Stopped for quick cocktail before dinner. Erich, our bartender, was friendly and quickly got our cocktails started. I had a beer and Lissa G got the Yuzu You. It was a tasty drink, with shishito infused gin. Parking in the lot and on the street.

Awesome local spot. Amazing variety of beer and mixed drinks. Happy Hour is a steal, and the ramen is my go-to. The Gyoza/Sapporo deal is nice. Good deals all around. Bartenders (especially Sara, Constantine, Jackie, and Eric) are really sweet. And the owner, Mayuko, is devoted to making this the best neighborhood bar in Silverlake.

We stopped here on a whim. When I saw that Jay's bar was in a strip mall I fully expected it to be a dive bar, but it definitely was not. I was surprised that it was decent inside and to see craft beers and hand-crafted cocktails on the menu. A variety of their spirits are from independent distilleries, which is cool. They also serve food and offer various Japanese-American fusion dishes, including Ramen. From what I've heard their Ramen is supposed to be very good. I started with the Mr. C's Special (Tequila, triple sec, lime, agave, & jalapeño ($14). It was tasty. My friend wanted The Classic Easton, but they were out of cucumber so she went a martini instead. Our other friend had Bourbon & diet and the J's Special Burger with cheese. ($9). We also shared onion rings & fries. The onion rings were very tasty. There are two tv 's on the wall for your entertainment. The sound was off, but one had sports and the other a movie. The music selection was great and not too loud, so we were able to have a conversation. Bartender Nick was attentive and had a great personality. I wouldn't mind coming back and giving some of the other menu options a try. (Vegetarian & Vegan offerings are available, including a vegetarian burger.) Happy Hour Mon - Fri 4 - 7 p.m.

First one in at 4pm on a rainy Tuesday. I was told the chef isn't here yet and will be late. First impressions of Jay's is that it's smaller than I thought. It's located in a strip mall on the corner of Fountain and Sunset. I started off with a cold Kirin and waited for the chef to arrive. The bartender came up to me after waiting for the kitchen to be started up. I placed an order for the J's Special Burger ($12) with cheese (+$2). It doesn't come with a side so I ordered the fries extra crispy with the wasabi salt. I ordered another Kirin as I felt my order wasn't going to ready anytime soon. The burger is no frills, no veg at all except for the side of pickles. My fries were hot and crispy. The wasabi salt added a nice touch of flavor. So, as someone that likes spicy food, the added flavoring wasn't spicy at all. Upon closer examination of the burger, it looks like it's a preformed patty. Nothing special about it especially since I waited 30 or so minutes to come out of the kitchen. So, I think it's a quarter pound patty with a bun and cheese. It's alright but I think I can get a better burger elsewhere. Jay's is a cool place to hangout and have a drink with friends or a date. But, it's small and intimate. I can hear the convos going on. So, not a place to share intimate secrets, lol. I ordered a Soy Sauce Ramen to finish off my happy hour. The broth was super tasty but I had to add some fresh cracked black pepper. The ramen noodles had a nice chew to it and the fresh scallions were nice. Wow, amazingly satisfying after I finished the bowl especially on a rainy day. Jay's got a bit busier as it approached 6 pm. A perfect time to call it a day.

This little gem located in a little strip mall is worth visiting. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat and a couple drinks. My boyfriend loved his ramen (he's very picky when it comes to his ramen), while I had the cheeseburger and steak fries. The burger was tasty, but reminded me of a McDonalds cheeseburger that I could have had for 1/6 of the price across the street. The steak fries were underdone for my liking, so next time I'll opt for the regular fries. The drinks were well made and we watched movies on one of the two big screen TVs on each side of the bar. The best part was the bartender Maya. She was so friendly and personable and gave us amazing service. A solid 4.7 stars.

    No, they are not.

Both Yelp and the establishment's website list their hours on Fridays as opening at noon, but at 12:30 P.M. the place is closed up tighter than a drum. No hours are listed on the padlocked door, although a sign with an open padlock reading, "Come in, we are open," is displayed. (Someone who appears to be an employee just came by, looking confused, tried the padlocked door, then walked off.) I'm not sure what's going on, but I don't like wasting my time or travel funds.

My favorite bar when I lived in the city. Constantine was the best! Served up great drinks and even better service. A cute small bar with the best vibes.

Really cool spot with neighborhood feels for mixed drinks. The Little Doll cocktail is pink AF but one of the best mixed drinks I've ever had. Vodka, St Germain, Mint, berries, lemon and lime. SMOOTH, not too sweet and completely balanced. My partner got the Oaxacan Penicillin which would have been more appetizing to me if it was less smokey. Lots of vegan options which are awesome to find at a bar. I ALWAYS need carbs to compliment my drinks, which is why I don't often drink but I went with something boring and simple because I wasn't ready for a full meal: fries! And they ended up blowing my mind, oddly. They were dream fries: super fatty yet extremely crunchy. You could actually taste the potato. Their normal fry platter comes with garlic aioli which of course isn't vegan so I swapped it out with their vegan house sauce and it was awesome! I got laughed at by my table for waxing poetic about the fries.. but then they tried them and never said another word, because they were too busy stuffing their faces. Love the vibe, super positive and friendly. Gets super busy as it gets later. Parking lot has valet and there's plenty of street metered parking alongside Sunset.

    Tonkatsu Ramen
    Cory C.

Ok. Recently tried the food here for the first time. Their new(ish) menu includes many delicious Japanese dishes! There are also many vegetarian and vegan options!! The tonkatsu ramen is delicious. I prefer it without the pork chashu. The flavor is rich and very filling! My boyfriend ordered it last week and I kept stealing his bowl! The Karamiso gyoza are so delicious and perfect for sharing The tonkatsu pork sandwich is also amazing. Crispy and delicious. The wings are okay. The pieces come out very small. While they're crispy and flavorful there are better things on the menu. Not to mention, the staff here is so friendly and nice. It feels like a neighborhood bar you feel welcome in!

I personally think a different texture element would have added to this, like crushed peanuts or something, but did enjoy this. Spring Onion Tempura - 5+ stars. Delicious! Tasted like onion rings, but with a lighter texture. Bonus tip, request the bbq sauce like dipping sauce, it creates the perfect balance. Filet-o-fish Sandwich - 4 stars. This was really good, but was definitely improved with the bbq like sauce I had with the onion tempura. Yakinuku Steak - 5+ stars. I'm not a big steak person but thought this was excellent! Rich in flavor, great texture, and cooked perfectly! I need to have this in my life again very soon! They have tons of sake here, but I opted for a glass of Chenin Blanc which was excellent! I love the ambiance here, it reminded me of an Izakaya in Japan. Very elevated but casual and cozy at the same time. Well done Ototo, see you soon!

If you're willing to walk a bit, park up the street near the apartments. We chose to seat at the bar and had a wonderful experience talking to our sushi chef and Tiger, the manager. We were told that our sushi chef was one of the best chefs from their Japan branches, and that was evident in all of the sushi we ordered. Every cut of fish was consistently thin and crafted with expertise. We ordered quite a spread (spicy tuna crispy rice, albacore with crispy onion, eel nigiri, sweet shrimp nigiri, agedashi tofu, wild cod nigiri, etc.), and every dish was on point. The fish quality is unlike anything I've ever had before. In fact, Tiger told us the tuna is brought in from Japan. After ordering from our iPad, we started asking our chef and Tiger what their favorite dishes were, leading us to try all these different, off the menu customizations. Overall, such a fun dining experience and really solid sushi. We will absolutely be back.

It was as good as I remembered, and probably even better. I can't imagine letting another eight and a half years pass without going back. The only negative is that parking is either difficult or $15, which feels bad in a pretty quiet residential area. Better to take a car in any case, so you can enjoy the extensive selection of sakes. We shared a full-sized bottle, I forget which but I think it was a junmai daiginjo, and it was lovely. Tsubaki is such a nice, welcoming little izakaya. Service is great, the atmosphere warm and easy. You just want to sit back and drink at a leisurely pace. The food is excellent, with a robust menu of creative Japanese food. We shared everything, starting with a stellar kanpachi crudo with ume ponzu, shiso, sweet onion and habanero pickles, and furikake. My favorite dish of the night was the tsukune katsu. I love tsukune, the tare-glazed chicken meatballs you'll find in any yakitori place. This was my first time having them in katsu form, panko-fried and served over cabbage with Kewpie mayo and tonkatsu sauce. The chawanmushi was delicious, silky steamed egg custard topped with Dungeness crab, truffle salt, and mitsuba. Likewise the kinoko tempura, an array of maitake, shiitake, and enoki mushrooms fried light and crispy, with yuzu shichimi and tentsuyu for dipping. We got a skewer of bonchiri from the yakitori menu, delightfully chewy bites of charcoal-grilled jidori chicken tail. Finally, a plate of yakisoba, pan-fried noodles with house-cured Peads & Barnetts char siu, pickled green garlic, and cracklin. We got the hojicha parfait, and it was more or less my ideal dessert. Roasted green tea soft serve with sesame black sugar burnt miso and candied walnuts with cornflake dust. Cold, light, sweet. I could eat a whole one by myself pretty much any time. After nine years in business, Tsubaki feels like an Echo Park institution, and the kitchen is as strong as ever. This was a wonderful dinner, one I hope to repeat soon, with more sake, more yakitori, and more hojicha parfait.

Anyway, we had the fried tempura, garlic fried rice, short ribs, and chicken oysters. Everything was delicious and I would get these dishes again. But my standouts were the short ribs, they were tender and the marinade was light and fresh. The fried tempura was another standout for me because the sauce paired so well with the lightly friend asparagus. And I'm going to to say the chicken oysters- I think they were grilled to perfection with a tiny bit of wasabi.
