They have good service and good food. The decor is very nice. The foodvtastes really good. We enjoy this place tremendously.

Food is good, the best Ruben I could find within 100 miles only problem. The floors are a little slick if you're using a cane or crutches.

This place is hit or miss, depending on what you order. I ordered the Broiled Chicken Breast Salad. I expected a whole, fresh, perfectly broiled breast. Instead it was chunks of leftover chicken that were over re-heated... hard and dry. The light pink tomatoes were tasteless and laughable. I brought most of the salad home, to put fresher ingredients on it. Pictured is my store-bought tomato compared to all the light pink ones that were on my salad. However, their Bourbon Chicken on Rice, Steaks and Tenderloins are delicious. Like I said, it depends on what you order. One of the few non-chain places to go in Keokuk was this place, next to Walmart. The service was fine, and it seemed to have a decent menu, as there were plenty of items the Hawkeye had to offer. I settled on the buffalo chicken sandwich which came with fries. I also had an extra side of mac and cheese, which I thought was runny. But nothing's perfect I guess. No one was covering the front when we came in, probably waited for about 5-10 minutes before someone came by and took us to a table. The waitress was very nice and polite. I ordered the bourbon chicken that came with rice (was expecting white or a pilaf but it came with wild rice which isn't a favorite). The chicken was a little hard to cut. The broccoli that came with it had some bad spots on it as well. The sauce on the chicken was tasty and the breadstick and salad were pretty good. They even brought the ranch out in a squirt bottle so I didn't have to ask for more. read more

I always have a good experience when I go to the Hawkeye restaurant. I have been there for my birthday and other people's birthdays several times. They used to have a salad bar that was nice and have taken it out. I think a lot of people miss that. It is quaint and the servers are nice. read more

Obviously a local institution in Keokuk--very busy for a Tuesday night. I can see why--it's a huge menu so perfect for family outings. We tried seafood pasta and French Dip sandwich. Above average--fresh, well prepared. HUGE servings. My Caesar salad was quite good, crispy and fresh. It is much more than the typical Midwestern beef and booze place--although there was plenty of both if you are so inclined. And if you wonder why local owned places are important--a bunch of folks are working there and working hard from what we witnessed. And working together--if someone needed to help they just did it. Was traveling for work and had dinner here with my wife. One of few non-chain restaurants in town. And clearly a fan with the locals. Good was ok. Wasn't a fan of the house specialty dressing, which is a French with blue cheese in it. Our server (who was sweet as could be) insisted that I try it, even though I asked for something else for my salad. It too was sweet as could be and was too much for me! Only thing we ran j to was that because of the slower, small town feel, it took a little bit to get service, as the servers are having extended conversations with the patrons. Not terrible, but I was hungry and didn't want to talk that much. Just wanted to eat at that point. Again, my issue not hers. Would eat there again if given the chance, and wasn't in a rush. read more

What a neat lttle family owned place in the middle of nowhere. I really enjoyed having dinner here with a colleague of mine I was with for some training in this remote part of the Midwest in the tri-border area. Service was great, and the food excellent for the type of family owned meat and potato place it is. My bud had the sirloin and he described as the best steak he has ever had. This is a small town favorite. The menu is simple yet well populated and there are usually a variety of specials. I have been here a handful of times over the last five years. Sometimes on week nights and on weekends. The food is spectacular and the layout and updates to the restaurant are great. The food and apps come out at an appropriate pace too. My complaint every time I am here and the reason it didn't get the last start is the drink service. Consistently it takes forever to get a drink. In that place I would think a round of waters showing up or offered would be a pleasant gift while waiting. But even with that at least half of the time the 2nd drink service has arrived after the meal is over. Basically you don't have a drink during dinner or you have to nurse the first. Staff definitely need to see this as an issue. read more

Called the restaurant and was told their "blackened" has spices and they would not offer a credit. I'm gonna get a little long winded, but the short is, they cut corners and its not like it used to be. WAY over priced for the area! We went there for dinner on my mother's 83rd birthday with family while I was in town to visit. We noticed immediately that the menu had changed recently and prices increased. But we were hoping the quality had stayed the same. And if you reviewed the menu on their website, you will be even more surprised once you get to the restaurant and see the menu since it is different and prices are much higher than shown (at least from the date I wrote this). We started of ordering appetizers; cauliflower, mozzarella sticks and the beef ravioli (not on the online menu. The cauliflower and mozzarella sticks seems the same, but the new item was completely awful. The stuffing seemed to be something produced by a pet food company and tasted equally. And we could tell they were all frozen items, but were not surprised by that. Most of us started with a salad to start, which were all decent, but two of us that ordered caesar salads were terribly surprised to find that the do not know what a caesar salad is and brought us salads with carrots and egg in them, and dressing that was closer to vinaigrette and lacking any taste of an anchovy; the basis of the salad. On to the entrees. One person got the catfish, two others the center cut sirloin (early bird special), while two others got 6 oz. filet mignon. Everyone thought there's were decent, but definitely not worth the price. The steaks in Iowa are always great quality, so we were at least not disappointed that they cut corners on that. This was the only reason I did not give them one star. As for the service, our waiter was trying very hard, and was pretty attentive (for a restaurant was pretty empty at 5:30pm), but he definitely didn't have it all together. Forgot us asking for ranch dressing, forgot one of our drinks we reordered later, and also mixed up our items on the checks when we asked him to spit them up. I have eaten at this restaurant for the past 20+ years since it is located in my hometown where I grew up. And since I moved away in 1995, I have always gone there when I am in town to visit family and friends. The food has always been pretty decent and reasonably priced for the area being a small Iowa town. And I have had many fond memories with friends and family. So it comes with heavy heart to see the restaurant increasing prices to that which are equivalent to a large City like Denver and Chicago, but cutting corners decreasing quality of service and food. And I am not the only one dissatisfied. A few nights before I asked my local friends to meet me there and they all said "it is over priced and has gone way downhill". But we went just the same to see for ourselves. I can't see how too many people in a town the size of Keokuk, with a median annual salary of $36K can afford this place now, and why they would continue to go there. Guess because there's not much else out there. But if I lived there still, I would just stay home and grill for these prices. No matter how much I made. read more

She is FANTASTIC! Truly one of the best. Service was fast, and the food is good. Bloody Mary drink special that night was on point. Shrimp Jammers and Fried Mushrooms are killer apps. Driving into Iowa on a road trip from the east, first place I come to is Keokuk, and here's a restaurant named for the Iowa state emblem, so I figure it'll be bursting with Iowa patriotism, right? So I wind up having a chicken-fried steak, a dish I associate with the southwest, with Wisconsin cheese soup. It was perfectly all right, nothing memorable nor bad, but not what I'd think of as Iowan. And, hey, a side of corn, which I do think of Iowan, which wasn't notably fresh or tasty, but it was April, which isn't really corn season. read more

We were visiting from out of state and arrived in Keokuk, Iowa late in the evening at the time all of the restaurants in town were closing for the night and we arrived at the Hawkeye restaurant right as it was closing. Instead of telling us they were no longer available for service, they invited us in and were completely hospitable. Our waitress Sarah treated us like family and was totally attentive to our wants. The environment was clean and relaxing and the food was great! It didn't taste like something just thrown together at the end of the night. The quality and preparation were completely satisfying. If we are ever in Keokuk again we will definitely visit Hawkeye again! I recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a good place to eat and relax. read more

Came to Keokuk for the Geode Fest and we were too tired to cook after 3 days of geode digs. Smaller communities in the Midwest like Keokuk have fast food chains moving in, but still have long-standing restaurants run by locals. You can expect good down-home cooking at The Hawkeye. I had one of the Sunday specials: Country-fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, with a side salad. Dessert was included with my meal. No high cuisine for me, just give me filling, tasty comfort food and I'm happy. Dependable fare, great service. When we arrived, the place was packed and the remaining seating was reserved, except for the tall seating in the bar area Which would not have worked for us after all the exercise we had...we're old... however, they had a patio area and the weather was fabulous, so they were able to seat us. We didn't come all the way from Texas to eat the same fast food we can get at home, so the Hawkeye was a good choice for us. read more
