Very cool little shop. The owner is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and willing to help. They even have an assortment of recipes that they will gladly share with you and help you tweak to meet your desired taste. My thermometer broke at some point during my brewing process and when I went in for a replacement they gave it to me for free. They have a great selection of grains, hops, and yeasts for you to browse as well as books about brewing beer and wine and even cheese making kits. The one downside is a lack of the actual brewing equipment. They have all the basics, just not too much more. All in all a really great shop for any local home brewers. read more

If you brew beer or wine then this is the place to go for supplies and know-how. Tom and Jill keep the store well stocked with everything you need to make some really great adult beverages. They also have some great items that you typically wouldn't find elsewhere; such as their new one gallon carboys and starter kits, in addition, anything they don't have in stock they can order for you and have within a week. Don't pay any attention to the negative reviews here; they're nerfherders who couldn't do the kessel run in under 20 parsecs, let alone 12. read more

Being new to brewing, I have a lot of questions and need some explanations on particular steps. Derek is always helpful, both when I am at the store, or if I just call the store. The 'new' owners (they've run the business about a year) are knowledgeable, helpful, and the store looks awesome. Great selection of bulk grains, good selection of DME, and all the hop & yeast varieties you need for your beer recipe. I had been going to Frederick MD for my supplies. No at all impressed with Jay's Brewing. I have only been there once, he didn't have the items that I needed in stock so he ordered them for me. I followed up to see if the items were in yet but he did not respond to my voice mails or emails, so I went somewhere else. The owner seems knowledgeable but very apathetic. I have had better experiences at My Home Brew Shop in Falls Church and Kettles and Grains in Leesburg, I would suggest going to either one of them over Jay's. Happy Brewing read more

Well I just visited the new Jay's and I must say... the new ownership (Jillian & Thomas) has really turned things around. The place is sparkling clean, very well-organized and the product selection / freshness is excellent. If you've "written off" Jay's, you absolutely need to stop by and see what they've done with the place. I contacted Jay's Brewing with a simple question about filling CO2 tanks (which they do!) and received a quick and friendly reply. I had a few more questions which were answered more thoroughly and promptly than I could have ever hoped for or expected. This is the best homebrew shop in NOVA hands down! The owner knows his stuff the website also has a blog with tips and recipes. Jays carries White Labs yeast which in my opinion is the best yeast for brewing. He has set prices on both hops ($1.99) and yeast ($ 7.99) where some other shops online and local change the prices week to week which doesn't make since for homebrewers. I've come in with recipes which he will fill and give suggestions to help make a better beer, you can also come in empty handed and tell him what type of beer you want and he will make a recipe on the spot. He will also sell grains in bulk if you want and if you want a special order he can place that as well. Derek has what you need to get started and advance in homebrewing, the bigger items like kegs and other hardware he doesn't have but you can find deals online from big online shops that can buy in bulk and sell at better prices. Derek, the owner (Jay was the previous owner) was very helpful in picking out what I needed to get started brewing without throwing in the kitchen sink. Any hobby can be fraught with "nice to haves" that can add up to a lot of money fast. He got me enough to get me brewing my first batch. He also took the time to ask me what kind of beers I like to drink and then printed out a recipe for a porter he recommended and then helped gather the ingredients. I was impressed with all of the fresh whole grains he had on hand. I am glad places like this exist in our community and I look forward to start brewing my second batch. read more

Jays brewing is a breath of fresh air to Northern Virginia. The only other shop is in Falls Church and are really geared towards kits and wine. Jays has everything I need including a substantial yeast bank, and a wide selection of hops. The grains are in barrels and are sold by weight so you can buy what you need. As an all grain brewer, this is very important especially when it comes to specialty grains. The owner is knowledgeable and friendly. He is more than happy to guide you through the confusing world of homebrew, wine making, and cheese making. The website is useful as there is a blog and kits available. Could not be happier that we have a legit Homebrew shop in Manassas. read more

.While the store is much cleaner, organized and stocked well by the new owners there is a few things that bothered me about the new management. First off they removed the prices from their website, when I asked them about it Jill told me they removed them because prices change with the market. I understand that BUT you should have prices listed either on your website or have them readily available when people ask. She had to ring me up before she could tell me the prices for some of there beer kits. Most people drive from far away so this info would be nice to know before we make the drive. Secondly they insist that everything is self serve to speed up the process. I can see how some customers might like this but honestly for me I don't want to drive 30 plus minutes each way plus spend over $100 (which i always do) to have to come there and work, it's your job to service the customer, while Jill was very nice and told me she'd help me this time so I know how to do it next time, I still found this almost rude. On the website it does say self service bulk grains but doesn't say anything about how the kits are prepared or the fact that you have to get the items your self. If you don't come with a recipe your screwed and have to ask for one so you can gather everything yourself which defeats the purpose of self serve if you don't have a recipe. Third the price is a little high. I spent $100 on two 5 gallon kits and a hydrometer, even with shipping I could have ordered all that stuff on line to my doorstep for $70. Honestly the new owners have done an awesome job turning the place around. I think this place has a lot of potential but these are some serious deal breakers for me. I must note that I mentioned to Jill that I used to email Derek and he would make the kits ahead of time for me to pick up and she said they'd do that no problem which is nice but given the price difference I'd rather order online. If they fixed these issues, Price, self service and prices listed I'd probably buy my stuff from them. For now I'll probably go there once in a while if I need something small to see how the store progresses, otherwise I'll order offline. read more
