As long as I've been in San Diego, going on 30 years, I've been frustrated by the fact that since people here don't really know what good BBQ is, they'll eat and like whatever "Q" they're served, as long as it smells smoky and is served in a relatively rustic manner. But the County always has at least one exceptional place, and sometimes, if we're lucky, there will be a couple in business at the same time. We mourn the passing of Brooks and Bobbye Huffman's eponymous shop; Duntae Bright's Barnes' BBQ; Martin Murphy's SQUE BBQ; Jeff Chan's Union BBQ; and Ami and Brandon Standafer's El Barbecue. At the moment, two local spots truly shine: Bowlegged BBQ, owned by Kenneth Hawkins and three Stance family members, all of whom serve up great barbecue and some of the best chicken I've ever eaten; and Jay's Southern Cafe, in Alpine. The meats at Jay's Southern Cafe are slow-smoked daily, with oak, and several times, I've hopped in the car and driven a half-hour for a plate of the restaurant's country goodness. Points off for no sweet tea, but points added for outstanding fried sea bass, excellent chicken and Five Guys-worthy French fries. Plus which, Jay Cousins and his family (this is most definitely a family operation) are among the nicest and most hospitable people you'll ever meet, and I'm including people you already know and love. Finally, if Alpine seems like a long way to drive for barbecue, remember that you regularly drive to Orange County for Vietnamese food, or South Bay for menudo, or wherever you go for whatever you like. This restaurant is worth your attention and your gas money, and should be added to your rotation.

Food is southern delightful. Jay is so sweet . His helpfulness is outstanding. Ambience is comforting cool . Go there and support this important restaurant. Have a party there . But order ahead so he can have food ready.

I just got back from Louisiana 2 days prior and didn't have time to whip up a southern feast for my son as planned (I'm just exhausted). This restaurant came through for me at the right time. I HAVE NOT eaten inside this establishment yet, but I did order food 'TO GO' for my crew (my kids)! They enjoyed it & my review is based on their experience and my objective observations. The consensus is that I will bring them back again (basing this mostly off their taste buds, so don't get mad at me...I only tasted 1 French fry. ) ___________________________________________________ About Me: I'm seriously a "Southern Belle" with Cajun and Creole taste buds, coupled with the need to have authentic options for smoked meats, whether Texas Style, Mississippi, Alabama, etc.... (I grew up with one of the best pit & barrel experts ever, and he taught me everything -my Dad. I'm forever grateful to him for my chef-in-training childhood -especially for waking me up early in the morning to prepare the smokers. When I'm at home, prepping and smoking is a source of comfort, its also an art & its ritualistically nostalgic for me. As for Southern CA & what lead me to Jay's Southern Cafe: I'm very particular when it comes to trying anything that's been "smoked" down here . I have had several mediocre experiences. ___________________________________________________ How Did I End Up At Jay's Southern Cafe??? So...my oldest son's birthday was yesterday, and I started researching. I had no idea that this spot was in Alpine. (I could slap myself for not knowing, but I'm busy, and I have a lot of 'trust issues' when it comes to anything claiming to be Southern food in San Diego County.) On a leap of faith (after reading some of the Yelp Reviews), I went to Jay's Southern Cafe and ordered him the 1/2 smoked chicken plate "to go." He had greens and okra for his side dishes. By the time my son got home from work, I knew he would need to reheat his meal, but he couldn't help himself and devoured it within a few minutes. (That's a great sign.) He said: "the breast is moist, through and through." "This chicken is seasoned." "I don't believe it -this is good chicken." "Wait a minute -this place is in Alpine?" ___________________________________________________ So, the first experience was great for my crew: my other kids also enjoyed their food: My daughter had a kid's meal (Baby Jay's Rib, Fries & Applesauce. My other son had the pulled pork sandwich with fries. (The food met both of their expectations.) I love yams, but they were sold out (and that's a good sign for me because I didn't get there until 6:15 pm to place a to-go order, and in my head, I'm thinking they sold out because they are just that good. ) I will go back to try the yams and some of their other side dishes, such as fried okra and greens. ___________________________________________________ WHAT DID I TASTE??? ***One of my son's fries fell out of his pulled pork sandwich to-go container upon him opening it in the vehicle immediately after we exited the restaurant, and I caught it in my hand -so, I did get a chance to taste something from here! (The french fry was cut perfectly; it tasted great, not oily, still had some skin on it & an authentic "potato" flavor, crisp on the outside, with a tender-soft texture inside.) ________________________________________________ Pointers: *The Service was friendly (not fake, not "over-the-top fake," etc.). It was just authentic service, and I appreciate that. *The order didn't take long at all. *I watched several people "happily" leave, including those who had dined in. *After eating the smoked chicken, my son asked about their hours and days of operation. He didn't even sit down to eat. He stood in the kitchen and wolfed down the half chicken to the bone. *I am so relieved that my son enjoyed his weeknight bday meal, thanks to Jay's Southern Cafe. {While there, I inquired about how long they've been open. I was told that that opened during the pandemic. What a gem this is for the Alpine Community.} Side Note: Please believe me when I say I am highly critical regarding anything in SoCal that claims to be a smokehouse, southern restaurant, and especially places claiming to be Creole/Cajun restaurants.... I can't help it; I was partly raised by my Grandmother (a legendary restaurant cook in New Orleans who came to the city as a country cook from Crystal Springs, MS). Additionally -I'm a bonafide southern cook with high standards & I greatly respect the flavors of the foods my ancestors raised me on and the recipes handed down to me.

Jeremiah is the best! Such outstanding service from such a young man. Jeremiah was so friendly, professional and kind.

To say Jay's Southern Café was mind blowing would be an understatement... My boyfriend and I took a little trip to Alpine for the night on Valentine's Day. We were in an unfamiliar area and weren't sure where to eat. Thank the Lord I used the right search words in yelp and this incredible restaurant popped up. People apparently drive from all over to taste this barbecue. We were so fortunate that our hotel was right down the road. On Valentine's Day evening, we both shared the brisket sandwich with coleslaw and grits. My grandmother used to make brisket and no one has ever come close in terms of juiciness and quality of the meat until we ate at Jay's. Brisket was so tender and the oaky smoke flavor was Absolutely delicious! Jay's barbecue sauce is out of this world. Coming from a Jewish family, my bar is very high for coleslaw. Jay's coleslaw is hands-down. The best I have ever had anywhere... Including my family reunions! Their sweet potato cinnamon roll was otherworldly! I have never tasted anything like it. I'm not even a dessert person, and I found myself devouring it when we got back to our hotel. So soft and bursting with flavors. Our server on Valentine's Day was Jeremiah, and exuberant, genuine, and professional young man who went out of his way to talk with us and make sure we enjoyed our food. He came by at least three times to make sure we loved everything. What an incredible young man! We loved the food so much that we were back today for their special brunch, which includes cheese, jalapeño and bacon grits. Jeremiah recommended it the night before so we had to try it. I ordered the brisket over grits and my boyfriend ordered the fried shrimp over grits. We were truly blown away by how delicious the cheese, jalapeño, and bacon grits was. So creamy and flavorful. The flavors were bursting in our mouths. My brisket was amazingly juicy and flavorful, just like the night before. My boyfriend's shrimp was delicious. We ordered two sides of the coleslaw just for good measure because it was that good. This place is truly a gem in San Diego. I have never had such delicious barbecue, anywhere! There are awards all over the walls, and the entire family runs the business. I would highly recommend every San Diego again or those visiting to make the drive up to this amazing family run establishment.

Yes it's good. Don't be sidetracked by the location, this place is legit. I am on a weekend getaway in the mountains and usually I'll find some small town spots to support. I was a little skeptical seeing this bbq southern cafe in the middle of a small town. I have zero hesitation telling you to come eat here. First- the service, there was a young man at the counter and he was welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. He told me what his favorites were, helped me pick sides and let me know what the wait time would be. Also melted my heart when we handed my order to the kitchen and said "here you go dad". Love a family spot. The food, I got the ribs combo with macaroni and cheese and potato salad. These two sides are the make it or break it in my family. The Mac was delicious. Flavorful, creamy with a browned top - perfect. The potato salad was not my family's normal- a little sweeter, less egg and mustard but was good. The ribs..... they fell apart, in the best way. Well seasoned didn't need sauce but the sauce took it over the top. Get EXTRA sauce. The only things I would say is it's hard to see inside due to the reflective glass on outside so I couldn't tell they were open. It was lunch time and I was the only one there. Makes me sad. San Diego this is worth the 30 min drive, get up here.

Just finished a hike and what a way to end the trip up in Alpine, but with amazing barbecue? Classic southern spices in a very conveniently located venue. Everyone is so kind, from Vi as you walk through the door. Jay, wow man thanks for bringing good soulful food to the area. Being born and raised Louisiana, I loved seeing the NOLA artwork all over the walls and can say the food is the real deal; it truly feels like home. We all will be coming back.

Ordered some wings can't wait to try them. They look really good.

Wings undercooked may need to be cooked longer I'll just give it another try maybe order something different next time

We had an early Mother's Day celebration at lunch today at Jay's and it was SO delicious! The Shrimp & Grits and the Fish & Grits were divine and the Ribs & Chicken were super tender with just the right amount of smoke. Oh, and did I mention the Greens??! Never thought I liked them but these are addictive!!!! Service was great and we even got to chat with Jay for a bit :)

We sat inside, though there is also a lovely patio outside with umbrellas. The service was friendly and the restaurant was clean. It was a bit noisy inside since there isn't much to absorb the sound, so you may need to speak a little louder during conversation. I did find the lunch menu to be expensive. We came here to celebrate my sister's birthday, and everyone seemed happy with their dishes: a shrimp po' boy sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and pasta with tomato cream sauce and shrimp. I ordered the chicken po' boy sandwich. The sandwiches were served with seasoned fries, but unfortunately the fries looked and tasted like they had been sitting for a a while--dry and not very fresh. My chicken po' boy was disappointing. The sandwich had tomatoes and some iceberg lettuce, but no sauce, which made it very plain. While the chicken itself was tender, it lacked flavor and the overall dish felt like it wasn't prepared with much care. For a $21.50 sandwich that was essentially a few pieces of chicken breast with tomatoes, lettuce, and old fries, it felt like an expensive mistake. Perhaps other dishes on the menu are excellent. However, having grown up with a father who was a top chef, I tend to notice when simple dishes--like sandwiches and fries--aren't executed well. These are usually some of the easiest things to get right, which made the experience even more disappointing for me.

Captain's Log -- Stardate 21,596…read more Twenty-one thousand, five hundred and ninety-six rotations around this magnificent sun have I endured -- each one sharpening my palate, steeling my resolve, deepening my reverence for the extraordinary. On this day, the winds of destiny carried my queen and me through the fog-draped canyons of Spring Valley, drawn by whispers ancient and savory, toward a hallowed establishment known simply as Bankhead. Mississippi-style cooking. The very words conjured visions of forgotten kingdoms. Make it so. We materialized within a modest strip mall -- unassuming as an unclaimed planet -- yet the moment those doors parted, I understood with crystalline Vulcan certainty we had not merely entered a restaurant. We had crossed the threshold into living mythology. David and Rose -- not merely owners, not merely cooks -- but keepers of a sacred flame ignited by their extraordinary mother in the 1970s right here in San Diego. Their lineage is not carried in blood alone, but in smoke and seasoning, in cast iron and cornmeal, in a love for craft no warp drive could outrun. I canna' change the laws of physics -- but these descendants have bent them entirely. David approached us with the warmth of a thousand suns -- laughing, storytelling, weaving us into this family as though we always belonged. He is no mere host. He is a Counselor of the highest order, reading the soul of every guest, delivering what the spirit requires. In his presence, one does not feel like a customer. One feels like crew. Then there was Betty, whose presence carried the quiet authority of a seasoned admiral -- dignified, welcoming, the kind of soul that anchors a ship in turbulent seas. And Zai -- that magnificent young warrior -- commanding the register with Starfleet precision while summoning miracles from that kitchen alongside Rose. I watched her and thought: Today is a good day to dine. This crew operates in perfect formation. Resistance to their hospitality? Futile. Now hear me when I tell you of the provisions. I, your Captain, did what any commander worth his commission must do -- I ordered with the fire of a Klingon and the logic of a Vulcan. I explored nearly the entire frontier of that menu, and what I discovered shook the very hull of my expectations. The beef ribs. By the Great Bird of the Galaxy. These were not merely ribs. These were relics. Carved from some ancient and glorious tradition, smoked to a depth that defies measurement, falling from the bone with a reverence that made me set down my fork and simply breathe. Mind-bending. Dimensional. The kind of food that makes a traveler question whether he has ever truly eaten before this moment. They do not simply fill your stomach -- they reprogram your memory. And then -- the Mississippi catfish. Crisp. Golden. Sovereign. Dressed in a crust that crackled like the opening of a long-sealed archive, its flesh within tender as mercy itself. This was not a side dish. This was a declaration. Soul food is not merely cuisine -- it is communication. A language spoken in grease and grace, in heat and heritage. "Infinite diversity in infinite combinations" -- the Vulcan masters understood this truth. Bankhead lives it. Every plate told the same story: a family refused to let their legacy die. They carried it from Mississippi soil, through decades of change, through the shifting tides of a city that rarely sits still, and planted it here in Spring Valley -- like a monument that earns its place not through banners, but through the undeniable power of truth on a plate. You are not merely eating here. You are tasting 1970s San Diego. You are tasting a mother's hands. You are tasting sacrifice and celebration and the stubborn, glorious insistence that some things must not be lost. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Spock spoke those words in cold logic. But here at Bankhead, they take on warmer meaning: every soul who walks through that door is met -- abundantly, joyfully, without reservation. No one leaves hungry. No one leaves unchanged. To those who feel the pull of the unknown, I issue my final command: Set your course for Spring Valley. Find the strip mall. Walk through those doors. Tell them Captain 619 sent you -- and watch as the universe rearranges itself into something that feels, impossibly, like home. To David, Rose, Betty, and Zai -- you have done what the greatest explorers of any age have done. You have taken the vast, echoing mystery of where we come from and made it something a stranger can hold in their hands, taste with their tongue, and carry forever in their chest. There are not five lights. There are not four. There is only one truth in that kitchen -- and it is magnificent. My queen and I depart richer than any treasure map could promise. Live long and prosper. End log -- Captain 619 Voyager. Taster of Worlds. Loyal to the flavors that refuse to be forgotten.

I'll be blunt. The…read morefood is mediocre and "someone" needs an attitude adjustment. But it feels like you're in a little restaurant in the Deep South with true downs home blues playing in the background. Go for the ambiance and their delicious Lemonade Tropical Mix.

Beautiful, hilarious, cool without trying, and somehow always wearing the most fire shoes in the building. She's the kind of bartender that turns "let's grab one drink" into "well damn, now we live here." Every cocktail was perfect, every recommendation hit, and her energy honestly makes the whole place. Protect Ria at all costs because that girl is a whole vibe. I Wish her all The health and the wealth and if yall don't give this woman a BONUS and a raise- i'm going on strike ;)

Everything is INSANE. I've even interviewed the "meat guys" who hang out with the giant smokers in the back lot and basically babysit the meat 24/7. They take their job very seriously, and it shows in the quality of the meat! The bartender made me a mezcal margarita once, and I had three that night and now think of them often. It's what gets me back in the door here. The mezcal marg and the meat. The live music is always awesome. We came recently and saw the Blind Miles Blues Band play - their vibe fit with the ambiance of the restaurant so well. It was awesome that our kids were able to run around and play while we ate dinner and talked. I am SO thankful for a restaurant that has food this good that also freely welcomes families with kids! Our waiter that night, Bryce, was awesome. He was SO attentive and so patient and kind when we had a bunch of requests for extra everything. We'll probably request him next time, he was that cool. Can't say enough good things about this place. I already can't wait to come back again!

Had such a great dinner tonight at Mediterraneo in Alpine!…read more We started with a few appetizers and honestly...they were the highlight. The MELENZANE RIPIENE (eggplant stuffed with ricotta, parmesan, and cherry tomatoes) was incredible: rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The calamari fritti was crispy and delicious, and the TONNO ASIATICO (seared ahi tuna with sweet chili glaze, ginger, teriyaki, and wasabi) was a huge hit at the table. We also had to try their house-made mozzarella sticks, don't skip these...the cheese pull alone is worth it For the mains, we had the CAPELLINI ALLA CHECCA and the RIGATONI ALLA NORMA, and both were fantastic. You can really taste the difference, the pasta is imported from Italy, and it shows in the texture and flavor. My husband also ordered the margherita pizza and said it's the best he's ever had, which says a lot! The space itself is big, welcoming, and super versatile. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, plus a large bar with a full menu. We tried a couple drinks from their spring menu: the pistachio espresso martini and the berry margarita both were so fun and tasty. The staff was also incredibly friendly and attentive, which really made the whole experience even better. Bonus: they have a great family-friendly area with arcade games and a pool table, which makes it perfect whether you're going out as a couple or with a group. Definitely a spot we'll be coming back to!

The fried shrimp had great flavor and seasoning on the breading. I personally would've liked them fried just a little harder for a bit more crisp, but they were still very tasty and fresh. The mac & cheese was creamy, rich, and definitely one of the highlights of the plate. The red beans & rice had a good hearty flavor, though it was a little on the salty side for my taste. For dessert, I had the peach cobbler. The flavor was really good and comforting, but I would've liked a little more juice in it. It would also be great if they offered an option to heat the cobbler, which would take it to another level. Interior is cute , screams New Orleans. They had one person working counter she was busy in the phone trouble shooting some software so I just ordered on the tablet. Overall, generous portions and good Southern comfort food. I'd definitely come back and try more items on the menu.

Breading was lightly seasoned (would have liked a little more flavor) on the catfish and shrimp. The shrimp were super plump and sweet. Catfish was a bit funky but both were best with the hot sauce. Gumbo had good flavor and a dark roux, just too much salt and the chicken was a bit chewy. Nice pieces of okra and really good sausage. Will come back for a shrimp poboy.
