Decided to stop here for a quick lunch, and we were quite hungry. Walked in the restaurant, which seemed sort of chaotic, as there was no one to greet/seat us, so we finally decided to seat ourselves. Shortly after we sat, one employee came and cleaned our butter-laden table. The stench of the rag used to wipe the table was stomach turning, and the smell lingered throughout our stay. After several minutes, another employee approached the table and asked what we wanted to drink, then walked off to fill our glasses. Then, another came to us with menus, then said she'd be back and walked off. A while later, the first employee came back with our drinks and said she'd be back. Almost fifteen minutes went buy and yet another employee came over to take our orders and asked what we were drinking. We placed our orders and then NOTHING. For over half an hour, we sat nursing our water and soda...after forty-some minutes, one of the employees said in passing it shouldn't be much longer for our order to be up. After another five minutes, we got our food. In their defense, there were two larger groups in the restaurant, but geez, the place wasn't THAT crowded. The food: standard fare, fried seafood, sandwiches,...it was OK, but the portions were huge. The pricing: pretty average, about $12-15/pp. The atmosphere: bleh. Outdated, sparse bathrooms, and the nasty smelling wash cloths......I don't want to think what the kitchen is like... The service: chaos. Nice employees, some were friendly, some acted like they were forced labor. But man, we didn't know WHO to ask about anything, so we just kept to ourselves as the clock ticked into the afternoon.... Overall? We won't be back. Why? I can still smell that washcloth. ICK. read more

The best resturant in Urbana. Better seafood than the place down the street and a much more friendly. Service can be slow, but they don't have an attitude. It's just a genuine local rersturant with down home ambiance and reasonable prices. I travel from Charlottesville just to enjoy their soft shell crabs. read more

Mediocre is best word to describe Virginia Street Cafe. Service was sufficient but not friendly or attentive. I'm not asking for chitchat or to be coddled but a smile or "thank you" would have been appreciated. The interior felt familiar - like every mom and pop restaurant in 1982. The salad bar is more like a burger fixings bar than a salad bar. I ordered the popcorn shrimp platter which I think may have been Sea-Pak. My companion ordered the (mostly) soft-shell crab sandwich. The occasional crunchiness is a clue it was harvested a little late. I'm giving Virginia Street Cafe three stars because the tea was good, the hush puppies and Cole slaw were really good, and our order was taken and delivered quickly and accurately. read more

Very average at best. Locals love this place, probably because it's all they have for dining out. But the food left alot to be desired. How are grits nasty? Just open the box, add water and butter, boil. Service was great, probably because we dined with locals...lol. Ambiance is good. Definitely need to invest in better chairs. And trash ALL the flatware and buy NEW stuff. The forks look as old as the brick wall. read more

OK but disappointing. Ordered shrimp dinner advised by waitress to contain pound of shrimp. But received 15 extra large shrimp (half pound v. 16 oz. promised. Waitress later said that's our dinner size. Baked potatoes undercooked & hard & didn't eat. Unseasoned green beans straight out of a can, didn't eat. Key Lime pie frozen & didn't order. We went there on the 15th of March for my uncle (Moe) 98 birthday party and we couldn't have been more happy with this local Cafe. The staff was very upbeat, sociable, friendly and helpful and professional. They really took care of all of our needs and requests. Everyone really likes their food,drinks and service. I love eating at the Virginia Street Cafe. The food is always priced affordable and the portions are large for the amount of money that they charge. The menu has a great variety and the bread pudding is one of the best I've ever had. I love their breakfast. On the weekends they have a buffet and It's a extremely great value. Came on a Sunday around 7:00 because the place we wanted to go was closed. It was empty inside. We sat ourselves and were promptly waited on. I got the fried chicken, clam chowder, fries, and broccoli. The clam chowder was awful. Just plain disgusting. The fried chicken tasted okay but my plate was full of oil from the chicken, the fries were the highlight of the meal, and the broccoli was raw. My sister in law and I decided to eat at the cafe on July 29th. It did not even come close to being a good experience. Our waitress only had 3 tables of 2 guest at each table. It looked like the end of a lunch rush. Several tables were empty and being bussed. The other waitress had one 7 top and was bussing her other tables. Our waitress took our order and after bringing us our ice tea was disengaged. After 30 minutes a table that came in after us had their food. I motioned for her to come over and asked when our food might be ready as I notice the other table had their lunch. She told us she would check. She did not return with any information. I walked up to the counter where the other waitress seemed to be cashing out and said we'd like to pay for our iced tea and leave. Our waitress came around the corner and said it would be up soon. AT this point, having waited 45 minutes without follow up on her part, I was done. I was polite. I told her I'd managed as well as waited tables in the industry. Her lack of common courtesy to keep us informed was a deal breaker. If they had been in the weeds, I would have been more understanding but after 45 minutes with her not even checking on us unless we tracked her down was terrible service. I am sure she forgot to put in our order. I ordered a turkey club sandwich and I am guess they are out hunting the turkey. Very disappointed. The waitresses acted like it was our fault for a bad experience. The said they were busy earlier, but as I mentioned when we were there it was the downside of the rush. And on that note when I waited tables I wanted it to busy so I'd make more money!! read more

Happened through town when the soft shell crabs were in season and had an awesome fried soft shell sandwich. Not sure I'd recommend anything else here, certainly not the atmosphere! But my crab was pretty damn good and fried just right. If you're in the area and it's that time of year (when they're fresh), this place is inexpensive and worth a stop for lunch. read more

Not impressed, forgettable, horrible service, food was nothing special, sat too long waiting for menus...I got up and got menus to save time. Maybe for this area this is a good place, but it would not cut it in a metropolitan area! I felt dooped too... which left a bad taste in my mouth! Here is why...my coworker & I both ordered the crab cake sandwich ($8.95) and said we did not want fries or chips...I asked for a house salad. The waitress told my friend and I we could do "one trip to the salad bar for $1. additional instead of the sides"...so we thought that was a good deal...except when I went to pay the bill I expected to pay $20 and was charged $29! Quite a difference! The waitress said she explained it badly and just giggled. So her mistake cost me $9. hmmm...not good. Guess what...I won't be back and neither will my co-worker friend. I am stuck (as usual) between 3.5 and 4 stars, but I think our experience was certainly a B grade and 4 out of 5 is a B in my book. We went this evening, a Friday night at the cusp of summer season...first weekend in June. Urbanna was generally VERY quiet and when we got to the restaurant around 820, it almost looked closed. Still, we entered and the sign said to seat yourself...which usually worries me...but we did. Service was not rocket fast. That said, it wasn't worth dinging the experience, although I fear if they had been busy, things might not have gone as well. As for menu selection, it's pretty basic Chesapeake Bay-Northern Neck fare: seafood, mostly fried or broiled, sandwiches, and a good assortment of land-fare, but nothing that will make Unique Eats anytime soon. Prices are not super cheap, but reasonable. Given what we got, I would argue this up a notch...we got a lot of food for our dollar. Soft shell crabs are in season and we both love them. So, my wife got the duo of Soft Shells and Scallops and I got a Fried Seafood Platter. You get 3 sides (including soup) with each dinner as well as hush puppies. We both got their house recipe clam chowder; she ordered onion rings and steamed broccoli, I got cole slaw and potato. Soup: great, tasty, flavorful, simple, VA/NC chowder. No cream (not New England style) and no tomato (not Manhattan style) but a well seasoned clam broth with potatoes and clams. The clams are well chopped---could have been canned or frozen--but very tasty. And the soup was hot...this MATTERS!! Dinners took a bit to get out and no bread (bread is an excellent mitigating factor for slow-ish kitchen) but we were okay. Platters arrived together and everything was correct. My Fried Seafood Platter was priced at 19.95 and included 3 large shrimp, 2 large scallops, a sandwich-sized crabcake, 4 large oysters, and about a 6 oz piece of fried sea trout. I asked for the addition of a soft shell crab and for 3 bucks I got a nice medium sized crab on the plate, and two GOLF BALL sized hush puppies. Weak point: the fish was okay, but trout is what it is...this is cheap fish sandwich fish but fresh and not terrible. Maybe a tiny bit over fried. Strong points: Hush puppies are GREAT. Big and slightly sweet, with a hint of grated onion, nice chew, GREAT fry. Not greasy at all. Great. Softshell crab was terrific. Medium crab was fried perfectly and very meaty, very papery shell. Outstanding. Scallops were obviously not frozen and sweet...again, perfectly fried. The crabcake was better than I expected. Rarely do you get a huge jumbo lump crab cake with a seafood platter. But this was a VERY crabby crab cake...not a lot of filler. And, while fried, it was moist and tasty. The shrimp were simply and lightly floured, no batter. They were good, but maybe a hair undercooked...a little bit limp, but sweet and delicious. The oysters were good and very crisp...but crunchy in a very good way. It was a FRIED SEAFOOD PLATTER. I have had many but also eaten at some of the best seafood restaurants in the world. It was definitely better than most platters. And very filling. PS Their slaw is excellent... The scallops and soft shells on wifey's plate were also VERY good. Service was attentive and refills came twice during the meal. There is a full bar but don't expect flights of small batch bourbon or craft beers. Domestics and a few imports like Heineken and Corona and enough on the bar to make most cocktails. We did not drink tonight. Pepsi and not Coke (bleh) The bill was 50 bucks. The platters were 23 and 20 respectively. The value was in the soup, puppies and two additional sides... I would go again and hope they stick around. read more

Virginia Street Cafe is an Urbanna staple. Having grown up in the area, I saw many a restaurant come and go. None have lasted the 30+(?) years that this hometown favorite has withstood. Even now, amidst the dynamic food scene that's burst in Richmond in the 15 years since I've been here, I still think about Virginia Street's unique clam chowder (Hatteras style!), BBQ sandwich, bread pudding and grilled chicken and club sandwiches - don't ask me how the final two can be so memorable, they just are! Virginia Street Cafe is a family owned, operated and loved restaurant. As kids, we all worked there and were treated like we belonged, just like Judy and Ray (mother and son) do with everyone. Come in on a Sunday morning for the breakfast buffet and you're sure to see more of the family scattered throughout the restaurant or at one big table dining together. The Wades welcome the families of their staff as well; in a town where everyone knows everyone, you're still almost guaranteed to be sitting next to a (true) member of the family in this super cozy hometown favorite! read more

Only reason we went there was because the restaurant we went there for was closed. Walked in and sat down to a dirty table. Waitress came over and gave us a menu and took a drink order. we ordered our food and waited, and waited, and waited. Finally the food came and who would have guessed that it was not what i ordered. My wife got trout which she said was ok but her fries were under done. I ordered a Ham and Cheese club sandwich and she brought over a ham and cheese sub instead. She took it back and came back with the same sub but had added bacon and tomato to it. Now the fries were cold and still did not have what i ordered. a waitress came by who was not ours and asked if everything was good and was told it was not what i ordered, she did not care. We never saw our waitress again and another waitress working there slapped the check on the table and walked away. had to go to register to pay and had to ask for my card back because the waitress was too busy worrying about finding wine for another table. needless to say there was no tip. would drive way out of my way to avoid settling for eating here again. Feel totally ripped off by the quality, portion size and extremely poor service. Arrived here in the afternoon looking for some fresh oysters and soft shell crabs...they ran out of crabs at lunch...they shuck the oysters down the street and serve them on lettuce..are you kidding me!!! I ordered the salmon dinner..sslmonwas not fresh.. frozen..potato was cold..friend ordered crab cake dinner..potato was cold also. The Cafe is a bit dated, but we weren't looking for anything fancy or special. Our server was prompt and we didn't have any problems (that seemed to be a big issue with the other reviewers...maybe we got lucky!). I had the softshell crab platter and hubby had popcorn shrimp. Virginia St. Cafe is your typical rural VA / NNK "comfort food" type of cafe. Nestled right in the heart of Urbanna, it dishes out traditional southern comfort food fare in an unassuming but quaint atmosphere. Unlike many of the restaurants in and around Urbanna, Virginia St. Cafe seems to cater more to the locals than the touristy crowds in Urbanna. My family and I ate there twice during our recent visit to Urbanna - both times for breakfast. On Sunday, we came in at about 11:30AM and there was a decent crowd which grew as the typical "after church" brunch crowd hit the restaurant. They offered a breakfast buffet that looked rather limited, so we all stuck with their traditional breakfast menu. It's the usual breakfast fare - sausage, bacon, eggs, pancakes, etc. - with some typical southern options like Virginia ham and grits ... both of which were tested and approved. Everything we had over both days was good ... eggs were requested a variety of ways over both days and cooked properly, toast and grits were good, all breakfast meats were good, although the bacon was the weakest "link". Coffee was the usual breakfast house mud, and service was the typical sterile, efficient, but slightly rushed treatment from places like this. It was good both times, although Monday we were their only customer for a while, and it took a minute for someone to recognize that we had walked in. Again, we only had breakfast there, so that's all that I can rate. And the breakfast was good, served quickly, and was reasonably priced. Food is decent but not worth what they charge. However,Their cheese steak sub is always a disappointment. Their hush puppies and onion rings are always good though. The staff is always friendly. And we always enjoy ourselves. I do like a restaurant where we can talk without feeling like we have to shout over the music.but it is not my favorite place to eat. read more

Love this place! It's not fancy, but the food is GOOD and reliable! The crab soup and crab au gratin are excellent. I love the breakfast buffet on Saturdays and Sundays and always take company when they come to town. Very reasonable prices!! The "Combo Club" sandwich is my favorite for lunch; it is equal to the old Miller & Rhoads Tea Room (in Richmond) club sandwich, if you're old enough to remember that. A good place for a tasty lunch...nothing fancy....just good food at reasonable prices. A lot of locals eat here which is usually a good sign. I have tried the fish sandwich and the cheeseburger both of which were tasty and on fresh rolls which is half of the battle for a good sandwich. The staff is friendly and attentive which makes for a pleasant experience. The soups seem to be popular so I will try some next time. read more
