We expected (and found) excellent frozen custard, but we're also (pleasantly) surprised by fresh-baked cinnamon rolls and fully loaded waffles. We thoroughly enjoyed the huevos rancheros and the waffle with BBQ pulled pork. The waffles were light and airy on the inside with a bit of crisp on the outside. They were a nice compliment to the toppings as the dense Belgian style would have been overpowering (imo). Service was engaging and with a smile and we all feel we made new friends. This is a great place to visit at 11:00 am, and we plan to visit for more custard after the performance tonight. Maybe they should start the 11:00 club--extra points for those who come at both 11s :). read more

This is a v casually run shop, open when they feel like it, or not. My mother in law has a good relationship with the owner, so our experiences with service were good. During our visits, we got to meet the owner and two of the owner's daughters, one of whom was Annie herself. The shop is always full of the owner's family and grandkids just hanging out. The first night we visited, one of the teenage grandkids served us. They had just made an almond joy custard, and it was life changing. The texture and flavors were so good. My husband is not a coconut enthusiast, and he really liked it. We came back two more times for custard during our five day stay and were helped by Annie and her sister. I got chocolate both times, which didn't blow my mind like the almond joy, but it was still great! Just a note: I don't recommend the waffle as a dessert. It wasn't a Belgian waffle at all, for those who like that style like with Belgian pearl sugar and whatnot. But if you want a breakfast waffle, have at it. You can do scoops in waffle bowls or cups, and you can get toppings. Prices are a tiny bit high, but you get some quality custard for sure. There aren't a ton of dessert options in that tiny little town, but their custard would be good even in a town with lots of options. For sure a little gem of a spot. read more

Took a group of teenagers to tour the historic city of Nauvoo, Illinois. It was summer time and you can guess-extremely hot and muggy. After a couple days of nonstop info loading and touring, we had a break to shop. When we spotted this frozen custard shop, my hubby and I knew we had to stop and treat the teens. They all loved their custard inventions and enjoyed some time to sit, cool down, relax and read the funny reviews underneath the glass table weights. People from all over the world have written funny things, reviews, or just their name. Sort of an "I've been here" clean graffiti vibe. Thanks Annie for creating a fun atmosphere for our little band of weary travelers. And you can never go wrong with a scoop of custard. read more

No one answers the phone and they don't update any websites on their hours. Disappointing.

The "Tornado" with vanilla and Heath bar? Shut the door. I'll drive a long way for that anytime. Best desert in town. Clean, friendly, yummy and just a good place. If you're a nice person they may give you the wifi password too, which, in Nauvoo, is kindof like oxygen since this is the town the cell companies forgot. Oh, and they take credit cards now. Drove into town late, Annie's was the only option open. Best to think of it as dessert instead of dinner, despite the waffles. The custard is good. The waffles are okay. The combination sounds magical, but the sparks don't fly. Interior is kind of fun/quirky. Not the best value. I'd opt for just custard next time. Their custard might be good but we couldn't find out. I hate to give them a rating based on the fact that they kept closing for unknown reasons, but it was irritating. The sign on the door would say "we'll be open about 5:30ish" but the open sign was lit. We tried several times and kept finding them closed during times they said they were open. So we gave up, not sure why we kept going back. That's a pretty poor business practice. read more

We were excited to try Annie's Frozen Custard on our recent trip to Nauvoo since it generally gets good reviews. We were extra pleased to see the sign in the store window that they serve Belgium waffles all day. We showed up at 10:35, very excited and very hungry, only to find a hand-written note on the door that they were closed until the "bagpipes passed by". There was no indication when the bagpipes would be passing by, and what happened to Belgium waffles being served all day? We were willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, though, and we really wanted our waffles, so we headed over to the Nauvoo Market (highly recommend, by the way) to get some fruit to tide us over. The bagpipes finally passed by and we were ordering our waffles by 11:15. We paid roughly $40 for 6 waffles and bottles of water. We were asked to tip up front, with options of 15, 20 and 25%. We chose the 15%. The price seemed steep, but we were starving, and if the waffles were amazing, maybe it would be worth it. We took our seats. A few minutes later, a waitress came over, dumped a pile of silverware in front of my daughter, and said, "Here, you can set the table yourself." About 15 minutes later, she began delivering our waffles, one at a time, with a few minutes in between each one. Clearly, they need more waffles irons. I was excited to see that the label on the syrup bottle read "100% pure maple syrup". Finally, something classy, I thought! Upon tasting it, however, I was saddened to discover that the bottle had been refilled with the cheapest, thickest syrup imaginable. When I asked the waitress if there were any other syrup options, she looked at me in disgust. And don't even get me started on the waffles! All white flour, tasteless, and left us feeling like we had rocks in our stomachs. And the saddest part: We really wanted to try the custard sometime, but I just couldn't bring myself to spend any more money at this establishment where we'd already wasted so much. read more

VERY Unique Vanilla! I am not normally a vanilla fan, except maybe a really good vanilla bean ice cream, however, this was really good vanilla. Pair the Vanilla with the Fresh Raspberry sauce, and 'Wow!' They also had a Lemon Ice Cream that was really good too, again with the fresh fruit based toppings was just delicious. I really liked the Chocolate Ice Cream with the Lemon; but I should have added the Raspberry Sauce to complete it. A few in my party got the Belgian Waffles with the Ice Cream, and shared a bite; if you are a bit on the hungry side, these were really good too. The kids liked the ability to decorate a napkin and place it under the glass table top. Very entertaining for the family. Extremely friendly and kind owner . We were there on Sunday , not knowing they are closed just tried entering and the owner let us in even though she was closed for business. She offered us free samples before ordering and did not charge a penny to us for our order !! Extremely generous ! Delicioso! Go for the frozen custard - it sounds a little odd, but it is simply amazing. It is certainly the richest, creamiest ice cream. And there are many options at this place. What can I say, I'm a sucker for custard and this places custard is the bomb. I had their Salted Carmel and Orange Lemonade Sherbet...amazing. Someone in our party asked if the Salted Carmel was good and their response was, "it's so good we had a shirt made with it on it." I totally understand now, it was amazing. We sampled a bunch of flavors and they were all great. The chocolate and vanilla did not disappoint but my favorite was the salted Carmel. If you're ever in Nauvoo in the summer months (I'm pretty sure they close in the winter) you have to go to Annie's Custard. It is some of the best I've ever had. read more

We are just passerby's here in Nauvoo and we stopped to get custard and bread pudding. It was so good. This town is super small but it's adorable. The service is a little slow because, as you can imagine, for a town that small only one person was working there. Just don't be in a hurry and you'll like the food. read more

I loved visiting here! My friends and I were walking back to our hotel, late after an outdoor show so we wanted a treat for the night. We walked in to Annie's about ten minutes before they closed but the employees were so accommodating! After that night we stopped by as many times as we could before we left a few days later. I've never been able to tell the difference between soft serve, frozen custard and frozen yogurt (a la Pinkberry and competitors) - not because I don't know anything about ice cream but because I've had some really good ice creams, wonderfully creamy and full bodied. But after a summer and possibly autumn in the midwest (first MI and then IA), frozen custard has definitely earned a spot on my palate - especially at Annie's because they offer the dessert in lemon flavor (as well as vanilla and chocolate). While I've had some really good vanilla flavored custard in MI, none were particularly inspirational - I mean, it's vanilla, it's nothing to yelp about! But the lemon flavor was appropriately tangy and when drizzled with raspberries (as recommended by the server), it's incredible. So for the rest of my travel days, I will actively seek out lemon flavored custard like I seek out bacon in chocolate or ice cream or anything else =) read more
