We had a simple 12'x6' existing porch removed and repoured by this joke of a company. The existing porch was over 40 years old, and it had began to sag near the house entrance. He made up a rather simple contract and required we pay half up front.
My dad was in the concrete business my entire life so I know how concrete is framed, poured and finished.
Well the first day went pretty smoothly, the removal was a breeze since the existing concrete was weathered and damaged from many years of ice and snow, salt treatments etc. When his guys formed it however I noticed that they were allowing rocks and pieces of the old porch to hold the forms off at the outer edge (thus creating a situation where they were sloped the wrong way).
I advised Jeffery of this at that time. He just brushed it off and said "oh it will be fine, I can eyeball this and make it perfect". WRONG, I know from past experience with my dad when I was younger that you can not "eyeball" concrete or any wet surface for that fact and put a proper slope or level to it. It requires a properly sloped form or guide to be used when you screet it. He didn't listen or correct the error with the forms and proceeded to leave that evening.
The next day was pour day. To my surprise, I had to call and order the concrete myself. We knew we would have to pay for the concrete ourselves, but he couldn't order it himself. Also I made the decision on how much to order since he told me his estimation and then asked if I thought it would be enough...I mean WTF dude?
So the concrete comes and he pours it. They let too much go in and then scooped out a hole AT the door with the screet board running the wrong way (along the house instead of along the forms). Then they proceed to trowel it down with it at form level (too high) on the outsides and it all the way at the top of the threshold at the door. After a bit they remove the forms and fill in holes where they did not tap the forms hard enough to settle the cement in properly, and then they broom it all off.
They leave with Jeffery telling me to mist it with water every few hours to ensure proper curing. The first time i wet it the water puddles against the house and at the door, and I mean a lot of water at the door. We immediately call Jeffery and he says he will be out a little later that evening to fix it. Well dusk begins to set in, we call him back and get the response that he will be out first thing in the morning. Now I knew good and well that the cement would be too hard to do any re-sloping the next morning, but like a fool I let him get away with this crap too.
So the next day comes, he shows up at noon and tries to use a trowel machine to cut down the high ends without success (I knew that would happen). So he proceeds to saw a 2" deep line from the middle of our door to the edge of the porch after he was explicitly told not to. This did absolutely nothing to make the water run off when it rains all it does is pond up against our back door and at times runs into the house.
It has completely ruined the floor at the door and is also damaging the siding where it ponds water and the cement is too high (it is above/ON the siding instead of the siding sitting down on it). There was no flashing put between the concrete and the seal plates before he poured it, and there was no bull nose on his forms so now it just looks like a big block of cement. The no bull nose is fine, but the incorrect sloping is not.
He no longer returns our calls and our house has been ruined at that area because of this incompetent owner that sat on the phone almost the whole time the job was being done instead of out of his truck working with and supervising his crew.
I mean my god, it was only a 12'x6' pour, and we paid him to pour it, bought his guys food and smokes while they were working, plus paid for the concrete. Now it will cost us over $1000 to fix his screw ups.
