STAY AWAY!! And DO NOT BELIEVE the 5 star reviews. Those are paid reviews. We fell for that and hired Jay and realized that Jay is actually NOT a real contractor. HE LIED TO US THAT HE HAD HIS OWN LICENSE BUT HE WAS WORKING UNDER SOMEBODY ELSE's LICENSE. By California Law, this is illegal and he is entitled to give us the full money back at the time of our termination. We hired Jay for a 1,000 sq ft addition remodel and ultimately had to fire him for negligence and a complete lack of oversight. This was one of the most stressful and expensive experiences we've ever had as homeowners. Jay owes us thousands of dollars and months after firing him, he still has NOT paid us back. He was rarely ever on site and showed little involvement and care in managing the project. He missed multiple required inspections entirely and did not prepare for inspections when they did occur. As a result, we failed inspections multiple times, costing us significant money, wasted time, and major delays. Jay hired extremely poor-quality framing subcontractors whose work was unacceptable. We hired Jay Construction for a large home addition and remodel. Unfortunately, the project turned into one of the most stressful experiences we have had as homeowners. Throughout the project we encountered repeated concerns related to project management, communication, and workmanship. Several parts of the work required repeated follow-up, clarification, or correction, and coordination between subcontractors often appeared disorganized and inconsistent. One of the most serious issues we faced was active water leaks inside the house on multiple occasions during construction. These leaks caused damage to drywall and interior areas, and we repeatedly had to deal with the resulting problems and repairs. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Despite asking multiple times, no clear explanation or documentation was ever provided about what caused the leaks, what exactly was fixed, or how the issue would be prevented from happening again. We were told explanations would be provided in writing, but this never happened.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We also experienced issues with job-site organization and care for finished materials. Several finished materials that had already been purchased for the project were mishandled, misplaced, or broken, which created additional delays and costs for us. Another challenge during the project was the behavior and communication style of some subcontractors on site. In particular, interactions with one of the individuals involved in the project (Julio) were often difficult and felt unprofessional from our perspective, which added to the stress of the project. Workers also brought pets onto the construction site without our permission, which we found inappropriate for an active residential construction project. Smoking cigarettes in the yard beside the site and buds thrown all around the property. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Communication was frequently very difficult. Calls and messages often went unanswered for extended periods, sometimes weeks, and there was very little evidence of structured project management or oversight.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We were also asked to deal directly with subcontractors hired by Jay, which should not have been the homeowner's responsibility. On multiple occasions, subcontractors came to our property asking for Jay because they had not been paid, which created uncomfortable and stressful situations for our family. Another concerning issue was that a proper written construction contract was not initially provided by Jay, which is something a licensed contractor should normally prepare. Instead, we had to create and document much of the scope of work and payment structure ourselves in order to move the project forward. Later in the project, when this issue was raised, Jay attempted to have us sign a new contractor-prepared contract that was heavily one-sided in favor of the contractor. We were pressured to sign this document retroactively and back-dated, which we were not comfortable doing. There were also repeated situations where additional change orders were requested after work had already been completed or for items that were already included in the written scope of work. From the very beginning of the project, we felt there was constant pressure to introduce additional change orders. Jay and Julio frequently pointed out items they claimed were "extra," even when they appeared to be part of the originally agreed scope of work. We were repeatedly asked to make advance payments for milestones that had not yet started or were not in the agreed sequence. When we questioned these payment requests or asked for clarification, we were sometimes told that work might stop if payments were not made, which put us under significant pressure. Another very serious concern was that Jay was not licensed during the initial days of work on our project, despite representing that he was licensed to perform the work. Because of the ongoing issues with workmanship, project management, and communication, we ultimately filed a complaint with the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) regarding the quality of work and handling of the project. CSLB also found issues and sent him a disciplinary notice for his violations. Due to the ongoing problems, the project relationship eventually broke down before completion, and we had to bring in other professionals to review and address remaining work. Even today, we are still dealing with and trying to fix multiple issues resulting from the work performed by Jay Construction across several trades. We were in desperate need of exhaust fan in guest bathroom since I had my in-laws visiting from abroad. I bought a house last summer with one of those old school plastic shower stall in the guest bathroom. It made the space dark and cheap looking but I didn't know how to change it up without doing a whole bathroom renovation. I called around and talked to a few places, Jay was the most responsive and first to show up to take a look. He very quickly suggested knocking down the stall and rebuild the shower space with tiles and glass enclosure. His quote was the most competitive and I felt comfortable going ahead. He then suggested tiles with exact measurement and I ended up spending a lot less than otherwise anticipated. When the crew came for demo and tiling work, he was quick, polite, and left the place spotless when he was done with a completely rebuilt tiled shower space. We then had a little back and forth on the right glass enclosure - Jay ended up getting one I found online but he did all the re-work incl. some tile replacement and re-grouting for no extra cost. All in all the project was right on budget and took about a week without counting the wait time for the glass enclosure. The finished look is elegant, modern, and cheaper than my expectation based on Bay Area renovation horror stories.
