This is definitely a locals, mom & pop (or mom & mom, dad & dad) coffee shop that has as much character and friendly service one would expect from said shop. I appreciate these characteristics and very much recommend this coffee shop, and especially as a name brand coffee shop escape. My only gripe is that ambience, perhaps being due to the furniture configuration, leaves something to be desired. What that something is, I am unsure of, but it could use updating. "A Home Away From Home" Been coming here since it Opened. It has gone through many incarnations and clientele. I love to cosy up to the fire place. The newest "re-design" cuts out the couches and cosy areas around the fire. Bummer. I need my "built ins" creature comforts that exist outside my home that offer me "society" and "comfort". I would put a "pit group" seating environment. When I was a kid we sued togo to the Chart House in Malibu on special occasions. It had a cushioned and chair ring around the fire pit. What can I say I love my fire. The food is great and the good coffee flows freely. They don not seem to mind "campers" folks who hand out using internet...they do not even mind if folks sit all day having only bought coffee.It has a kind and caring atmosphere. Great place to start or end your day. I often meet people here for work meeting, social meeting, artistic brain storming and even therapy! Coffee-in fact all beverages are served in china and glass with silver ware. Which is a nice touch. Their disposables are recycled and sturdy.My job can require a sort of camping element. I carry a set of tin ware. Cause I do not like plastic knives. They have quality condiments, games available, a warm haven before and after these especially uncertain days and a truly kind and quirky staff who seems to get and welcome all. My son and I were there last night. We are going through a rough patch.We both work to keep our household going. We just took three family members through illness and death. Lost a home and a family of 10 years. When things were the roughest we came here. My son remembered that last night and went up to the counter and asked if they were hiring and the man said...:"well we only hire a certain kind of person here.." My son said he asked for resume and said " we will see." I like that. it showed he is thoughtful I had no idea what my son was doing at the counter. He is normally rather reserved. When he came back to the table he said..."I just asked if they were hiring". You could have blown me over with a feather. It was sweet. My son and I are all we have on the planet. We have a very hostile landlord who could care less about anyone anyone or anything. The guy has been so abusive...and he and his wife live below us.Let's just say " we know NO peaceful enjoyment" in our place. So we often seek out the places that make us feel at home. I often recommend it to clients and friends for it's warmth..and for it's lack of the hyper energy you get at other coffee houses. When all we seek if a little comfort and care.Java Station is just that...A cozy home away from home. read more

This is my favorite coffee house in SB. The baristas are friendly and most have been here a while. The coffee drinks are well made and reasonably priced. I like the selection of old, beat up chairs and sofas for seating and they have a fireplace to warm up by on overcast or rainy days. Wifi too! Can get busy here though with groups of moms enjoying coffee after delivering the kids to school or college students studying during finals. Oh...they also make some great sandwiches! read more

Food was fine but customer service was extremely lacking. The guy at the register acted like I was putting him out when I placed an order. I will not go back. Fantastic coffee, excellent friendly staff that provided wonderful service, thank you! I got an americano and the bean was one of the best I have had in Santa Barbara. I've been living in Washington, DC for 3 years now, and (regretfully) think I have become a bit of a coffee connoisseur (I say regretfully because I dont like being snobby about coffee, but I cant stand a burnt taste or poor roast). I search for good coffee places in SB whenever I am home, and Java Station is top 5 by far! My one suggestion for Java Station is to have soy milk available as creamer. There are so few places that offer it, but when a cafe does I cant tell you how appreciative I am. I think customers with lactose intolerance a very grateful when a cafe that notices not everyone can drink milk. During a recent visit to SF I noticed that most places had soy available, which made me exceptionally happy because I didnt have to uncomfortably ask the busy barista if I could grab a bit. read more

Atmosphere: For coffee places, atmosphere matters more than coffee to me. This place is great for both getting work done or just relaxing. Chill staff, very friendly. A range of patrons from students, to work-from-homers, to the local aging population, bikers and bicyclists. The music, however, is generally classic college rock or indie. But, never annoying. Tons of seating, about equal amount of comfy couches and small tables for working. Big doors and for fresh air. Consumables: Lattes are excellent (they make their own vanilla syrup too). Perfect combination of coffee and light fare. They actually have real food here, which is nice if you are on a coffee / productivity bender. Try the tomato cream cheese bagel. Nothing is super cheap but it is all good. read more

I stopped here today for a caffeine fix on my way up the 101. Loved the coffee, vibe and bagel sandwich. I will definitely stop here again! Everyone was very nice. There was employees sitting on the floor eating behind the counter, watered down blended drinks and let's not forget the unkept employee making sandwiches with his hair everywhere scrapping the knife on the side of the trash can that he uses to cut the avocado. I've frequented coffee shops for well over a decade and never had an experience like the one I had there today. Great coffee, great bagels and pastries, and most of the employees are excellent. So credit where credit is due. I went there this morning and came back just over an hour after I left for more coffee and pastries. I received a phone call right before I arrived and continued the phone call in the Java Station parking lot. Some man I have seen there regularly (though I've never seen him do work there) came out, got in my face and accused me of casing other people's cars and told me to stay away from the other cars in the parking lot. I was bewildered, especially since I didn't recognize him as an employee there. I asked him if he was the owner (though I thought I knew who both of the owners were) and he told me the owner had asked him to "keep an eye on things". It seemed to me he was a regular who was just a little crazy. So I walked inside to ask the employees if he actually worked there. As I was waiting in line to ask this, he got in my face while I was in line and started harassing me - to the point where I had to interrupt a customer placing an order to ask if he was actually an employee. Because if he wasn't, the police should be called for harassment if he didn't stop. To my shock, after an awkward pause they told me he WAS an employee there. So I left. And since there is no way to contact the owners other than coming in or calling while they're at work, here's the feedback. I figure if the owners don't care about things like this, then potential customers will probably want to know about this, especially since it seems like they willingly tolerate such behavior. So there's your heads-up! It's a shame, because there are some really cool people who work there and some great coffee and food. But hiring someone who gets in customers' faces and harasses them completely negates all these things. And from what I've seen on this Yelp page, this isn't the first time something like this has happened at Java Station. read more

I was extremely disappointed during my visit to the Java Station. When I went to fill my cup with coffee from the pot, the pot was empty, the next coffee pot I selected was also empty. I let the barista know and she took her time and finally came out, refilled the pots and walked away. And what do you know: the half & half was also out! Once again I had to let her know, during this time she s busy enjoying her drink and messing with her phone! I get the half & half...and there s no lids for my cup!!! Not once did she bother to check the counter and see what else needed to be re-stocked considering I had to inform her twice if empty pots! They make a stink if you mention Starbucks BUT one thing's for sure: STARBUCKS HAS MUCH BETTER SERVICE!!! And they're always stocked! read more

First of all, I was born and raised in Santa Barbara, went to high school at San Marcos, and used to frequent Java Station as a high school student about five to six years ago. I used to love its fun and friendly atmosphere. Since I've moved back home, I've come back to Java Station several times. I have been appalled at the conduct of the employees and some of the patrons. As a young woman, I have recently felt uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe. Firstly, not only are the employees surly but they appear to be unclean. It is unhygienic for the male and female employees to wear their down while preparing food. Additionally, the food service is very slow. Secondly, some of the male patrons have made myself and friends uncomfortable. After my experience today, I will never go back. As my sister and I were leaving Java Station, a disheveled man closely followed us to my car. He stood closely and stared as we got into the car. He then approached my car, started touching my license plate and reciting my license plate number to himself. As I started to sit in the driver's seat he stood very close to me, touching the car and asking where we were going. We refused to tell him and drove away. It made my sister and I feel extremely uncomfortable and scared for our safety. I will never again bring my business to Java Station. It is an environment where the employees not only tolerate inappropriate behavior, but seem to condone it. It is extremely disappointing to me that a place I used to consider a Santa Barbara treasure has so severely deteriorated. read more

Big spacious place, with plenty of corners and spaces along the wall to sink into. Dimmish lighting at night, which is mellow to study to. There's a fireplace to boot. Wonderfully comfortable and every bit of seating is fixed up with a couchlike cushion, which is a huge plus (at least for me). read more

A nice stop just off the bike path for a treat. My kids bring a game to play in their backpacks and enjoy having an Italian Soda. Finding a seat is tricky and pastry inventory can be low. Not a place to "wine and dine" a client or impress out-of-town guests. read more

My wife said she had a great experience there yesterday (her first visit), but we had the total opposite experience today. There was no one in line and the place was maybe 1/4 full of people. Apart from the fact that there were couples with two laptops sitting at tables and not speaking to each other and everyone in the place looked like they were hooked up to the matrix and in a daze (the place was eerily quiet...), the vibe seemed remotely pleasant. However, despite the relaxed and low-energy status, the young man behind the counter seemed like he was in the last place he could imagine being. He avoided eye contact and acted as disinterested as possible in our perusing of the menu. From everything we could tell, there were no specific menu items--just a board that listed what kinds of breads, meats, cheeses and so on that you could build your own sandwich with. When my wife started ordering he shoved a piece of paper at her with a list of ingredients and a pencil to, presumably, make her order official by actually listing the ingredients she wanted. Since she had already made her order vocally, while she was filling out the form he walked into the back and grabbed a few items, including a large jar of mayo, walked back out and dropped them on the table as if he was being grievously inconvenienced. My wife turned around and asked me what I was going to order and I said I wasn't going to order anything, that I would never order food from someone who clearly had no interest in actually making food for others. I can't necessarily judge the establishment by this young man's angry-zombie energy, but he does work there, there was no one else present and he dominated the energy that was being put out in the name of the restaurant. If he's the owner, the place is doomed. If he's not the owner, I sincerely hope the owner figures out what's going on and fixes this. I'm not a coffee person (my wife is), but I am a consumer who has been around for many years and I am a food service professional. I would give this place a second chance if I knew, first, that this guy is not the owner and, second, that the owner's blood would run cold if he/she/they knew this kind of activity was going on. read more

This place is great. I've been there a dozen times and never had snippy or poor service. It's a limited menu for breakfast but it's tasty and pretty healthy. I'm a tea drinker and appreciate the good variety of teas. If you want corporate mandated service get your self to Starbucks. This is a one-off with character! The coffee I had was fine, and I can't tell you about the food because the guy behind the counter was SO RUDE to me that I didn't want to spend any more money here. The man I'm talking about has California flag tattooed on his right upper arm. If he's rude to you, too, please be braver than me and report it to the manager or owner. God, I hope he is neither. Basically, I asked the girl working the register if I needed to pay for a refill as I wanted to heat up my coffee by adding more. She seemed unsure and this guy piped up that, no, I did not. I'm at the coffee, adding a bit more, when he walks over and starts explaining that large cups like mine have a free refill, but smaller ones don't. I interjected to tell him that I planned on only adding a little bit every time my cup cooled. My point was to let him know that when he saw me up here getting more, i was just getting a little bit. I didn't want him to think I was helping myself to full cups all the time. He never heard this because as soon as I started talking, he stopped and abruptly turned his back on me while sneering, "Whatever...." Like a god dammed teenager. This guy needs to be fired or he needs to be working in a way that doesn't require him to be talking to customers. I wouldn't feel so draconian about this if I hadn't read the other bad reviews of this place and noted that the majority of them mentioned the rude behavior of the man behind the counter. He has a problem, a personality disorder of some sort, and he shouldnt be making customers--or people in general--feel bad. The food here is good, but over priced and the service is terrible. The staff makes you feel like you are inconveniencing them by ordering anything (even hot tea!) After working at a coffee shop for a couple years, I admit that I can be a little picky, but as a barista I would never treat customers the way that they are treated in this place. Though this place has pretty good coffee, the bagels are bad and hard. It offers a lot of seating and free internet (which is the main reason I go here), which is great, but the employees always seems sort of put out when you place your order and can be found lounging and smoking in the back most of the time.
