For a long time I didn't much care for American Eagle, as I viewed them as more or less a…read moresecond-rate copy of Hollister Co, but recently on the advice of friends I've looked into them again and have been impressed overall. While Hollister takes their concept of style from parent-company Abercrombie's ethos mixed with a retro-surfer fashion sense, Am Eagle is more all-American, nearly Midwestern in their approach. You won't find that much real overlap in what types of styles the two stores carry. What I really like about Am Eagle is that they carry men's extra-small sizes in shirts and overall offer a lot more variety in sizes than most stores of their caliber. Also, their website allows you to look at multiple views of all products and to trace their products to see if a certain color and size is availible in a store near your ZIP code. This is such a nice feature, because it doesn't just show if your local store has it or not, but all the stores in a certain radias. So that cute shirt you want may not be availible at the Oaks Mall, but maybe Orlando and that's nice to know in case you'll be down there soon anyways. (Am I the only person who gives this much thought to shopping?!) I don't like Am Eagle's T-shirts or hoodies very much, but their button-up causal shirts are great and they often seem to have good seasonal sales. Several friends swear by their jeans and their girls' section looks impressive too. Also, I've found the sales staff to be very friendly yet not the least bit intrusive. I'm impressed with them now.

I don't recommend them for perfumes since the prices are high but sometimes they have testers or travel vials that are on sale. If you don't like something you can always bring it back.

There's clothing out there I do like better than Hollister: the bling of Morphine Generation, Howe, William Rast, Goldsign, and other haute-streetwear . . . but Hollister is great for basics that are enduring and attractive. Their prices can't be beat and their quality is very high with good choices for fabric that wears well and feels soft. I'm glad they're in my life. :)

I like Cato. They're not cutting-edge or uber-hip--most people don't even seem to realize that…read morethey exist. They don't sell designer clothes. They're trendy ... sorta. What they lack in fashion progression, though, they make up by having solid separates that can really pull an outfit together. Take, for example, one of my Christmas presents, exhibit A that fradulently calls itself a "jegging" but is really just denim-colored stretch pants with a rubber waistband that will simultaneously give me a circular rash and Mom Butt. I needed longer tops to cover up in the back. The stores in the mall let me down. I wasn't sure I'd be able to wear the pants in public, but voila, Cato to the rescue with a long, cowl-neck top, and a gorgeous gray sweater coverall! $42 for the pair, which is less than single items I saw elsewhere. The biggest complaint I have about this store is that the items can be pretty inconsistent--you can go from stuff that's fairly on trend one season to very odd selections in the next--and that the items on the mannequins are all severely clamped to give them an "hourglass" appearance. This can be pretty aggravating when you latch onto a dress that seemingly looks perfect, only to find that it's cut more like a postal mailing carton than a silhouette.
