So. We are on a roadtrip and got hungry and thirsty. We look on yelp. Not much in the area we were in rural pa at this point if the trip. The place looked old and dated from the exterior but we decided to stop in anyway. It was a lot dated inside but cool. The staff and owners were friendly and engaging. The drinks 2. Beers and 5. Hard seltzer on tap were cold and tasty. So we ordered some philly steak sandwiches and burgers. I would like to recommend the beer batter fries. All the food was really good. Four of us ate and had two drinks and it was about 40.!!!! If you're in the area pop in. The regulars there were welcoming and chatty. We had a great visit! read more

The food was outstanding and they had a bar and the service was good me and my family went and it's was a good experience I'd recommend this spot there specialty is there wing I had the honey bbq and I got to say it was good I'd recommend the dry rum because the other one is messy read more

We drove a hour to try out the bar it was highly recommended. We waited about a hour before we got our food. Prepare yourself for long waits because they only have one waitress in a Friday night. (Waitress was a really nice girl and totally praise her). What bugged me was watching the manager sit and drink beer while they are slammed and that poor waitress left like that so the manager could drink a few. Not cool at all! Other than poor business management (just my opinion) the food WAS delicious. I probably won't make the drive back but the food wasn't bad at all. An excerpt from my book going LOCAL! One day while traveling the back roads north of Black Moshannon State Park, I found myself in unfamiliar territory and hunger pangs calling to my attention. Just a few miles up the road, was a little tavern called Cooney's. Not an amazing façade by any means, but not seedy either. It was built like a combination gingerbread house and old time roadhouse saloon. The glowing neon sign for beer let me know they were open and I walked in. Immediately I knew I was going to like this place! It was clean, had great décor, and a really good vibe! A young woman greeted me from behind the bar and said I could sit in the bar area or the new dining room. Right from the start I could tell she was not your average barkeep. She worked the place like a seasoned pro and greeted each incoming patron by their first name. There was no wasted movement as she mixed drinks, poured beers, took orders for lunch and shuttled all the above out to her hungry and thirsty guests. Her enthusiasm for the menu items was amazing and I had her pegged as a newbie right away. I took a seat at a high table near the bar and thought about something to "wet" my appetite. I noticed Straub as a draught selection on the way in so when she came over to drop off a menu I ordered one. Looking over the menu, I was impressed with all the selection and there were. Too many to list so I just made note of the categories. Starters, French Fries (lots of varieties), Great Juicy Burgers, Sides, Donny's Wings, Cheesesteaks - Hoagies - Grinders, Sandwiches, Our Fish "Story," That's A Wrap, Fresh Made Salads, Extra's and Beverages. They even offer fixed price "Yummy" desserts (Man, I'm getting hungry). Opened in 1953 Cooney's was named after the owner who had retired as a high steel worker. Many steel workers would simply walk from beam to beam even at shear heights. Those with less nerve or more sense, whatever the case, would crawl griping the beams like a raccoon. Apparently this old guy was a crawler and garnished the nickname Cooney. Now after four changes of ownership it's still going strong and it's totally a family affair! The young woman I thought was a newbie because of her hard work and enthusiasm turned out to be one of the family. Actually she and her brother were the true owners but mom and dad were the ones who co-signed the loan so they could buy the place. Now Jan works the bar, her brother Donnie runs the kitchen, mom Carol is the sous chef and food buyer and dad "big D" (Don Sr.) runs errands, tends bar, is resident ambassador and a heck of a nice guy. The Yontosh family is very passionate and committed to what they're doing. Their goal is to keep Cooney's a viable and reliable stop for the working man, local and traveler. In fact Carol told me that their place was for the working man. "It's a workin' man's place" she said. "We serve good food and lots of it. We want our customers to leave here full and happy so they'll want to return." I like that philosophy. Jan told me as I enjoyed my Straub, that they take real pride in their food. It's fresh, never frozen, the meats are all butchered and bought locally, all produce is local when in season and they even use their own grown and neighbor grown produce. They stress consistency in their offerings and always strive to give their customers their very best. I asked Jan what the best thing on the menu was but I had to stop her because she recommended so much and my head was spinning and my mouth watering, so I ordered the Grilled Chicken Cesar Salad, wanting to go for something healthy. When it arrived I was glad I was hungry because it was huge! It was also delicious! The lettuce was fresh Romaine, the chicken grilled to perfection and Carol's homemade dressing was mmm, mmm, good! As mentioned earlier the décor here is great, very clean and comfortable. Even in the bar area they put out little vases with fresh flowers at each table (nothing against the Yontosh men but, you just can't beat a woman's touch). The whole family takes pride in the place and it shows. These folks are as down to earth as they come and it's all about family, community and damn good eats! So whether you ride, drive, walk, run or "crawl" to Cooney's just go! You'll be impressed by the down home elegance, fresh and well prepared foods and a family ownership and staff that care about you and want you to always be full, happy and coming back again and again. Stopped with a few buddies while riding through this neck of the woods and I learned that you can't judge a book by the cover! I anticipated it being a dive but was corrected once I walked in and was greeted by a nice lady behind the bar. Long story short. Good food. Try the "loaded fries" + pretty much any flavor wing sauce. We have only gone twice and both times during the day but I was warned that it can get busy in the evenings. This place is a nice drive from state college but it makes u for it through the great hospitality and the good food! read more

I come here on a few occasions and every time I visit the food is great, drinks are on point, and the service is always friendly and timely. The prices are better than most places I visit, and the laid back atmosphere encourages me to one back again. read more

This is my go to spot for dinner. Food is great and well priced ! I love the wings(wish they had teriyaki) the specials rock.. Taco Tuesday I had the taco salad last time I was there and it was GIGANTIC!! It was very filling, service is fast and friendly. Gotta give this place 5 stars! It has almost everything for a casual meal. They have appetizers galore, fries that just totally rock! Huge Hamburgers that are cooked perfectly. Their wings are huge and meaty! The sauce is thick and clings to the wing. They have at least 10 different types, but my favorite is the Mild. It is also a bar with a full liquor license, but the Resturant is separate so there is a family feel as well. This place gets people from State College coming, which is an hours drive, So you know there's SOMETHING good here! read more

Off the beaten path but worth the trip! Saved us from McDonald's on a 14 hour road trip. Good food for a great price!

This place was once a good place for dinner with the family. Not so much anymore. About a year ago we visited for dinner. The bartender was letting people in the bar get carried away. F this and f that. My 12 year old son learned some new words that day. Last week we decided to give it another chance and stopped in. It seems that the Marcellus gas workers that were being so mouthy last year are no longer working in the area. But now the food quality has gone downhill. Mediocre at best. read more

Any establishment that expect you to go up to the bar and introduce yourself so you can be waited on is not the kind of establishment you want to go to I prefer to be greeted by a waitress rather than to greet the waitress if you don't know this on your first trip there you have to learn quickly because otherwise you'll be waiting forever to be waited on horrible place I recommend key Largo's in Allport. read more

JC's Bar and Grill I was being helpful by handing Todd, the owner, a pool cue that lost a tip. He looked at it then snapped it right in half! What he didn't know was that it was a customer's pool cue worth $500! As he snapped it the owner of the cue yelled, "That's my cue not a house cue!". The owner of it was pissed! So Todd Batcho had to pay the owner of the cue $500 to replace it. So I guess Todd is gonna blame me for him having to pay for a pool cue that HE broke! Just because a tip falls off doesn't mean you break the cue! Nice going! We have other bars to go to so I'm not worried about it!!! read more

I give this place 5 stars because of the quality and friendliness Cooneys has to offer. When I lived out of town, I would brag to others about this tavern and how awesome it was. Every visit never disappoints me. The bar is always stocked, food is always grand, and the staff are at a super friendly level. Weekends are the busiest times and especially during any themed or seasonal parties. The garlic fries are to die for and will fill you up. read more

Very disappointed. We used to go to Cooneys on a weekly basis. In the past year this place has took a nose dive. Food quality has went down hill, prices have increased and apperently they didn't pay the heat bill to last time we were there11/14/15. It was 45 degrees in there and we could barely see what we were eating because there were about 2 lights on. Going from one of my favorites to "we won't be back".Food is way over priced. We should have known better when we walked in on a Saturday night and there was 5 people the entire establishment. read more

Originally being from the area, I used to eat at Cooney's all the time and loved the food, service, atmosphere and price. Something has changed since then and it's just not the same. We went for wings last evening and the restaurant was dead. After an hour of waiting for the food, I inquired about what the delay was. They actually brought food out for several people at the table, but not everyone's. Half the table was done eating and the other half hadn't been served. The waitress told us that they counted wrong and that the wings would be done in a few minutes. There was no communication about the error or the delay until I asked questions about why it was taking so long. I'm accustomed to a different type of restaurant standard where if errors are made and delays are going to occur that there is communication about if up front. Often times in these circumstances, free appetizers are offered while waiting for food to be delivered or at least an apology. It's quite disappointing, considering this used to be a place that I loved to go. I hope they do some serious digging and evaluation about how they serve customers or their business will continue to drop. It's just not booming like it used to and I understand why. Additionally, the cost of food is a lot higher than it used to be. If you were getting better service, I could understand this.. But unfortunately that's not the case. I'll take my business elsewhere when in town. read more
