If I could give Dr. Graves negative stars, I would. She is the most rude, out of line, and unprofessional doctor I have ever had the unfortunate experience meeting with. It comes to no surprise that the other Google Review is a 1 star with a similar complaint. I went to my annual eye doctor appointment for a new contact prescription, as I've been doing since I was 8 years old. Unfortunately, the doctor I normally see did not have any appointments available and I had just run out of contacts. So, I opted for a virtual appointment, considering I don't have any issues with my eyes, aside from needing more contacts for the next year. I can assure you after my experience meeting virtually with Dr. Graves, I will never choose to see a virtual doctor again. The wonderful technician at my doctor's office did all of the imaging necessary for Dr. Graves to review in order to give me my new script for the year. But instead of doing so, she immediately diagnosed me with diabetes that she felt had been undiagnosed for "several years." Let me be very clear in saying, I am a healthy 31 year old woman, who is currently 6 months pregnant. I've had more blood workups in the last 4 years having my children and annual physicals. I am not naive to the fact that I could have gestational diabetes, but to say I have untreated diabetes and retinal bleeding was extremely aggressive and inappropriate. Needless to say, I became upset and actually walked out of the appointment due to her horrible bedside manner. Thankfully, the office rescheduled me to see the in-house doctor, who is AMAZING. They squeezed me in to their already full schedule just so the doctor could meet with me to review the images. She assured me there is NO EVIDENCE of retinal bleeding and I have nothing but healthy blood vessels in both eyes. She also let me know that 1. eye doctor's should never be the doctor to diagnose diabetes, nor should they even mutter the words before gaining an extensive amount of background knowledge on the patient's medical history. She told me there could be a multitude of reasons to see retinal bleeding, in particular, taking a few Advil right before imaging is done. Dr. Graves should be ashamed of herself for treating patients this way. She knows nothing about me and my medical history. She had no knowledge of my current pregnancy, yet still decided to open our appointment by telling me I had undiagnosed diabetes. Please, for the love of God, do not make an appointment with this woman. I rest my case. read more

I cant imagine the positive reviews being real here. Here's a real one though. This is absolutely the rudest Dr I have ever met and I'm from Brooklyn where they breed nasty. My child smiled at her and she snapped at him and proceeded to talk to me in a condensendig tone. When i called back on the 2nd day to let her know the medication she prescribed wasn't working. She told me to see someone else and get a 2nd opinion after spending $120. Any other dr wouldve prescribed something else. 3rd day today and my I is still itchy and red. Nothing changed. Hello, I just read the two reviews and I'm truly surprised. Dr. Graves saw me some years ago in an emergency, after hours situation, when I didn't even live in the area. I felt the care was exceptional, reasonably priced, and professional. Do know Dr. Graves has completed significant educational post-doc (no pun intended!) work that gives her capabilities and qualifications above and beyond what is merely required as a basic optometrist. I know she has also done significant volunteer work for the corrections dept. in NJ. I recommend Dr. Graves with neither hesitation nor reservation. I wish I could have met the eye doctor but the girl who answers the phone apparently makes all of the eye exam decisions for this office. I wanted a routine exam. That's it!! I was told by the "secretary" that I had to have all of these other things done that of course cost more money. I asked for Just a routine exam and said I would discuss anything else needed with the doctor. She refused to let me have a routine exam and was so nasty I walked out with nothing done. Waste of time. Don't waste your time like I wasted mine. In response to Dr. Graves you have been misinformed. When I called to make the appointment it was for a routine exam. I would have 100% taken advice given by a doctor not a receptionist. I would have paid whatever I needed to but I take my medical recommendations from doctors with degrees. I was recommended to this office from a friend who has been going for years. I arrived for my 9 am appointment and the office was empty so i started to walk through the attached store calling out "hello" when Dr. Graves came out and asked "what I was doing there?". When I told her I had an appointment she rudely said "then go to the waiting room!". There was no one in the waiting room which is why I looked around! I politely asked if I had an appointment, why was there no one in the reception are? She then said, "you can wait for my staff"! What a RUDE doctor, needless to say I left the office! Have to agree with the poor reviews. Condescending and deceitful practice. Went here because my usual office was closed, and I needed a prescription for antibiotic eye drops ASAP. They agreed to see me, after I made an appointment on the phone. Had about 10 min with the doctor where she commented that most PCPs don't know how to treat conjunctivitis properly (this is a self-limiting condition, not a life threatening illness), spoke to me as though I wasn't an HCP myself, attempted to convince me to do a full eye exam with her and use her for all my future services. When I walked out with my prescription, a staff member approached me with trepidation to tell me that there is a $70 charge because they have a "emergency visit fee". Something that wasn't mentioned on the phone whatsoever. When I tried to argue, she came out and said the receptionist must have mentioned it and perhaps it was missed somehow. Surprise fake fees is not how you entice people to switch to your practice. Edited because I forgot to mention that I paid the fee as my eye was freely leaking in the middle of a room full of other customers, and they managed to call me a week later and tell me that I never paid and I owed them said $70. Then she charged him $151 even though the Cigna insurance card specifically said that she cannot charge him anything at the visit. I don't typically do these and nor do I typically even follow what people say about these as I know most are motivated by anger, that said I feel I must. First I went because of the $85 eye exam listed on her web site as all I really wanted to do was to get my reading prescription adjusted as it had been a few years since I had my eyes tested and I'm 50 years old. Dr. Graves not only changed the price to $150 once I got there, her bedside manner left little to be desired. At this point I was already committed to the process so figure, let me just get my prescription filled and get out of there, only to have the woman tell me that I have Narrow Angle Glaucoma. Me not knowing anything about that, and really being blindsided by the whole thing I couldn't wait to get out of there. Of course she'd said that she was not completely done with me and had to do some more test (after already telling me that I have this and could go blind if not taken care of, not you might have this... you have this and need to get a surgery on your eyes.) After some conversations with a few of other people, (one an eye doctor), some research on the matter and realizing that this woman wasn't even qualified to make that diagnoses, I decided to go to a real doctor who did a thorough exam and cleared me of any such thing. Be forewarned this woman is irresponsible and in my opinion is out to milk you for every cent she can get from you. read more

Have been going to this optometrist for about 5 years...until 2 months ago. Even though I had vision coverage, they insisted on taking my "regular" medical insurance card & subsequently charged the company for some kind of "comprehensive" exam and cited a bogus diagnosis (dermatitis....I mentioned briefly that my skin was a little dry, so this constitutes a diagnosis of dermatitis??) while also charging me a $50 copay. I needed new glasses for reading, period, hence I went to the neighborhood optometrist. Should've been covered under my vision coverage (per my vision coverage provider), as it was with the next optometrist I visited (both "participate" with my vision coverage provider). Very disappointing experience, as they're a small, seemingly friendly, local place...did not expect this at all & under no circumstances would I recommend this office. PS: My vision coverage provider was so outraged by this, they reimbursed me the copay. UPDATE: I went to another Optometrist who took my VSP...no problem. I filed a complaint with the NJ Attorney General's Office Division of Optometry, and even though I strongly believe my case is cut and dry AND I had a witness, they told me there was not enough evidence to do anything about it!!! Same experience as Lisa W. although very friendly i am disappointed with their service and ethical manners. They were supposed to use VSP for the free visit and ended up billing my Health Insurance and collecting the copay for it. What i found annoying was that the doctor told me that everything was OK but then when asking why they were not using VSP i was told that i had Vitreous Posterior Detachment (VPD). now VPD manifests on people that are over 60 years old and in people that have very bad eight sight. needless to say that i don't meet those requirements so i was pretty upset. After calling my insurance and asking for a second opinion I went to a Fair Lawn Ophthalmologist (who had no problems in taking VSP) and voila no VPD; to top it off both doctors used the same routine. I thought it was really unprofessional and will definitely not go there again. read more

I recently had a very unpleasant exchange with the doctor and her office staff regarding my medical insurance payments and although at first I was told a $60 charge for refraction was "excused" as a courtesy, rather than return a duplicate payment of $25 and admit they were wrong, they later claimed that due to the recent economy,they were now charging ALL their patients a discounted rate for this service - it just so happened it was the same $ amount as the dispute we were having! Customer service at this office is non-existent. I was treated very badly and although I was absolutely right, I finally relented to avoid further stress the situation was causing me. Especially when I received a letter containing my medical records, wishing me a good life and literally "firing" me as a patient with a refund check in the amount of $25 which was the overpayment made in 2010!! BUT with a 2010 invoice in the amount of $60 enclosed with a handwritten note "due upon receipt" Obviously, I have good reason to believe this was made up to avoid returning my money . I mean what would be the reason to wait a full year, never bill for this service in over 5 years, and never inform your patientsof this change in policy?? So I'm kind of curious and would like to hear from other patients of Dr.Graves who were recently charged a special discount rate of $25 for a "refraction" a service which was not covered by their medical insurance. and who had not paid in the past but were now told that due to the economy, the charge would no longer be excused. Jeanine was an extreme snob during my eye exam. When I told her I have a certain condition she said how that's not normal for someone as young as me! When I asked her what I could do to take care of my eyes better after staring at my computer for 10 hours a day her response was well maybe if you got a higher position in the company then you wouldn't need to look at the computer all day. I felt VERY uncomfortable during my exam. I have my exam covered by VSP and after reading previous reviews I'm hoping she actually processes this right. My insurance changed and I needed to find a new eye doctor. I was given a recommendation to come to this office by a friend and while the doctor and staff are very nice, it's been like fighting tooth and nail to get the staff to send the proper paperwork to my insurance company. I've wasted so much of my own personal time making phone calls, sending emails, and providing information that should've come from this office to begin with because no one has followed through with anything. I had an appointment almost 4 months ago and not only did I wind up paying over $600 out-of-pocket for glasses and other "fees", I may now be responsible for over $300 because no one ever sent forms to my insurance company. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement and it makes me very leery about returning in the future. read more

Where do I start? First off, be prepared to wait forever in the waiting room. The last time I was there for 1 1/2 hrs. They obviously do not clean their machines properly because I got pink eye, which Dr Jeanine Graves said it was probably from handling new contacts. (really?) btw Dr Graves is extremely intrusive. She asked me WHY I was on certain medications prescribed by my Dr. That is really none of her business. The fact that I am on them is explanation enough. She had me waiting in the chair for a good 20 minutes while she was on a personal phone call giving advice on Suboxone. (which is a medication to help people get off of heroin, and other drugs) Okay! EXTREMELY unprofessional. And that goes for the rest of her staff. They are snotty and incompetent. They never seem to know what the heck is going on in the office. I had to call 3 times for them to send me my contact prescription (I had an online coupon) I am still waiting. Today I got off the phone with one of the girls in the office (the Hispanic one, not Denise) she had the balls to YELL at me on the phone because I asked for my eyeglass prescription PD. Which they didn't give me....It's MY prescription! The reason I needed this is because I had to go elsewhere to get a pair of vintage frames fitted for lenses which they told me they couldn't do. When I told her that I found an optician who would do the frames, she said "Oh, they are just after your money"..Really???? They can have my money if they do my frames! (no brainer there).....If anyone is after your money it is this place..... If you want to be treated like shit by a snobby Dr, and incompetent office staff, by all means go... Also, be prepared to have problems with your insurance...check, check, and check your bill..please. read more

I went for my appointment and was told they did not take my insurance. I went to Dr. Graves for the first time about six months ago, because she was recommended from a friend, and I could not be more unhappy with my experience. When I called to make an appointment, I said I recently moved to New Jersey and needed to get an updated contact prescription. I asked if I should bring anything to the appointment, and they said no. I gave them my insurance information and they said I was all set. They seemed very nice over the phone. When I got to the office, I had to wait at least a half hour to be seen. When I got to the exam room, Dr. Graves expressed great frustration that I did not bring in my old prescription, and exasperatedly proceeded to do my eye exam. I mentioned that my eyes were itchy from allergies, and she said my co-pay would go up a little bit in order to give me drops. (The office manager had told me on the phone that my co-pay for the visit would be $10, since I have good insurance.) I said it was fine if it went up by a little bit, because I needed the eye drops. Dr. Graves gave me new contacts and told me to wear them for a week, see if I like them, and call her if I wanted to try new ones, and she'd take care of it. She then wrote out a prescription for contacts and glasses (but left out the P.D. for glasses, which is necessary for any glasses purchase.) She also gave me a prescription for drops. I asked the office manager on my way out if I could look at some frames, because I would like to give them the business, and she showed me three frames and told me she didn't have time to show me more. She then handed me a bill for $150. I said I was very confused why I needed to pay $150, since I had originally been told my copay would be $10. She replied that my insurance doesn't cover contact fittings, so I had to pay out of pocket. I said I would like to discuss the costs with my insurance company before paying, and they said I had to pay at the time of the exam. I paid the $150 and walked out. After a few days, I decided I really did not like the contacts she gave me, as they were very uncomfortable, and called to see if I could come back to try a different type. They said it would be another $80. I said Dr. Graves had told me I should wear them for a week and come back if I didn't like them. I guess it was just her way of getting me out of the office so I would have to come back and pay again. I then called my old optometrist from my home state and asked them to send me a copy of my old prescription. It turns out Dr. Graves measured my eye wrong and wrote the wrong base curve on my prescription. That's why those contacts were so uncomfortable... So then I was left with both an unusable contact prescription and an unusable glasses prescription- for $150. It is now 5.5 months later, and I just received another bill for $82. They said my insurance company didn't cover any of the exam, so I had to pay everything out of pocket. I called my insurance company, and they said no claims had ever been processed through them. They also said that even if they would call Dr. Grave's office, since the exam was so long ago, they cannot force the office to process the claims at this point. I called Dr. Grave's office and said that the insurance company said no claims had been processed from them, and the response of the office manager was, "Well, even if we would have processed the claim, that insurance company doesn't cover any of what we did anyways." EXCUSE ME?! I understand that if my insurance doesn't cover a fitting, the doctor's office shouldn't have to eat the costs, but they should be upfront about the costs from the beginning. The office manager's response implies they knew from the beginning what my costs would be and simply lied about it. I have had many phone calls with both my insurance company and Dr. Grave's office to try to resolve this issue, but every time I call, they essentially hang up the phone on me. Needless to say, I will not be going back, and I would not recommend her to others. read more

i wish i had listened to some of these reviews before i went to see the dr initially. i did not have a good experience with her (very cold and bad attitude) and now I'm trying to order more contacts through 1800 contacts (now that i live overseas) and the dr declined the prescription. i suppose they want me to go back there to get a new prescription so they can collect more $ from me. even tho I'm headed back to us soon NO WAY will i go back there and please heed my warning. read more
