Java the Cup opened recently in Wingate, right down the road from a Starbucks. I've been very excited to have a local coffee shop that isn't a chain to support. Well it has been a let-down to say the least. Their technique for espresso is bizarre. I am not sure that anyone employed has ever made espresso before. My normal order is a double cappuccino -- two shots of espresso topped by frothed milk. Easy, right? Most recently, the barista steamed my milk, poured it into the cup, and then pulled two shots and poured it on top of the milk! I've never been so confused by coffee. Their grind settings and tamp skills also need tuning. No one has tamped the espresso enough, resulting in watery, crema-less, bad extractions. Lastly, the milk technique I've seen here is "stick the wand in the milk and just wait until it's hot". No texturing, and everyone I've seen just kind of rocks the cup up and down while steaming. It makes a pretty bad cup of milk. All of this together makes coffee drinks that are just not good, unfortunately. Their brewed coffee is pretty good, the roasts have been quite well-balanced and fresh. I'd recommend this place for a quick brewed coffee or pre-packaged snack, but avoid the espresso.

Java the Cup just opened in Wingate, and it is a breath of fresh air. I have been a student at Wingate for over two years now and this is a very welcome addition. They are serving up crepes, waffles, coffee, espresso drinks, and an assortment of smoothies and sodas to drink. They even have sandwiches, wraps, and salads too. The service is good and atmosphere is great. While the crepes and espresso still need to be improved, the waffles and house coffee, "java," are awesome! I have been in to the shop 3 times now and haven't had a negative experience. So far I have had the following: *Banana and Nutella crepe, which was good but the crepe was overcooked. 7/10 *Waffles, both with banana, strawberries, Nutella, and whipped cream: 10/10!! *mocha latte: pretty weak on both espresso and mocha flavor compared to many other places I've been. Came back recently with my friend and she got the mocha, and it was a similar experience. 5/10 "Java": strong, even-bodied coffee with good flavor. One time near closing they made a fresh pot for me because the one they had was there for a while, excellent service! 9.5/10! Definitely will continue coming here, I just hope they can maybe make the espresso stronger in their lattes! So far the fresh coffee, customer service, and atmosphere are what makes this place great

Loved the atmosphere and the crape I ordered! Staff was friendly and cleared my plate when I was done. Perfect little local coffee shop.

I always order the fluffy on GF with no cheese, and he always orders the Italian on GF with no cheese. There is cross contamination, so if you are celiac, you can ask them to change gloves, use a clean knife, and keep your sandwich away from the others. We have almost never received the correct order without cheese the first time, but they don't make a fuss when asked to remake the sandwiches, and they are very apologetic. These sandwiches are generous with the meat and other fillings, and the pizza-crust-as-bread works so well. We also get their delicious potato salad with our sandwiches. The seating area is not huge, maybe ten tables, but we've never had to wait for one, and we often take our order to go. The restaurant is clean, and parking is fairly convenient. Even with the issue of having to remake sandwiches, I still rate Blake's a solid five star. It's consistently delicious, and I like supporting a small business in my home community.

It is in downtown Monroe with street parking and some public parking lots. Our daughter said she has been there around 11:00am and got a spot on the street right in front. It is very eclectic with decor and items for sale. They have indoor seating, seating along entrance hall and outdoor seating. You order at one counter, which has a large menu boards above the counter. The young lady that took our order was very nice. You pay over at the bar area. It was not busy at the time we were there. I had the Salad Sandwich. You can get it with chicken salad, tuna salad or chickLESS salad. I had the chicken salad in a spinach wrap with lettuce and tomato. There are other bread options. The wrap was filled with the chicken salad. It was nicely seasoned and tasted really good. My husband and daughter both did the Pick Your Burger, a build your own. My husband had the burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles, grilled onions and pepper jack cheese. My daughter added bacon, lettuce, grilled onions and provolone cheese. They both said it was a great burger. We enjoyed our food. Definitely will come back.

We arrived at 9:45 on a chilly, drizzly day and there were probably 50 people in line ahead of us. There was a friendly staff member monitoring and organizing the line and she told us we were there on a 'slow' day because of the weather. After the restaurant opened at 11, we waited in line for probably another 45 minutes until we got inside to order. The brisket was great, but the best things we had were the kolaches (stuffed breakfast rolls available before they open), Cheerwine hot link sausage, and fruit crisp. The Cheerwine sausage was the biggest surprise. It had a great flavor and wasn't sweet - I've never had anything like it before. When we get a chance to go back, we'll probably skip the pulled pork and mac & cheese. They were fine but there's a lot to try and these weren't anything special.
