I dropped in on a weekday, late morning, to grab a jolt of caffeine before heading out for a hot, busy afternoon. The co-owners were on site: Margarita was behind the counter and Bill was reading a book to a child nearby. The spacious room was dotted with a few other visitors, including a table of women having a lively conversation. A Sade LP was playing on the hi-fi, and as side two ended it was replaced with a snappy jazz record. The café has many food options; I chose a house-made pastry that was perfectly flaky and well-balanced. My iced latte was just right too. I sat for a bit to review some papers I'd brought, and noticed plenty of seating options. Several tables along a wall had access to outlets, for those who need to plug in devices. Margarita brought my order to me and we talked awhile (it turns out we have mutual friends in Quincy) and she happily shared her experiences of growing her business. She also pointed out the books available to read on-site, as well as the paintings on the wall by local artists. Most are available for sale. I stopped in to get one of my favorite drinks and was greeted very politely. I even had a nice conversation with one of the young ladies working the register about the amazing-smelling candle they had burning inside. Everything was pleasant. When my drink was finished, I was handed my cup and noticed that it had leaked a little down the side. No big deal these things happen. I wiped it with a napkin, but the cup was still a little sticky. As the owner of a detailing business, I really didn't want to put a sticky cup into my vehicle's cup holder, so I politely asked another young lady if she had a wet rag that I could use to wipe it off. She said she could take care of it and walked over to the sink. While I was waiting behind the tea dispensers, I happened to look over to see what was taking a little while. I heard Lexi, the young lady who had taken my cup, quietly rudely talking to another employee about me and discussing the fact that I had asked for my cup to be wiped off. When I looked around the dispensers, we made eye contact, and the conversation continued. I honestly didn't appreciate being discussed while I was standing right there, especially over something as simple as asking for a sticky cup to be wiped down. I remained polite, took my drink, and when she asked if everything was fine now, I said yes and thanked her. I completely understand that these are young adults and that everyone has bad moments, but we're not in high school. Customers shouldn't feel like they're being talked about while they're standing right there. There was absolutely no reason for a simple request to turn into a conversation about me. I'm not writing this review to be rude or to attack anyone personally. I'm sharing it because I've been coming to Mimi's for years, and this one interaction unfortunately left a bad taste in my mouth. I would rather bring something like this to the business's attention now, in hopes that it can be addressed, than have a similar situation happen with someone who may not be as understanding or polite about it. I still appreciate the business and the people who work there, but I do think this is something that should be addressed. Sometimes a small interaction can make a much bigger impression on a customer than you realize.

I let her pick the coffeehouse we visit and that's how we ended up at The Beanhive. Upon walking in, I knew we picked a great place. The Beanhive has the vibes of grandma's house. Everything feels vintage, antiqued, and from the 1970s. The decor is definitely eclectic and feels like they raided said grandmas' house for all their furniture. All of that is a positive in my book. Emily ordered a caramel latte and I got my usual iced americano and we split a warmed up cinnamon roll for breakfast. It didn't take too long for our drinks and roll to come out. The americano was as dark as the night sky and that was a good sign. I took a sip and was instantly in heaven. This was, without a doubt, the best americano I've ever had. Emily was smitten with her caramel latte and we both loved the cinnamon roll. We stuck around a bit longer than intended because we both just loved the vibe of the place and the baristas make us feel really welcomed. If I lived in Galesburg, this would be the only coffeehouse I would visit. Sidenote: They do have stickers, pins, shirts and other merch if you are looking for that kind of stuff. I ordered a "loaded" roast beef sandwich, and paid to upgrade to a Philly with peppers and onions. I also upgraded to the district chips and dip. I ended up throwing it in the trash it was so disappointing. For $15.24, the sandwich had no cheese, the roast beef portion was very small and the meat was super dry. It was quite a departure from the description of "marinated and slow roasted beef, PILED HIGH with melted provolone." The onions and peppers I paid extra for were abysmal - maybe 2 slivers of each. Additionally, the district chips and dip I upgraded my side to were terrible - the chips were chewy and stale and cheese (while flavorful) was congealed.
