Nice place. It's cozy and inviting. I love the JL Scott photos of Keokuk on the walls. They've got more drink options than you could ever dream up, although I haven't had any. I would've really liked to see a veggie wrap on the menu, but I settled for the BLT with guacamole and it was pretty good. Didn't have to wait long for the food to come out either. We enjoyed coming to Java River Cafe today for lunch! Great neighborhood cafe with friendly staff and comfort food. I got the turkey, bacon and cheddar sandwich on sourdough and added all the fixins, and my hubby got the ribeye sandwich. I also got a flat white which was very good. The espresso shots were smooth and the steamed milk kept my drink nice and hot. Thanks Christina! Service was fast and friendly and the cafe is kept nice and clean. One of our favorite local places. For breakfast my go-to is the omelette and I always indulge in one of their delicious pastries (if you are lucky enough to get a blueberry cinnamon - you won't be disappointed. Best cinnamon roll of my life ). For lunch I can decide if I like the Best Grilled Cheese or the Jalapeño Popper grilled cheese better. Both are amazing! When you walk in you're greeted with a beautiful smile and a big hello. It is a cafeteria type dining. They bring it to you though. My hubs and I ordered the blueberry sandwich and the quiche. Ever since Covid my taste buds have been off, so it's hard for me to judge quality. I can only taste sweet, salty, tangy and spicy. Everything else about this place is fantastic, which is why I gave it five stars. I love the ambience! I love the friendly people! I love that the owner came and greeted us and saw that we were taken care of and asked if we enjoyed our meal. I love that the bathroom was even welcoming, well lit, and CLEAN I also love that the portions were a nice change of pace. I hate to waste food so I'm glad that they were smaller than traditional restaurants. We all need to eat less!!! Each waitress that walked by us made sure that we were taken care of as well. I'm looking forward to our stay here in Fort Madison for three months because I will definitely be coming back to try some of those delectable pastries. Ok so first off, I am an avid coffee drinker. I have tried many different brands and brews, from many different coffee shops. I do a lot of driving for work, and my wife and I enjoy traveling, so we get to try coffee from all over the place. A lot in Los Angeles and the rest of Southern California. My wife and I were in Keokuk for a week visiting family in December 2019. We were told about Java River Coffee House and decided to give it a shot. Well, we absolutely loved it! Starting from the moment we walked in the door. It's located in a flower shop called Willow Tree Flowers and Gifts which is a nice little gift shop that has a whole bunch of cool stuff. Once you go through the gift shop you get to Java River Coffee house. They have all kinds of goodies that they make fresh daily, the staff is great, and the coffee is absolutely delicious! We tried a few different pastries and cheesecakes, as well as the chicken salad sandwich. Very happy with all of them! We also found out that the new owner purchased the place just under 2 months ago. They had a steady flow of customers every time we went in there, so they must be doing something right! We highly recommend Java River for great coffee, service and food! And if your not in a hurry check out the gift shop, if you work your way to the back of the store there are some locally made items too. My wife and I bought one of those (working) really cool over sized clocks that are made out of a cable wire spool! In short (after a long review haha) we loved the whole experience. From the moment we walked in, to the moment we walked out. Actually that's not true... we are still enjoying it! Because we bought coffee to bring back to California. It's really hard to pick a favorite, but the "Nutcracker" is sooooooo delicious! I don't know anything about the previous owners, but I can tell you Tatia and her crew are killing it! I guess the coffee is OK. I was not pleased with the demeanour of the women. I was not welcomed into the establishment. The person who helped me was annoyed by my children. I asked questions, received a blank stare and short answers. I didn't not feel welcomed. I felt like I was given attitude. I can say one of the ladies did acknowledge I was leaving and made up for the other women's lack of customer service. She did wish me off to a good day. I've never been to a coffee shop where I had to use Cup creamers. I wish they would have had regular half and half for my black coffee. read more
