This review is better late than never...I am honestly not much of a sandwich person, but this is absolutely the best sandwich shop in town. Two weekends ago, we hosted a birthday party for my seven year old. We wanted to have sandwiches for these adults and these were an absolute hit. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo because people ate it too fast to get a good one :) We ordered the turkey sub. The servings were so generously cut. Everything was so fresh and delicious from the lettuce to the bread. One mom came up to me and asked where the sandwich was from because she also said it was the best one she's ever had in town. We went to a birthday party a few weeks before where they also had a party sub and it was amazing as well. I heard several people complimenting that host as well. Thank you Valentino's for not just your delicious sandwiches but your friendly service both in person and on the phone (ordered via phone a few days before), your timeliness, and awesome staff! The subs are served on a large piece of wood which they ask you to bring back when finished. I brought it back right after the party because there were no leftovers LOL. Love to have a take and bake option in SB! Their pizza is yummy and flavorful. The salads are great too. The only reason I gave 4 stars is the worker on the phone seemed a bit unprofessional in how he spoke. For example when I asked " how much will it be?" He said " Idk...like $22-23 or something??" My friend and I wanted pizza for lunch and I remembered this place was on the way to her home near Goleta. I ordered our medium 12" pizza before I left my house and it was ready when I got there about ten minutes later. It was wrapped and instructions were included as to how long to bake and the temperature. The ingredients were fresh and the smell in her kitchen as it baked...so good. The man at the counter was friendly and the place seemed clean-it's a "take n bake" carry out situation. They also have great sandwiches and salads-they have catered some staff luncheons at our school. read more

I have now visited this hole-in-the-wall, female-owned pizza/sandwich joint three times. Val's reminds me of what each neighborhood use to have in my hometown of Chicago: a family-owned, killer sandwich shop--though they also serve "take 'n bake" pizzas here! I had visited once before for a quick grab 'n go sandwich. Fellow Elite Vanessa D told me about this spot and recommended the hot meatball sub. She was spot on that it was the best around town! The marinara was flavorful without being acidic or spicy. The meatballs were tender with just the right amount of seasoning and spices. Add in the freshly sliced cheese, and we have a winner on our hands! My partner and I were planning to stop in at the newly opened Good Land Wine Shop for some wine tasting. I told him I needed to eat something before indulging. We came in to Val's for their $11 Sandwich Lunch Special (half sub, chips and soda). I had the pesto chicken, he had the turkey. Both were made fresh that instant and massive. The small sub is plenty to fill most people up. Best part, the owner herself was there and we chit chatted a bit. Fast-forward to post-wine tasting and I had ordered two medium "take 'n bake" pizzas to go via their website. BLT and Val's Special came shrink-wrapped with baking directions in 10 minutes. We drove home, preheated the over and before we knew it, we had fresh baked pizzas that were ready to be devoured. I must say, the kitchen staff are pros because that Val's pizza was beautifully decorated. Side note: I absolutely love how they decorate for the various Holidays. Most recently it was Halloween with candy, orange string lights and even the option to pre-order a pizza on orange pumpkin crust. For Valentine's they also do a pink heart pizza. Cute! Really enjoy their take and bake pizzas. It's awesome to call ahead and get it made up, pick up on thr way home from work. Turn the smart oven on from the cell phone (or call my wife or kids to do it). Get home and pop it in for 10-15 min and boom, DELICIOUS pizza. It kills any of the national delivery chains and even out local one. For lunch, their sandwiches are good too (and HUGE), but probably my favorite thing is the chicken artichoke salad. Hands down Shayre is an angel! This was our second time ordering a bulk order from this establishment and she got it done! We ordered 120 half sandwiches (100 turkey and 20 veggie) for new student orientation. Haven't been to Valentino's in ages even though I live nearby. Saw they had an Axxess deal and gave it a shot. Wow. I REALLY enjoyed our pizza (Val's House Special). All of the ingredients are super fresh and their secret red sauce is delish! Very easy to make too, only 14 minutes and it comes out fresh and hot. Will definitely go back. Only issue for me is that I'm not a fan of thin crust pizza, which this was, so I'll ask to see if they have something a little more traditional next time. As for subs it's definitely underrated. It's probably one of my favorite places to get a sandwich in SB, something about them I just really love. Bread is always fresh and the fillings are never lacking. My favorite cold is the Italian & hot is the Meatball sub. The hot Beef & BLT are really good too. I've had this debate many times with friends, as I'm sure you have as well. Who has the best sandwich in SB? South Coast, Sam's, Panino? Wrong - though great options. The best sandwich in SB is the turkey sub at Valentinos. Fresh baked roll, healthy serving of meat, shredded cheese and just the right selection of condiments, topped off with Italian dressing. My mouth just watered as I wrote that. It is a bit of a hole in the wall with only a small table out front, but you must try it. So delicious! Plus their service is always fast and friendly. They also make a delicious Italian sandwich, take-n-bake pizzas that are bomb, and will do a monster sized sandwich that loses none of the quality of their regular sandwich. Enjoy! read more

We've been going here for 30 years at least or whenever they first opened . Love the Mediterranean pizza with pesto rather than tomato sauce. Get the sundried tomatoes on the side and add about 2-3 minutes before it's done to keep them from burning (my experience) and I blot a bit of the oil off the top too at that point. That and a family dinner salad and you'll be a happy and full camper. It's so good that I've rarely tried anything else....... and that's 2-3 times a month for most of those years. Best kept secret and hidden gem in town! I'm noticing they have a solid custom base of locals though. I just had a great turkey sub. I had the half sub and salad combo. The sub was made with love and care, and looked great. I ate half, and saved my other half for dinner. The half sub is big! Veggies in salad are fresh and have good flavor. I had a small bite of leftover sub that I'm saving, and the sub got even better in flavor after a few minutes (after the ingredients mingle)!! Yummy and fresh food, made with live and care! Don't count on them being open. After driving 10 mi and arriving at 6:15 sharp they Locked the door when I got 20 ft from the entrance. The sign on the door and website says they're open till 7:00 p.m. but don't count on it. The owner or manager drove by me in the parking lot after an employee came outside and brought him his pizza and rolled down his window and said we decided to close early tonight with employees still working inside. As a youngster, my family shied away from bake-at-home pizza. It just wasn't the same. And I retained that bias for many many years. My miserly ways got the better of me a few months ago, when I offered the Valentino half-off Axxess deal to some friends who wanted pizza for their dinner party, and I collected the pizzas for them. Totally decent tasting. I tried them for a second time recently, ordering Val's Bambino in the 14" large about 45 minutes ahead of time by phone. It was waiting for me to pick up at the exact time I requested, and I got the ongoing 10% off axxess deal, which ended up as part of a tip, why not. It comes on cardboard, with a sheet of baking parchment, directions for baking, and a coupon for $1.50 off the next large pizza or calzone. Just slip the unbaked pizza and parchment onto the top shelf in a 450 degree oven for 12 minutes and hot baked pizza comes out, which easily slips back onto the cardboard for slicing. I drizzled it with some local olive oil, and fresh parmagiano-reggiano, and it was good to go. Warehouse shopping pizza might have Valentino's beat on price, but I'll pay a little extra for a local business. Served with beer, I was set for a cozy evening with my friend, and the latest episode of Lost. read more
