Their coffee flights looked amazing, but the dreary weather made me want their Chai tea. The Chai was excellent and made me feel like a warm cozy sweater had enveloped me. The food was equally enjoyable and generous portions! Service was prompt and we were checked in multiple times to ensure we had everything we needed and that the food was good, which it was! THE TREASURE OF TAPPAHANNOCK If you have ever been to Tappahannock you should know about Java Jacks. It's truly the town's treasure. The owners, and their staff are truly the sweetest, kindest people ever. The food and the service are FANTASTIC!!! The ambiance and decor is so quaint. I just feel happy walking in the door. I absolutely love their delicious coffees. Their coffee "flights" are always so creative and delicious. It's the perfect place for breakfast, brunch, and lunch with family and friends, coworkers, or even a date. Everyone loves their "Jack's" they are so light, fluffy, sweet, and delicious. My personal favorite is the Eggs Chesapeake. They have the absolute best crab and their hollandaise sauce is great!!! If you haven't been to Java Jack's you are truly missing a town treasure. My first impression as we walked into this house-restaurant was that this is a cute little coffee shop/lunch place with friendly staff ready to assist you with any questions or concerns. I wanted to stay for lunch; however, since we only had a few minutes to spare we grabbed coffee and split. After looking at the menu as well as seeing all the people that crowded the restaurant, it appeared to be a place worthy of enjoying an afternoon meal. If given the time, we'd stayed and tasted the local flavor. Now, onto the coffee. They have all the major flavors. We ordered two lattes, with extra shots. Both my wife's and my latte came out tasting very delicious, even with the extra shots (no bitterness). For two large lattes with extra shots we paid $15, comparable to Starbucks in price and taste. Additionally, from what I hear, they have coffee flights that are truly worth the money. Overall, not a bad little place. Gravy tasted like it was out of a can. My daughter's sausage and eggs were cold when served. Biscuits weren't good and seemed reheated rather than made fresh. The chicken fried steak didn't have any seasoning. The pancakes were ok. Service was ok. Before I tasted the gravy I asked for a little more as there wasn't much on my steak. Wife and I are in town for our anniversary and we love trying local coffee shops and cafe's. Let me tell you, this place has THE BEST PANCAKES I've had in years. It was soft, fluffy, tasted so good you didn't even need syrup.....but I put it on anyways with butter and it was phenomenal! I got the #5 Virginia Street Special which came with the 3 DELICIOUS pancakes, 2 strips of bacon, eggs, and I added hash browns to it. All of it was really good, even the bacon even though it's crispy (I like my bacon to be more on the chewy side) Service was also awesome. Our lady made sure we were all set every step of the way, topped off our drinks before we finished, and was so friendly as well! You don't see that too much in northern Virginia. Shabby chic dècor with different vintage tablecloths at each table make this coffee house a cozy respite for breakfast, lunch, brunch or a quick java jolt! I loved every detailed room! Even the restrooms had a vintage vibe! The ambiance warms you right up along with your hot Cuppa joe! I ordered the London Fog tea, Earl Grey and steamed milk which was truly unique and yummy. I had the fluffy, thick pancakes, scrambled eggs, country ham and grits. It was a hearty meal! I wasn't crazy about the grits, but the rest of the food was good! My table mates got the sausage gravy and biscuits (which looked sloppy but was tasty!) and the breakfast burrito (which she said was done perfectly, not too much onion and plenty of filling!) Food is on point! As taken as I was with the atmosphere and food, the service was a little slow... our server seemed a bit distracted, has us move to another table, and was a tad flighty. We were there for breakfast last Sunday (5/4/2025). We arrived at about 1135am and received our food at 1:50pm. We waited quite a while for a server but it was ok as we weren't in a big hurry. We got our drinks and that was it. No refills offered. No updates on when food would be out. I finally located the server and asked and i got an eye roll and a smart answer. We decided to just go ahead and pay for drinks and leave, but then the food came out. It wasn't hot. Just warm. We spent our sunday afternoon there. So very disappointing . read more

Been having the chicken winter salad the last 3 or 4 visits, but decided that we have been eating a lot of chicken lately and we both went for the oyster salad instead. Alas the oysters were gone for the day. When offered a shrimp winter salad. We both smiled. Seven grilled shrimp topping a spinach salad with poppy seed dressing. Delicious. Really cute house converted into a breakfast place. We loved our food and literally the largest latte you've ever seen (I do wish the server would have told us that in general). The service is good, but as you can expect in a smaller place - the food does take a while to come out. We got there around 11AM on Sunday and did get seated quickly which was nice, but the wait on the food was about 20 mins or so. May 24. My food was excellent! Fresh fried local oysters were outstanding. Ditto the fried zucchini chips. Wife's chicken salad sandwich okay. Excellent slaw. The value/prices were exceptional. The service was atrocious. Very nice but SLOW. Glacial. I stopped counting at 45 minutes. We were there late lunch and waited and waited and waited. And this was as the restaurant was clearing out. The cook could not have had competing orders to explain the delay. If not for the wait, Java Jack's would rate 4.5 stars. Ambience: cute. Bathroom clean. Unfortunately, we were seated near boorishly loud and obnoxious "horse people" lorded over by a blowhard in a white button down- but that's not the restaurant's fault. Unfortunately upon reflection I feel I was deeply discriminated against in this establishment. I arrived with high hopes and anticipation for their beautiful coffee flight and crab eggs Benedict. Upon my entrance I was not spoken to for close to five minutes and had to approach the lady behind the counter, she let me know it would be a while and did not offer much more information. I replied that is ok could I put my name down for the wait, (she then gave me an approx 30 min) she took down my number and I headed to my car to wait. The establishment is on the smaller side and I had zero issues waiting. However when I returned inside after the wait time given, it was clear everyone who had arrived after me had been seated, and my number had been scribbled out though I was never called. Regardless I chocked it up to an innocent accident, sadly more "events" ensued. Once seated I ordered the coffee flight and a water before continuing to look over the menu. When the server returned with the flight close to 20 minutes later she placed it down so forcefully it almost spilled. No apologies made. I placed my order and after around 30 minutes she returned and said they were unable to make the eggs Benedict. After that wait you can imagine I was curious to know why to which she replied they didn't have hollandaise sauce and could not make any more. That itself was a particularly interesting comment as it is a 5/6 ingredient sauce. Eggs, lemon juice, butter, mustard, hot sauce/vinegar, how they operate as a predominately breakfast establishment without these commonplace ingredients is truly astonishing. Alas, I had waited so long already I placed an order for quiche it arrived in less then 10 minutes, lukewarm, flavorless, and with a stale crust. At this point I had to request silverware. And the check which was the item I received most promptly in my visit. I don't recommend the quiche, nor the service. I most definitely will not be returning and am deeply saddened by the events that took place and attitude of those I encountered. As a first generation American and self proclaimed foodie all I can do is hope my post gives way to some reflection on the owners/employees behalf at Java Jacks. read more

This is a super cute little coffee shop that is in an old house. It has nice seating indoors and outside. The service was prompt and pleasant for my carry out order. My chai latte tasted like it's made from powder mix; I had it iced and it was good. I also had the chicken salad croissant and this is why I gave my review a 4. It was good, but different than I'm used to. The portion was good and the warm croissant delicious, but the consistency of the chicken salad was different than I'm used to. It was creamy and the chicken was very finely stirred in; I wish there were more celery or fruit in it. The sweet potato fries were good once I added some salt to them. We go a few times a week for breakfast or lunch. I enjoy the building itself, an old old cottage with funny crooked floors. The servers are wonderful and will constantly check on you. My favorite breakfast sandwich is their BEC Croissant, YUM MEE!! A terrific price too. Coffee is good, everything they serve is great! Try to get a table on the "front porch" , which is enclosed but you can watch the world of Tappahannock go by the windows. If you have never eaten there, you will enjoy all of it. read more

I treated myself to a nice breakfast out this morning and picked Java Jacks sort of at random. Now I'm looking forward to becoming a regular customer! The space itself is very cute. It's in what looks like an old house, with seating spread through several smaller rooms rather than one open dining space. I chose a seat in one of the rooms with windows. The decor is also very cute and homey. My server was new and until she told me that, I wouldn't have known. She was attentive and friendly. The food came out quickly. I ordered an eggs Benedict dish with crab meat and a side of bacon. The crab Benedict was amazing, exactly what I was in the mood for. The crab was fresh, the eggs perfectly poached, the right amount of Hollandaise. The bacon was delicious. I only had an iced tea but the menu features a number of coffee drinks that look amazing, and also some sort of frozen or iced hot chocolate that I need to try. Also need to note the super cute bathroom! Lots of attention to detail in this restaurant to make you feel welcome and cozy. I will be back! read more

I went in about 2:00pm and ordered a take out sandwich. The cashier told me I could wait in the car and someone would bring my order out when it was ready. I didn't ask, she volunteered. I ordered, paid and asked that the sandwich be cut in half. She assured me that was not a problem. I waited about 30 minutes in 900° temperatures for someone to bring my order out. About 30 minutes later, I went back in to see what was taking so long. There was a different cashier. The sandwich was made and just sitting on a cart. I told the cashier that I was told the sandwich would be brought out to the car. Her dumb response was, Who told you that?" It didn't take a genius to figure out that the previous cashier who was taking orders told me. I got my sandwich, which had NOT been cut in half as requested and went back to my car. I'm sure, if the sandwich and sweet potato fries had not been nearly cold, it would have been very good and deserved a five star rating. The cook should be furious at such poor service after the cook's hard work. Not sure I'd ever choose this restaurant again. A great homey place for breakfast! The atmosphere is small town comfortable with friendly service and good food! Their pancakes are a treat being hot and fresh and mine with blueberries were excellent, eggs cooked correctly, tasty bacon, hot oatmeal with granola and raisins and honey making it special.
