I set out to use JC on the Move as contracted with U-Haul to get some crates as my house was already packed and staged in the front room for easy lugging. The U-haul website stated the cheaper DIY option wasn't available and steered me to JC on the Move. Being a local gal, I called in hopes of having them deliver containers the next time they were in my area to save them some pennies. (Ironwood is not close to Iron Mountain). Darell, the business owner, gave me a stellar deal for a "full service move" he called it. This included moving items (already packed and moved by me to the front of my home) into a 16ft moving truck and unloading it into the garage at my new house 480 miles away. Same day service! I figured, I deserved to reward myself with a painless move two days after my wedding. Great price! Plenty of space and drivers. Sign me up... Darell explains that I should be prepared to pay cash 1/2 after loading and the other at unloading. I asked about paperwork and was told that the movers would bring it day of as he did not have an electronic copy to email. Day of his staff were on time (no paperwork) and worked at a decent pace. Polite and EXTREMELY CAREFUL. I cannot say enough about these two guys. Everything and everyone made it the 480 miles in good time for unloading. At this point I realized that Darell, business owner, had absolutely no investment in the safety of his staff or procedures to have a successful business. While preparing to back the 16ft Penske into our drive to unload in the garage, his staff sheepishly admit that until today, neither had driven a moving truck and they were nervous about backing it up. (What kind of moving company doesn't train their staff before sending them 480 miles in a rented truck?) They accidentally hit the corner of our house, causing $795 of damage. (Not structural, NBD...accidents happen). I was very kind, as the movers did a wonderful job. They both got big tips for the care the took with each box. Darell, apologized for the mishap and told us he had insurance for the repair and to get a quote. A week later after speaking with 3 companies we sent an invoice noting our down payment of 25% on a $795 bill. Darell said his insurance deductible was $1,000 and that he'd send a check. I explained that I would like the money sooner than the 30 days he requested as the company needed the balance when showing up to do the work. Darell indicated understanding and agreed to send it when he could. We waited, texted, waited, put the repair on our credit card, texted, waited. The check never came. Polite, yooper-girl gets you nowhere, bring in assertive husband... Darell's story gets real honest at this point. Says he doesn't have a checking account. Says he needs to scrape up the money. Telling fibs until my husband reads our text exchange out loud to him over the phone... big sigh, finally, after asking if we could send someone to get cash, Darell figures out how to use the helpful services available at his local Walmart sending us a money order for $750... umm...$45 short, never mind. I'm sure that 45 dollars went to business improvements such as: a) Typing an effin' liability form and contract. b) Buying some orange cones for "practice" c) Training for drivers to be confident and safe Or maybe I should have kept the second half of the money sending him what was left after paying for the repair. You're joking right? You did not even reply to any messages begging for a reply - you simply bailed on us and left us with no help to move an entire home by ourselves. You did not ask for Hire a Helper to release funds back to us - they refunded us because YOU bailed and would not respond to them or us! I'm not even sure where to start here. I found them on the UHaul site, and their profile said, "Call us directly for better rates." I think they just wanted to get out of having any accountability to UHaul. The owner said they would arrive with two men and mover's wrap. He requested I rent UHaul blankets, which I did. On time, Tim and another guy (who seemed decent, so I won't mention his name) showed up. We weren't quite ready, which is on me, so I gave them $20, said get some coffee and come back in 15, keep the change. They came back about 20 minutes later and came inside. I directed them to the boxes that were ready to go on the truck. Tim complained that they usually have two dollies and they only had one. I suggested that we had a dolly they could use. Unfortunately, ours had a flat. Tim complained about that. I suggested that he take up to the local gas station to put air in the tire. They were gone about 20 minutes (the gas station is four blocks away), and told me it wouldn't hold air. Tim was VERY put out that my dolly wasn't working, but he was the one who only brought one. Next, I wanted them to bring down boxes from our upstairs bedrooms. Tim complained that we had stairs and he hated stairs. I told him that I had told his boss about the stairs for the estimate, and that's why I hired them. They finally brought down the boxes. Then Tim complained that my bed wouldn't come down in one piece, even though I am pretty sure that is how we got it up there. We disassembled the bed, and we had to keep breaking it into smaller and smaller pieces because he was standing around saying it wouldn't fit. He took some of the components down, then stopped saying the rest wouldn't go. (Side note: my daughters ended up getting the bed down on their own.) I asked them to take down my dresser, which was made in 1926. Several times, my daughters told them to please be careful. It was on four old wheels. Later, when we looked in the truck, they had shattered one of the legs completely, like it will no longer stand. They took a short break in their car and were gone about 15 minutes. They didn't say anything to us, so we didn't notice until one of my daughters saw them out in their car. About this time, Tim came back in and started complaining that he didn't feel good. He had the cold sweats. He was coming down with something and wouldn't be able to work past the three hour mark (as if he had done much work to begin with). I said, fine, move the boxes in the last bedroom to the truck, move three last pieces of furniture downstairs, and we'll call it done. Turns out they moved the boxes to our living room. I had to wrap the China cabinet with the other guy while Tim watched, and then they moved a small, unloaded chest freezer. They collected the agreed upon $450 for three hours of work and left. I contacted the owner to tell him there were problems, and he said he felt they had done their job. I am not even bothering to file a complaint to try to get any money for the damages to my dresser because I doubt they have the integrity to step up and own up to their mistake. Hired them to unload our moving truck. Showed up on time and worked all day. These young men are very polite and work hard. They do other work besides "moving" - hire them when you need help! Reasonably priced for 3 hard working young men. It is refreshing to find folks who are running thier own business and not afraid to get thier hands dirty. read more

Looking to move or help load or unload do NOT use JC ON THE MOVE, through Uhaul. They totally screwed us. I scheduled them 1.5 weeks before our move for 10:00-12:00 to just help us unload our Uhaul. My husband called the day before our move to confirm our date and time, everything seemed fine. They were a complete NO SHOW, NO CALL. We hired these guys because my husband had a knee replacement recently and I do not have the upper body strength to move some of the heavy stuff. They left us in a complete bind!!!! Since myself and my husband had to do the majority of it (a neighbor came and helped finally) he is now having problems with his knee that he just had done. SO PISSED! They did finally call us back around 11:30 (they were suppose to be there at 10:00) we had 2 things left on the truck and my husband offered them $100 to just get these pieces off the truck and they said no. read more
