We went here for dinner a few night ago. The vibe is amazing, so Hamptons and chic. Almost felt as if we escaped the US, European elegance. The service is extremely kind and accommodating. We had a reservation for 8 inside, and they quickly moved us outside with no issue. Definitely recommend sitting outside. We ordered the spaghetti, Cacio e Pepe, chicken, burrata and peaches, market salad, and lobster and bean salad. All to share. The spaghetti and chicken were both amazing, would definitely recommend. The Cacio e Pepe ravioli and Market and lobster salads were all good but not to die for. I would skip on the burrata and peaches as the peaches were hard and the dish was semi flavorless. The whole experience is definitely more about the vibe than the small portion sizes of food. I would come again for a drink and apps which is the reason I gave 4 stars. read more

Went there last night for a birthday party. We sat at a large table next to the fireplace. The service is great. The ambience was terrific, and the food was outstanding. The hamburger was the best I've had the lamb pasta which was shared was delicious. They're using top level olive oil for the table with nice table bread shout out to the bar for the delicious cocktails. We were a party of nine and we had a great time. read more

This place had a lot of buzz over the summer, so we were happy to get a reservation for a celebratory dinner last night. We live nearby and it's always exciting when a new place comes to town. We were particularly looking forward to LDV because we love Scarpetta Beach in Montauk (same ownership), but it's a bit of a haul from East Hampton. Unfortunately, the whole experience left us flat. The room itself was lovely and our corner table was intimate and romantic. We started with a cocktail and the complementary bread basket was amazing. Our first course was a kale salad and a burrata with grilled peaches. The salad was great, if a little basic. The buratta itself was fine, but the peaches were rock-hard, unripe and uncooked; and whole thing sat in a dessert-sweet peach reduction. I'd had salad with delicious ripe peaches at Elaia Estiatorio in Bridgehampton just a few days earlier, so perhaps the comparison made it worse. This may be the first dish I've sent back in ten years. This is where things took a weird turn. Our server, while apologetic, seemed more concerned with having me try something else than with the dish being displeasing. A few minutes later, a gentleman in a suit appeared at our table and asked about the dish. He never introduced himself so I have no idea who he was, but he was completely unapologetic and vaguely confrontational...he did say he'd 'tell the kitchen' and it was taken off the bill. My main course was a squid ink linguine with crabmeat and urchin. The seafood was delicious, but the pasta was a homemade fettuccine (not linguine) that was so overcooked it was not 'twirlable.' My wife's dover sole was also slightly overcooked. Also a little strange that this place is walking distance to the Atlantic Ocean but all of the seafood appears to be flown in ‍. To be fair, we did not complain about our mains because we were having a nice evening and wanted to avoid any further conflict. And they weren't bad, just not particularly good. Dessert was delicious, a lemon granita (described as a sorbetto on the menu) with bits of lemon custard served in a hollow frozen lemon. This said, we got the distinct impression that our server was trying to talk us into a second dessert even after we told him we wanted to share one. I might even have considered it, but it involved fresh strawberries...after the peaches I was sceptical about any other fruit selected by the chef. We dine regularly at Saint Ambroeus just a mile or so down the road and tried this place for a change. Next time we are in the mood for la dolce vita in East Hampton we'll skip LDV and stick with our go-to. I'd have likely given it three stars were it not for the weird and unapologetic interaction around the burrata. read more

Cool new look and feel. Went today for lunch. Good service. Still felt like it was a new spot working out some kinks but overall very nice and welcoming staff. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! They charged us $200 for a reservation that we did NOT cancel before we were even able to show up for the reservation AND they booked a second reservation under Resy and canceled that one too even though we didn't make this reservation. They are not honest and made the mistake and should have done something to fix this other than say to call our credit card company. DO NOT GO HERE!! read more

I came here for dinner with my husband last Sunday over MLK weekend. We decided to stop in because we saw an ad in the Independent for the Sunday prix fixe and $1 oysters after 4pm. Our usual go-to for dollar oysters on Sundays is the Bell & Anchor in Sag Harbor, but we opted to give the Maidstone a try. When we were seated for our 6:45pm reservation, I asked the waiter about their dollar oyster special and was told that the offer was only from 3-6pm and only at the bar. I mentioned the ad I saw in the paper but he told us that information was wrong. We were a little disappointed in the false advertising but ordered a dozen oysters anyway since we were looking forward to it. The oysters were excellent (even if they were triple the price we were expecting!) and we really enjoyed the grilled octopus appetizer we shared. My husband also said his martini was made perfectly, which is a huge compliment coming from him! All in all, we enjoyed our dinner at the Maidstone but the bait and switch of the newspaper ad left a bad taste in our mouths. Our house is in East Hampton so I'm sure we'll be back at some point, but we'll make sure to get there before 6pm next time! read more

So, I've been coming here for over ten years and to be honest - ten years ago this place would have gotten flat out Five Stars! And we visited no less than once a week. This place was our go to and we miss it for what it was. Somewhere along the line they messed up the formula. First and foremost with the staff. In the beginning they had the best and most consistent staff in the Hampton's. They knew you when you walked in and knew what you wanted a how you wanted it. Now, the staff is never the same, they barely know the menu themselves much less know what I might like. The menu is a mess. In the beginning it was distinctly Scandinavian. The meatballs were a staple among other favorites. Now, most of the dishes that gave the place its brand are gone and now the menu is as random as chili and tacos. No seriously, chili and tacos are on the menu....like a dive bar might have. My advice is this - give it a try but keep your expectations low. It's clear they are trying to get back to that place but they keep missing the mark - but who knows maybe they will accidentally get it right some day - even a broken clock, amiwrong? read more

The Living Room is one of East Hampton's best kept secrets. Inconspicuously situated within the Maidstone Inn sits the living room. Of course, this isn't your ordinary living room with sofas, a drooling puppy and a large screen plasma tv -- this is a room for people who live for food. Seriously. This is the spot to head to after a long hard day of pretending to be a hamptons socialite (especially if you were at Ina Garten's house around the corner like me !). Snobbery aside, I've been here at least three times so far, with my most recent time being the most stellar. Service is always impeccable as all of the staff has personality. They joke, they schmooze and they bring you delicious food. The interior can be described as Swedish retro chic with a contemporary blend. The floral prints on the chairs could have been auntie mil's curtains in 1964. The wall paper is a greyish-purple hued floral print that somehow matches everything. The rest of the inn is full of contemporary patterns on the floors, the walls and the chairs that are juxtaposed well. Coming from someone who can't match an outfit if she tried, the decor is unique and looks like it was difficult to pull off! The menu, which comes out like a tabloid newspaper, is Scandinavian influenced with an eye for local, fresh and occasionally organic ingredients. I haven't seen the menu change in the past 9 months, however they always seem to offer specials as penance. The wine list is extensive with a generous selection of long island wines. Warning, they do push the wines a little bit on you (for good reason!). The Raraka is an absolute must try. It's like the love child of a Nassau county diner's hash browns and potato pancakes. Crispy on the edges & top, served with generous potions of creme fraiche and multi-colored tobiko. Who in their right might pairs potato pancakes with fish roe? A genius gastronomist, clearly! The sautéed seasonal forest mushrooms, toasted brioche and flavored with brandy appetizer is always pleasing. The baby mushrooms are cute and delicious and the sauce it's in is never overpowering. The Living Room charcuterie and cheese plate is pleasing to all, especially to those at the table who enjoy ham and duck sausage. It contains local cheeses (mecox dairy!) with tomato chutney on the side. Yum. The fettuccine is probably the only dish to be avoided on the menu. The Alfredo sauce is lackluster, needing a tad more cheese flavor and pepper. The vegetables it was served with were firm but unappealing to me. Every other entrée is amazing, such as the salmon, the sea bass and especially the pork tenderloin. It couldn't possibly be any moister and more flavorful. My boyfriend coerced me into trying some -- phenomenal! I almost wanted his dish more than mine.. and I'm not a fan of pork/red meat. Never, ever skip the desserts. You'll be sorry if you do. They seem to change them up every so often. Prices are undoubtedly "hamptons" influenced but not unreasonably expensive, especially for the quality. Go here, carnivores. Came here for Sunday morning tea during a weekend in East Hampton for a friend's bachelorette party. Being the nature of a bachelorette weekend, I was pretty damn hungover when we arrived, but it was nonetheless an amazing little place to have brunch. The Maidstone hotel and it's accompanying restaurant The Living Room are adorable and it's decor and atmosphere are super freaking cute. There's a huge outside yard area with art and trees and flowers and the inside of the dining area is very open. On a sunny warm weekend, it's a perfect place to be. The afternoon tea on the menu is perfect to split between 2 people with enough for everyone else at the table be able to sample a few things as well. The eggs benedict is also very popular and the meatballs looked amazing too. In contrast to the hangover, the Living Room was the most pleasant venue for Sunday morning. read more

Our party ordered two orders of the four jumbo shrimp. The specific line in the menu was "Jumbo Shrimp (4)". No doubt or ambiguity. Both orders arrived with three shrimp. When we asked, both the manager and the bartender stated that the shrimp were "really big", and that's why we only got three. When we pointed out that the menu clearly stated four jumbo shrimp, they laughed it off. No pro rata reduction of our bill, no apologies, no delivery of the fourth shrimp as stated on the menu. Love this place .. The chef is a genius.. Don't miss dining here. The corn soup with thai chili oil, smoked tomatoes, salty popcorn toppings is heaven. Baby Kale Caesar Salad is more than delicious and totally addicting. The rib eye steak is succulent and needs no knife its so tender. Risotto is seasonal and always perfect. Lobster grilled is juicy and moist Tarte Flambé is a good starter. Oysters are delectable. Service is impeccable. My go to place in the Hamptons. Feels like a magical home you get to dine in for the evening. You are never rushed and can lounge for hours in their porch, living room, dining room, parlor, or best cozy bar. Service was okay but extremely slow, some food came out cold and one incorrect. The tuna poke appetizer wasn't good, lacking taste, and rough. The side salsa it came with was the best part. The duck was very chewy and vainy and mostly unpleasant. The side veggies were too raw as well. The purée under the duck was enjoyable. The gnocchi we got for the table was really good. The room our party sat in has a back door that kept being opened so the majority of people in the room had to wear jackets the entire meal. P.S. Others in the party liked the chicken and steak. Disclaimer: My boyfriend and I came for a rehearsal dinner prior to my friends' wedding. As such, did not see the full menu and selected food from our pre-set menu. Also, we were told that they have had recent changes with management/chef over the past few weeks, and may still be working out some of the kinks that come with turnovers. That said, we had an enjoyable meal. I chose seared scallops for my appetizer, which were prepared elegantly and seasoned well. (I very much enjoyed this dish.) My boyfriend selected the fried calamari with an aioli dipping sauce. It was a lightly fried and a bit on the chewy side, not bad, but nothing to rave about either. For entrees we had sea bass and sliced ribeye with chimichurri respectively. My fish was cooked well and tasted great, although very slightly over-salted. It came with cooked spinach and roasted tomatoes. The tomatoes were done nicely but again, the spinach was slightly over-salted. The steak did not have much flavor, but the chimichurri was decent and had a nice subtle, not overwhelming, kick to it. It had a side of grilled asparagus, which was undercooked a bit. For dessert, I had a thin-mint chocolate tart, which was a dark chocolate dense mousse. It was very rich and I would have liked a bit more mint flavor with the chocolate. We also had a strawberry ­­­shortcake with vanilla ice cream, which was tasty, light and done well. It is difficult to rate the service as we were there as a large party and had a room to ourselves, but overall I would rate the experience as a 3.5/5. read more

We dined here with our furry baby on Sunday evening. We give it four (4) thumbs and two paws up! We loved it. The food was pretty good. Our fur baby loved the food we ordered for him off the Yappy Menu. He had a small bowl of white rice and the catch of the day fish (seared tuna). We (the humans) had gumbo - the shrimp were large and perfectly cooked (delicious but could use a bland foil such as a little rice), grilled artichokes (everyone apparently orders this dish), crab cakes and grilled duck among other items. The portions are generous. The wine list was really good. We ordered by the glass because we had to drive home. The server, Kenisha, was exceptionally good. The Maidstone allows dogs in the garden, bar and sun room areas. We dined in the sun room. It was nice to dine indoors with our dog for a change.... The decor was very pretty. I had a delicious house-made Manhattan at the bar and chose the duck breast for dinner absolutely delicious. The bartender was engaging very friendly as was the waitresses. Went to dinner last night to celebrate my 20th wedding anniversary. The manager new from my reservation that this was a special occasion. The atmosphere is very warm and cozy. Fireplace all over the place. We sat down and the waiter had to read the specials from his cheat sheet. Not what you would expect from a fine dining restaurant. The menu was tough but the specials sounded great. We ordered salad off the menu as well as a ravioli app. Quite good. Unfortunately that is where it ends. Our waiter completely neglected us all night. It was so bad, a couple sat down next to us and after 20 minutes of waiting for their drinks after having to flag down the waiter, they left. I ordered the Spicy tune rare and my wife order the special lamb chops well done and butterflied. When the runner brought over the food, mine was med well and hers was not butterflied so we sent back the food for correction, no big deal. Mine came back correct, but lamb chops, though butterflied were rare. Back to the kitchen. After another 10 minutes we had to flag down the waiter to where they were, by this time I had eaten half of my dinner. when it finally came back, the chops were cooked properly but it was missing the sauce and the ravioli side. Also the veggies were hard and crusty as these were from the original plate. Not once did the waiter ever come over to see how things were, to apologize or even top off our wine. Yes, we drank a nice bottle of wine that I poured myself. This guy should not have been waiting tables at Applebee's let a long here. When the check came, again no apology and no effort to make amends for the mistakes and lack of service. Needless to say I left him about a 5% tip which is more than he deserved. While speaking with the manager, Penelope (who I made my reservation with) all she did was apologize and said I hope this was not a reflection on the restaurant. Pretty lame. The waiter decided to come out and confront me, asking why I did not tell him to his face. My response was, where were you for me to have a conversation and the tip pretty much reflects the service. It came close to getting ugly. At any rate, if it were not for the lack of service and the unprofessional staff, the restaurant would have gotten much better marks. This is my first review. I waited a full day before posting to let my emotions settle down. As I reflect on the evening, it really was comical. Hopefully that waiter is back to bussing tables and others will have a much better experience. read more

My own little best-kept-secret: A little trick for those who are looking for a chill place to have a coffee meeting, go to The Living Room. Every time someone suggests meeting me for a tete-a-tete at Starbucks, I steer them here where half the place looks like someone's house in Provence with big benches, large low round tables and tons of knick knacks. They are always so surprised that such a precious place exists within the Maidstone (it is a restaurant within an inn). There's something really pretty and bright about the place. The eclectic decor really does look like someone's living room, hence the name with its traditional vintagey furnishings off-set by pop-art - the combination really makes me smile. I love the rocking chairs on the front porch which overlook the town pond - instant stress reliever. Best part is that the coffee is fantastic, no one rushes you, service is great (if a little haughty) and there's free WIFI. Perfect for coffee with a friend or a low-key meeting. A lot of people are turned off by the fact that The Living Room is a restaurant inside another business. Trust me, it's not the complementary breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express. Warning: The environment is high class and can be a little snobbish at times. Anyone can get eat peacefully here, but if you aren't comfortable with a high-class environment then this might not be the place for you. Some of the customers might be stuck up but ther service is really good. The restaurant has Scandinavian influences which offers a new experience for a lot of people. This includes both the menu and the decor. But don't worry, the menu isn't all Swedish food. There are lot of traditional American dishes available and a lot of classic Long Island fare as well. Negatives? Well, yeah, there is one big one. The food - although original in its own way - isn't actually that good. I pointed this out when I first went there with my family. My Dad told me that "this isn't the kind of restaurant you go to to eat" or something like that. Yikes, in a way. But the food isn't piss poor by any means. And yeah, it is more about the surroundings than the food to a lot of people who eat here so...go surroundings? I will say this much: It's a nice enough restaurant inside where you'll enjoy the experience. If you are going to eat here be warned: Bring your pocket book. It ain't cheap. read more

When we pulled up to the pkg lot i didn't know what to think. The property was lovely, almost too perfect for my liking. I thought purely based on the exterior that this place would be stuffy, overpriced and underwhelming. Boy was I wrong. We were the first guests to arrive for brunch on a Saturday morning at 12:30. The hostess gave us the option of sitting in 3 different rooms. We went for a two seater situated in front of the bar. The black chairs at the table sold me, Anthropologie like armchairs with cheerful pops of color, and my seat faced a happy turquoise wall. While small, the menu was perfect. We ordered Peconic oysters, savory Swedish pancakes w/fresh raspberries, ligonberry jam and fresh cream (these are mini, so don't expect a short stack), root salad with Scottish salmon, the most perfect French fries and for dessert, Swedish meatballs and whipped potatoes. For bevs, we opted for a bloody (spicy) and a green smoothie. All in $105 before tip. We spend that on brunch in Jersey City some days, so I was pleasantly surprised w/the value for the money, esp in the Hamptons. read more

Came here for dinner Friday of Labor day weekend because we luckily made a reservation about a month in advance. It is part of the boutique c/o Maidstone hotel which is decorated beautifully! From zebra rugs, teal paint, funky wallpaper, to chandeliers this place is unique! Incredible decor aside, I fell in love with their allegiance to the slow food movement and the selection of sustainable and local wines. The Living Room at the Maidstone Inn in East Hampton (my favorite town/village on Long Island) continues to keep its reign as what I consider, 1 of the top 2 restaurants East of Manhattan overall. Here's a recap of last night's happenings: ***DISCLAIMER: HAMPTONS RESTAURANT WEEK 2011 REVIEW*** Fermented Grape Juice: + 2009 Chad Pinot Noir. It was $46 and it was fantastic. I had them decant it tableside and had to have them chill it for 15 minutes on ice as it was TOO warm. Once it was brought down to ~58 degrees, it was fantastic. Foodstuffs: + Sautéed seasonal forest mushrooms, toasted brioche and flavored with brandy. This continues to be a MUST ORDER as an appetizer. It tastes buttery, amazing and succulent EVERY time we order it. Way to go on keeping this DAMN consistent every time. + Handcut fettuccine with wild mushroom bolognese, parmesan cheese and truffle oil. It has truffle, I HAD to order it, and it was fantastic. The fettucine was done perfectly al dente, the wild mushrooms were fabulous, the parmesan cheese was just enough and I was thoroughly happy with my dish. The other half of it is going to by my lunch today :) + Seared Atlantic salmon with local savoy cabbage, roast beets and mustard dill sauce. The salmon was done medium rare, perfectly, and it had a very crisp texture on the crust while the inside was soft and succulent. Nice work guys! The mustard on the side was awesome - the person who ordered this dish loved the mustard even though she doesn't like mustard at all. Once again, nice job folks. Ro who's one of the head folks running the restaurant is fantastic...this guy rocks!!! Make sure you ask for him and have him watch over your table. ALSO, I'd like to mention that the Living Room hasn't created a CUSTOM menu for Restaurant week NOR have they skimped out on the dishes. These guys serve you exactly what's on their regular daily a la carte menu and no corners are cut. The night we went here was the second week in August on a Thursday night and basically most of East Hampton was overrun with affluent vacationers. So this place ended up being a "zoo" when I was trying to get away for a romantic dinner with my first lady. The room is cozy and the tables are close together. We were wedged between a group of six that had just arrived from Manhattan and were clearly "sniffing" something during the drive. They were looking to refuel before hitting the clubs that night. The guys decided to pass on food altogether and just drink at the bar while their ladies ate alone. Classy! The other side was a 75 year old woman having dinner with her daughter and talking loud enough for people in Montauk to hear. Quite a dichotomy indeed. The bottom line is I don't recall much about the meal because it was so distracting. I had the rack of lamb and remember thinking it was pretty good. The service was only somewhat helpful but did little to extend themselves beyond dropping off the chow. Overall, I should probably give this place another shot at some point but probably won't. read more
