Comes with a heavy portion of rice so if you're in need of a rice dish this is a great one. Meats were decent and overall a solid pass. Thing is its $18 for 5 pieces which is a STEEP price but I will admit it was darn good! (5/5) Ayam Kalasan (1/2 portion) - So this chicken literally only came with the chicken, no rice or sides. There's chicken, beef, egg and various veggies inside mixed with coconut flavored cooked rice. Spicy hot sauce inside and it is realllllly spicy, so move it to the side if you're not a fan. No wonder why friends didn't provide any positive feedback regarding this dish when bought extras for them (while I had others) in the past. My husband and I ordered the nasi bunkus, which they only have on the weekend. and the Cha Kwey Teaw. The nasi bunkus was not good at all. The rice was very saugy and not the best one I have tried at all. And the Kwey Teaw was very bland and was soso. Overall, the food that we choose was not good at all. Usually, if they only have it for just specific days for an entree, it should be the best food. The service in there is not great. The workers are relaxed, don't really check up on you. Java Spice is one of the Indonesian restaurants I frequent when I am craving the taste of home. Especially now that I live in North OC where there is only one Indonesian restaurant, I would drive 30 minutes to Java Spice or West Covina for more options. Service: I recently came with a really large group (~20 people) for a weeknight dinner. The owners were so nice and accommodating. We were doing family style, and they gave us extra plates and bowls upon request and were patient when taking our orders and serving us. Our orders came out fairly quickly to our stomachs' satisfaction. Food: Most dishes I've tried here are pretty good. Below are a few favorites that I would recommend. 1) Nasi bungkus: Only available Saturday and Sunday, but worth the planning ahead. 2) Tilapia pecel: The sambal (spicy sauce) hits the spot. I'm going to ask them if they would let me buy the sambal to take home because it is that good. 3) Beef rendang: Pretty flavorful and the meat is tender. A hit among my non-Indonesian friends. 4) Sate babi kecap manis (pork satay with sweet soy sauce): It was recommended by the owner, and we were glad we heeded his recommendation and ordered this. I usually don't like pork satay and much prefer chicken satay, but I was surprised that I liked the pork satay here more than the chicken satay. Comes with 5 skewers. 5) Pempek telor/kapal selam: Some of my non-Indonesian friends also loved this one. Items I would skip next time or get somewhere else: lontong komplit, sayur lodeh, siomay, sate ayam. Parking: Located in Yes Plaza Food Court, Java Spice shares a large parking lot with many restaurants in the same plaza. While we were able to find parking fairly easily on a weeknight, it could be tougher on the weekend. Note that they were closed at 8 pm on a Thursday night, so I would recommend calling ahead to confirm their hours if you're planning to go after 7:30 pm. read more

Just a heads up, the pricing online is not up-to-date so be prepared to pay a bit more. Nasi Goreng Kornet Char Kway Teaw My order was ready, piping hot, when I arrived. The total for 2 dishes (including tax, of course) came out to be a whopping $30. I know inflation and all, but would have been nice if the prices were announced when I placed the order, or when I came in to pay. They did not have any to-go menus, but they will be ready next month - which tells you that the prices will probably be going up even more. The Nasi Goreng Kornet was not mind-blowing like I remembered. It was dry and looked more like rice cooked with sauce, with a small egg and a few slices of tomato and cucumber. The Char Kway Teaw was delicious, but not worth the price tag. The parking lot was packed for a Friday afternoon, but barely any patrons inside Java Spice. Service was good, and the food was packed well. Loved that they also included a small red rooster garlic chili sauce inside each box. They also sell Indonesian snacks and etc. at the counter. It's been a while since I visit this place, so I decided last weekend to revisit their food. We placed our order by the phone. Here are some of the dishes that we ordered: - Siomay Bandung: for someone who grew up in Bandung. I think this dish reassembled my hometown dish. It has a great flavor, especially the peanut sauce, they absolutely nailed it. The only thing that I should mention is how small the portion is. I feel like they could give more tofu or the siomay. - Pempek Kapal Selam: It's basically a fish cake with egg yolk in it. It's delicious if it's eaten fresh. I would definitely prefer the Pempek Lenggang because its cooked with egg. The vinegar based sauce is their specialty, definetely similar to the one in Indonesia. -Bakmie Ayam Bakso: It's pretty good. Definitely not my favorite.However, if you are a noodle lover, you'll like it. -Nasi Bungkus: is the star of the show! It has a bunch of different kind dishes into it. You also get beef rendang and chicken inside the dish! All of the things in Nasi Bungkus dishes complement well with each other. Pro Tip: Customer service is ok. Don't expect you will in for a treat with a good customer service. However, I feel like the dishes are the main selling point here! We sat down, were given water and our food, and that was pretty much it. Our Nasi Bungkus was not distinct in flavor or taste. It was very soggy and sour though. I have to say that the desserts they offer up at the register were good. If you go, go in for that. Located in a little dreary strip mall, the ambiance is further lacking. We had a great meal here. We are familiar with this plaza with Phoenix Food Boutique. We had meant to try this restaurant out previously but for some reason we were not able to. Owner was chit chatting with all patrons one table at a time. I like such personal touch at small service oriented restaurants. Order was taken promptly, service was on point, food was brought out of the kitchen piping hot and all our requests were attended to immediately (+1) We ordered the following: Nasi bungkus $10.95 Beef Rendang $10.95 Fried rice $8.95 Es Teler $4.95. Total with tax came to ~$40 Beef Rendang had so much flavor. The meat was so tender and the dish paired really well with the rice from the Nasi Bungkus as well as the Vegetable Fried Rice we got for Ian. (+1) Nasi Bungkus was deeeeelicious! The chopped chillies on the side brought up the flavor to another level. I like my food spicy, and this did not disappoint (+1) Portions on the items were enormous for the price point (+1) Es Teler was an interesting drink.
