Dang it looks like my review never posted but oh well. Went there on a Saturday night and the…read moreplace had just opened so there was only a few heads in the place. Got a nice couch facing the band where my wife and I had a great time. But those few heads very quickly turned into a full house. A funny side note, the drummer was a young dude and his band mates were easily in their 50s and 60s. The music for the night was a New Orleans style. Nice thing is there were no hoodrats in the place. All decent good people there to enjoy good drinks and good music. Rick, the bartender, makes a great margarita.

They've done a nice job of turning this into a hangout you can enjoy anytime. It still has the vaulted ceiling and wood beams of a nautical-themed building, but the decor has been darkened into a Speakeasy feel, with muted colors and subtle lighting. Went to their New Year's Eve party, which featured a live band and a burlesque show. Seems like they transformed the space a bit for NYE, with cabaret tables and such, which is different than other descriptions, but worked well for the type of evening. Food was not being served during the NYE event, so we ate downstairs at Killer Shrimp first (separate review). Staff up in the Yacht Club Speakeasy was friendly and welcoming, and the bar was nicely stocked, though they only had large, plastic cups (20oz college kegger size), and all drinks were served in them, which was a bit of a contrast to the supposedly upscale NYE vibe. No matter, this is a very minor point. The dance floor is ample, and the live band was very good. The band was primarily playing older rock and American songbook standards rather than contemporary tracks, again because the crowd was mostly on the older side; different, I assume, from the regular crowd. I'm excited to come back and see what the vibe is like on a regular night.

Brass tacks: Go for it. If you are a Jazz lover: Go for it. If you are an aficionado who would…read morerather rub shoulders with a mostly black audience of die-hard fans, rather than tech bros from Silicone Beach: Go for it. Great acts. Unpretentious. You meet all types--old and young, black and asian, westside and eastside, rich and poor. I suddenly was reminded by a documentary on LA's Jazz Scene--a documentary on KCET that focused on The Blue Whale in Little Tokyo--that I still have not written a review about The World Stage. The Blue Whale is a bit more upscale and attracts a little yuppie boho crowd. There's some of that at The World Stage. The difference: At The World Stage, the tech bros show up with their barely-hatched dates to show how "woke" they are...and then they're gone after the first half hour. So don't worry if seating seems tight: Brad & Grace are soon to be out-y. There's a real community vibe. Older women who are clearly volunteers greet you, very politely. They're often in shimmering gowns. And you can sense how much they care about the business. They'll offer you food and libations for a small donation. There's also some kind of more substantial fare offered by an independent vendor in the smoking patio. I really like sitting next to some of the oldtimers--some in their sixties and seventies. I'm not that young...am pushing fifty. But I'm at that stage in life when I identify with people who are their for true loves that are not instagrammable. These guys know what they're about. And you can tell they are really thinking about how to spend their entertainment dollars. The World Stage doesn't come super-cheap. And it's not a fancy venue...though it is in the heart of one of the great black neighborhoods--Leimert Park--and it's much cheaper than a few drinks at a yuppie bar with noisy muzak. I go here every few months. Wish there were more venues like this. And if you caught the KCET documentary, which focused entirely on the yuppie Blue Whale: This place is better. And you won't have to pay for parking!

With a storied past, this cultural gem continues to provide a space for creatives and listeners to experience intimate performances. No drink minimum, no parking fee, only $20 per ticket -- an absolute bargain! And to see world class musicians in such a small venue with a super chill vibe is amazing!!! 10 points for the sound man who does an OUTSTANDING job!!!

this is one of those reviews where i hate to write it because i don't want the secret to get out,…read morebut have to write it because i feel compelled to acknowledge and thank the staff and performers who put on this awesome series! in the interest of full disclosure, i'll be the first to admit that i typically loathe free events. not because i don't like free stuff, but because EVERYBODY likes free stuff, so free events usually devolve into a crowded, rude, ridiculous mosh pit of idiots, regardless of how awesome the content might have been (see my redbull flugtag in long beach review). jazz on the lawn was perfection. incredibly well organized, with ample parking in the office lot right next door, easily accessible restroom facilities, no lines at some very tasty and friendly food trucks (props especially to the sweet lucie's 1959 ice cream truck), and even a bicycle valet! the venue, stewart park, was ideal as well. just the right size for people to spread out without getting in each others' way, while being small enough to feel intimate. people brought their kids of all ages, and as a soon-to-be-dad, it was great to see all the little buggers running and dancing around in front by the stage while the adults had relaxing picnics on their blankets and chairs. there is even a playground area off to the side. last night was the first of a 5-week series, and the new orleans-style brass band was excellent. i loved the casual, local vibe of the whole event, including the lead singer's young daughter hanging out with him on stage while his wife strolled around the park with a newborn in a sling. it was all just so...right. thanks again to the organizers, performers, and vendors, who all had big smiles and great enthusiasm. a good time was had by all. and thanks to wifey for finding this great experience on discover los angeles!
