I was in town visiting family when we swung by the Red Horse Tavern for dinner. A quaint spot with a classic look the Horse has friendly staff and a parking area that is easy to get in and out of. The recent menu has a great diversity of options ranging from salads, sandwiches, and entrees. I elected to go with the Birra ramen, not something I would expect to find at this establishment or in this neck of the woods. I was knocked back at how good it was. The broth had rich flavor and the right amount of spice, not enough to burn your mouth, but warm it up and tingle your lips. The beef was tender and cooked to perfection. First timers and overall the food was amazeballs and service was good. Parking was not the greatest, but what do you expect for 630 Friday evening. We started with fried pickles and they were good..I'm not much of a pickle guy. I had the old fashion burger with froes and a side salad. Burger rocked and the fries were amazing. The side salad was top notch, my favorite dressing orange vinaigrette. My wife had the french dip and loved it. Exciting place to eat! They have a unique menu with birria ramen and yellow pepper pasta with squash and burgers and more! I got the yellow pepper pasta which makes my mouth water thinking about it. While driving west we spotted the Red Horse Tavern and decided to give it a try. The menu was limited, but the Caribbean Jerk Salmon caught our eye and we were not disappointed! The salmon was excellent, the bed of sticky rice was wonderful, but the corn salad that was doused on the plate didn't seem to fit in with the other flavors. The service was excellent and the ambiance was fine too. I would have given 5 start but the corn salad, in my humble opinion, detracted from the other flavors. read more

Decided to take the drive out of state college and it was a very good decision. We tried the Brisket Grilled Cheese and it did not disappoint. Very cheesy and great flavor. Our server, Nova was fabulous and very entertaining. She took great care of us. We finished our meal with the Banoffee pie. Wow it was very good. We will be back to enjoy it again!! read more

We were attending Thon and wanted a nice birthday dinner. I had reservations for 6pm and got seated immediately. I would have loved a table near the fireplace but I didn't know to ask. The red horse tavern looks like a historic old building with an entrance for the tavern and an entrance for the restaurant. We had excellent, attentive service and started with the Korean barbecue ribs. It had a kick to the flavor and was accompanied by a slaw. It was delicious. Our entrees were the salmon and pork chop. Both were so good especially my green beans with shallots. To end this amazing meal was the highlight. Red Horse Tavern is known for their pies and they didn't disappoint. We had a banoffee and peanut butter slice. Both were generously sized and phenomenal. We can't wait to go back during our next trip to Penn State. read more

Disappointed. I tried this place based on Yelp reviews and was hopeful that it being further away from Penn State campus during family weekend would a mean a better experience. There were four tables at the restaurant that were full. Lots of empty seats. It was 8 pm and I had reservations and we arrived on time. We ordered a charcuterie board to start - waitress never put the order in. Bummed bc those are my daughter's favorite and this was the start to the Family Weekend. Waited a long time for drinks and the glass of wine that arrived wasn't even halfway full. It looked like a shot. Basically seemed like whatever was left in the bottle got poured into the glass Burger was burnt and didn't have the toppings requested. Waitress was rushed and ran off before we could even finish placing an order. I'd understand if the place was packed and mistakes happen- but there was hardly anyone there so I don't get it. There were only two dessert options - a Banoffee pie - which was super sweet but good to share and some dessert that was alcohol based as the waitress pointed out and wouldn't be served to anyone under 21. Food quality is excellent! Good enough to outweigh the loud shabby dining room, and small portions. I basically bought 2 entrees to get full but both were excellent. I would have liked to know the quinoa with broccoli that came with my salmon, was dressed in a spicy oil though. The beet and arugula salad with added shrimp was excellent too. read more

Went last night for the first time in a while. Just after the dinner crowd left. We were disappointed that they were out of the braised beef, ribs, and that hadn't been mentioned when they handed us the menus. Brisket grilled cheese sandwich was good, and the pretzel board was excellent as was the banaoffee pie. On the downside, the waitress was okay, but not very personable. It was mid-thirties outside but freezing inside the dining room. I like it cool, but I had a sweatshirt on and was almost uncomfortable. It was sad to see that the damaged ceiling tiles that were there are the last time we were there had still not been replaced. I will come back - I really want to try the braised beef ribs - but it would be nice to see them have a bit of climate control, fix the damage ceiling, and raise the level of hospitality to that of the food itself. read more

We were in the area and thought we would try it. Expectations were low based on the exterior, but the reviews were decent. I got the brisket grilled cheese with handcut fries (an upgrade) and my husband got the old fashioned burger with house made chips. Pleasantly surprised. Everything was delicious and fresh. For kicks, we tried a drink from the bar; very tasty. The dining room was very clean. The service was professional. Loved the decor, especially the pictures of pies on one wall and doors on another. Unfortunately, we were stuffed from our meals and had no room for the delicious-sounding pies. My only suggestion is to add homemade soups or chili in the Fall/Winter. Overall, a good experience. We came here for dinner on a Friday night and we loved this place! They have a great draft list for beer! We split the pretzel bread appetizer, then I had the French dip sandwich and it was INCREDIBLE. My wife had the mushroom ravioli, my sister had the squash tacos, and my mother in law had the harvest bowl. Everyone said their food was great. The server was attentive, nice, and efficient! Fantastic. We had a larger party so got to try a lot of things on the menu and it was all spectacular. The tavern stew was delicious, The pork chop, amazing! It was super comfortable, and Tara (our server) was the best!!! They had my wine, my strawberry salad with added grilled shrimp was perfect, hubs had the perfectly cooked and sauced pork chop (not overdone...and with an excellent sauce). Was visiting State College for a wedding and did not want to go to a chain restaurant for dinner. Searched Yelp and found the Red Horse Tavern. Waitress was very friendly, food was delicious, and came out in a timely manner. After the three hour drive and missing lunch, we were a tad bit hungry. For starters, we shared steak chimichurri tacos, street corn, and fiery chili garlic shrimp. They were all delicious. Next, I had the Harvest Bowl, my daughter had the Pittsburgh Black and Blue salad, and my grandson had the Carribean jerk salmon. Portions were the perfect size, and prices were fair. With the credit card companies charging ridiculous service charges these days, they do list on your receipt, the cash price, and the credit price, which is standard practice. If I happen to take another trip back to State College, we will definitely visit again. Red Horse is just off I-80 and had excellent reviews, especially recently as it's been taken over by new management. Don't let the name fool you. It's not a bar with food, it's a nice historic restaurant with a bar attached to it. We stopped for lunch and it was excellent - their fried greed tomatoes were excellent - included strawberries & cream. Wife had a great Reuben & I had a salmon with a unique mustard sauce that was delicious. We went here to celebrate our PSU grad but had a very disappointing experience. Sadly, the waitstaff is really bringing down what could've been a much better review. The fresh cut fries, burgers, salads, cooked veggies were very good!!!! But the server wasn't friendly, didn't come to get the drink order for a long time, messed up 2 of the orders, brought appetizer salads with the main meals and could've said something to the graduate sitting in her cap and gown. I had lunch today at the Red Horse Tavern with a friend who's vegetarian, so we went meatless. I had the Eggplant Bruschetta, which was amazing! It's not really a bruschetta, but more of an opened face fried eggplant sandwich. It was the best eggplant sandwich I've ever had. My friend had the Harvest Bowl, and it was really great, as well! We were both considering the roasted butternut squash salad, which sounded great too. I'm sure there meat sandwiches and entrees are great. The service was very friendly and the decor was charming.
