This is such a great place to go to if you're looking for a quick meal and opens fairly late on the weekends. Really good vibes and service is quick and welcoming. We ordered the chicken rice bowl and the Taiwan dama. I ordered the chicken ginger rice bowl twice because it's really good in my opinion. The taiwan dama was also good too. This review is for a delivery order on grubhub, but the review is strictly focused on the food. I ordered the popcorn chicken and beef broth. The bag was only filled halfway and the chicken lacked the flavor of popcorn chicken. (Go to lollipop in Db instead) Not worth $8.50 if they're only going to fill the bag half way. Then, the beef broth that was ordered came in the smallest container possible for $8. It did not taste like a bit salty and like msg. Umami Bistro is easily one of the most authentic Taiwanese restaurants I've been to in a long time. I went late at night, just an hour before closing, and the staff were incredibly welcoming--no rush, no shortcuts, just genuine hospitality and great food. We ordered the chicken rice, popcorn chicken, stinky tofu, luwei combo, and pork cheek rice. Every dish was spot-on. The chicken rice was flavorful and comforting, with tender meat and aromatic rice. The popcorn chicken had that perfect crispy texture and was seasoned just right. The stinky tofu was bold and delicious, served with pickled cabbage and spicy sauce that balanced the funk beautifully. The luwei combo came dry (no soup), just the way I like it--braised items packed with flavor and a satisfying mix of textures. I order Taiwan labo rice bowls. The meat tasted ok, but it was very skimpy. So if you're ok with very little protein and eating 90% rice with some fermented daikon/kimchi then that's fine. Literally 7 tiny pieces of pork as shown in the photo. I ordered 2 bowls to try and it took 15mins. There was no one else there just to give some references. I am not sure if this is a sit in restaurant. There were kids toys microphones for karaoke on one of the table. The chef that prepared my food was laying on chairs in front of the cashiers desk. There aren't many Taiwanese spots in Socal so when I discovered Umami Bistro, I knew I had to try them out. They have so many good dishes that I've yet to their their whole menu since I don't live that close. My #1 favorite dish and basically the only item I get is the Butter Shimichi noodle. If you have had this dish, you'll know the hype. The bounciness of the noodles, the running poached egg, slices of beef shank and the spicy sauce is such a perfect combination. I often pair this with their Watermelon Green Tea which is made with actual watermelon. However, it is not always watermelon season so it's not always at a good sweetness level. My fiance also gets their House Beef Stew Rice which she really enjoyed. The prices are all super fair and the portions are solid. There are so many other dishes that I still need to try so I will definitely be back! read more

Lao Chin Chi is basically ZhaJiangmian mixed with minced pork and veggies & egg and stir well with their house made sauces. It was flavorful but not too overwhelming. Butter Shimichi is specially made butter sauce with shimichi for adding extra flavor. I didn't taste the strong buttery flavor but I was addicted by the taste of the noodles. Popcorn chicken bento rice -the boneless dark meat was tender inside and crispy outside. They used five spice powder so it was flavorful. Price was pretty good and the taste was not bad. I also bought some frozen soup and homemade spicy sauce! The portion may seems small, but a side and a drink, you will feel full but no guilt! The only negative thing could be the service. Mmmm another beef noodle soup spot! I was looking for new restaurants to try in the area and stumbled upon this place. Apparently they had just opened a few weeks ago. We got the Guba Umami beef noodle soup and Koba rice (pork belly over rice). Beef noodle soup was amazing- broth was delicious but a little spicy, beef was super tender and melted in your mouth. The rice was incredible as well. Pork belly was soft and flavorful, but not too fatty. One thing I think was weird tho, was that they gave you cold soy egg on top. I think it would've been better if it's served warm. Service was good! Our server was attentive and gave us two small bowls for sharing without us even asking. I called to inquire about stinky tofu and I asked very simple questions: how much is each order and how many pieces come with it. I needed to know because I was ordering for a big party so this was crucial as I may need to order more than 1 order. He told me the price and I repeated it back and he didn't understand. I asked again and then he confirmed. Then I asked for the pieces per order and he started becoming aggressive and basically shouted back to me "I ALREADY TOLD YOU!!!" This whole exchange was in mandarin. At that point, I was very fed up and he was extremely rude and not helpful and told him I'm not ordering from him. This whole phone call was less than 5 minutes. I definitely recommend their popcorn chicken and the chili wontons. Food came out fresh because it was HOT! Came here with my boyfriend and he loved the food. Popcorn chicken (mild) was perfect on the seasoning and the chili wontons had a good kick of spiciness and some slight sweetness (I feel like they added a bit of soy sauce?... but it was good!!!). We also ordered the signature beef noodles Guba Umami, which was very flavorful. I loved the meat and noodles--the soup had slightly more flavor than what I prefer for my tastebuds, but my boyfriend really enjoyed the dish. The only thing I would recommend is bring cash because they charge 4% for card. Service at the time was alright. AMAZING place! I used to work at a Taiwanese restaurant and this place is like BEYOND amazing. Their food is INCREDIBLE! The flavoring is divine, textures are immaculate, and you can tell the chef has curated and crafted his recipes to perfection. Spice levels can be adjusted so it's great for all ages and spice tolerances. His boba is also literally better than sunright tea studios. The tapioca texture is immaculate and drinks are really high quality. The popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup, and golden kimchi are my absolute favorites! The food here surpasses any other popcorn chicken i've had in my entire life! (and i grew up in the San Gabriel Valley eating Taiwanese food weekly). I believe my wife and I walked in to this restaurant maybe two or so years ago because we noticed that they offered fresh fruit drinks/teas. I tried a grapefruit green tea, no sugar and light ice and now like two years later they are literally my addiction. No one makes a better grapefruit green tea, not Omomo or Sunmerry, & I shouldn't just mention that one drink, all of their fresh juice drinks are extremely refreshing & tasty. They are always quick & efficient & i love the large straws that they offer so I can get all of the pulp in the drink. I also recently tried their dry noodle with beef and it was super yummy so the food is great as well which I should have tried sooner because I always noticed when I was picking up my drinks that they had a steady stream of people picking up food to go. You have to give this place a try but don't order too many grapefruit green tea because I order 4-5 at a time and I don't want them to run out You guys are amazing, cheers read more

It's their soft opening right now so some items on the menu may not be available. Constructive feedback: The noodles in the beef noodle soup could have been cooked for a shorter period of time and the plating could have made the food look more appetizing. When I found out that this place was from the original owners of Jungle Tea Bar, I was ELATED. My friends and I equate summer with watermelon green tea as it has the right amount of frost, fresh watermelon, and strong green tea flavor. Pair this with popcorn chicken @ medium spicy and it's the perfect summer/weekend snack. I usually get 25% sugar but when it's watermelon season and watermelons are sweet, I get 0% sugar and it's perfect. 12/10 recommend and pls don't let this business die bc I don't want to go through the pain of losing watermelon green tea again read more
