    Popcorn shrimp platter
    Lisa C.

Mediocre is best word to describe Virginia Street Cafe. Service was sufficient but not friendly or attentive. I'm not asking for chitchat or to be coddled but a smile or "thank you" would have been appreciated. The interior felt familiar - like every mom and pop restaurant in 1982. The salad bar is more like a burger fixings bar than a salad bar. I ordered the popcorn shrimp platter which I think may have been Sea-Pak. My companion ordered the (mostly) soft-shell crab sandwich. The occasional crunchiness is a clue it was harvested a little late. I'm giving Virginia Street Cafe three stars because the tea was good, the hush puppies and Cole slaw were really good, and our order was taken and delivered quickly and accurately.

Ok, it's really off season. I had the oyster po boy sandwich. Very plain, no spices. I'll have to try again sometime

We all agreed that we did not want to stop for fast food, which is all we kept seeing along the way. A road service sign led us to this restaurant and we couldnt be more thankful. Coming from NY, we rarely, if ever get authentic soul food, and were not going to pass up on this chance. Located in an unassuming strip mall, Kendall's Kountry Kitchen was a 40 seat adorable restaurant. When we arrived there was a large family party, but the rest of the restaurant was quite empty. After being seated right away, we saw as the restaurant slowly began to fill up. By the time we left, the enture place was full. Our waitress Jemiah (sorry if I am spelling that wrong) was so sweet and welcoming. Our orders for drinks and food were taken right after she introduced herself. We ordered 2 of the fried chicken meals and one pork chop dinner. Each came with two sides and cornbread. We all shared the sides and were able to all try the mashed potatoes, baked apples, collard greens (we got two orders-they were out of fried okra) macaroni and cheese and the corn pudding. All amazing! Our mains were all cooked to perfection, served piping hot and tasted great. The waitress explained that all meals were cooked to order and to expect about a 20 minute wait. (Just something to remember if you are in a rush). Thankfully we had plenty of time and must agree that this is a meal that should be savored and given a generous amount of time to consume. We left nothing on our plates! I also ordered a bread pudding to take home (stuffed from the meal) and enjoyed it on my way home. The food, hospitality and general vibe of this place was refreshing and not something we come across often living up north. We plan to make this an annual stop (to and from) our beach vacations.

Southern home cooking but no chicken livers, asked for fried catfish and was denied, asked for fried trout and again was turned down. Ty said whiting was available which I'm not a big fan of but ordered it. It came out nice & hot but she didn't offer any cocktail sauce nor tartar sauce. Mildly seasoned breading, nothing spectacular. My dinner party ordered pork chops and cheeseburger, both mediocre. Ty waited on the next table over and she didn't deny them catfish and gave them a choice of cocktail or tartar. When we asked for a refill, again she said they're out.... I normally don't like to pull a race card but I found it offensive she was more agreeable to the table with black patrons... 2 stars for service & atmosphere, 3 for food

In a time when genuine customer service can be hard to find, this business went above and beyond in a way that truly impressed me. The owner was kind, and personally invested in making sure customers have a great experience. As a Black woman-owned business, she exemplifies excellence, integrity, and hospitality. It is clear that customer satisfaction is part of the culture of this establishment. I will definitely return and gladly recommend this restaurant to family, friends, and anyone looking to support a business that truly values its customers.

Where is the James Beard Foundation?…read more From the minute you set foot inside, it feels like you're coming home. From start to finish *everyone* fusses over you. Most of their business is take away, but you can and really should eat in at least once. Nothing about this place is stuffy. This is soul food at it's absolute best. The depth of flavour is extraordinary. If you are looking for horrible greasy stuff that masquerades as soul food, you will be sorely disappointed. There is love in every serving. I've been lucky enough to try the whole snapper. It was only $40 for a fish that was easily big enough to feed 3 people, and I am not small! This fish had zero chance of fitting in the to go container. Its head and tail were flopping all over the place. Much more importantly it was incredible. The stew was fantastically deep. The root vegetables were soft but not over cooked. It is served head on, bones in, like it should be. The fried version is not greasy and the batter stays in place. Have I mentioned the collards? The pot liquor. OM NOM NOM. These folks will have you asking for seconds on vegetables. The first time I had their mac and cheese, it was good. Tonight's was off the chain. If you want a bigger portion of this, you are clearly a monster. They seem to have gone cake rather than cobbler, and it does not disappoint. We were in on Juneteenth, too. It was obvious then that we would come back, and it was hands down the right decision. If they are out of something, it is not unusual. That is because it is THAT FREAKING GOOD. This is food you could happily stand in line for in the heat for several hours. It takes as long as it takes, but on neither visit did it take too long at all. The car park is ample, which is a relief. They have both steps and a ramp. There is a tiny bit of a rough transition to get inside, but it shouldn't be a nightmare for folks with a mobility impairment. There is more than sufficient distance between tables so that everyone can be seated comfortably. It is immaculate in terms of cleanliness. Nicer than that is none of the staff attempt to clean while customers are enjoying their meals. Most single people will find the side orders more than sufficient. Overall, this is easily five stars. I felt guilty reviewing Rainey's since I don't want a stampede of out of towners heading for their door. But in truth, it's a destination restaurant. Support these folks they deserve it!

The atmosphere here is quite different from the Myrtle Beach location. Instead of a beachy vibe, it has more of a colonial feel that fits Williamsburg perfectly. We were seated at a cozy table for two near the fireplace, which made for a warm, relaxing atmosphere. As for the food--exactly what we'd hoped for. The crab legs kept coming, the peel-and-eat shrimp were plentiful, and everything we tried was fresh and delicious. If you're going for seafood, you'll leave happy. We arrived right when they opened, which turned out to be a great decision. The restaurant was calm and uncrowded when we sat down, but by the time we finished eating, there was a line and the place was absolutely packed. If you're in Williamsburg and craving seafood, I highly recommend Captain George's. Just do yourself a favor and go early--you'll beat the crowds and enjoy the experience even more.

You have a choice of AYCE buffet from four long tables with a variety of selections for $51.99 or you can also choose an entree with two sides for $36.99. The table had a split decision, some chose the buffet and some chose the entree which is perfectly fine. I chose the fried jumbo shrimp with green beans and baked potato. Those fried jumbo shrimp were tender, crispy and delicious. The two sides chosen were perfectly prepared. The service provided by our server Ceci was immaculate. She very friendly, humorous, attentive and knowledgeable. Even another server named Doug who occasionally check on us too. All staff had great teamwork, friendly and communication very well. The dining area is clean, has a full bar, plenty of seatings, and a water feature outside for photo ops. The decor is much better and very spacious too than the Outer Banks one. I would make another visit whenever I am in the area again.
