The moment I took the first bite, I was completely floored--the texture and flavor are just incredible. Walking in feels like stepping into a toaster oven.. instant regret in the form of heat. The woman behind the counter is nice enough, but she's on autopilot. Every donut you pick gets the same "Smart choice!" like you're on a game show with only wrong answers. We got half a dozen donuts. She wrapped each two pairs in a paper bag, No box. Just six lonely, plastic-wrapped sugar blobs. Then came the microwave. She microwaved the donuts, not sure why not a preference wish she would have asked. Got home, took a bite, and.... yikes. The maple and crumb ones basically gave up on life as soon as I touched them. Crumbled into sadness. Texture? Like damp bread with dreams. I wanted to like this place. I tried. Twice. I woke up with a donut craving, and decided to check this spot out, since it had decent reviews. I arrive to the shop, and it's empty. I don't think much of it, since it's a Sunday and 7-something am. I order a breakfast croissant for my boyfriend, and a breakfast bagel for myself, as well as a glazed donut. The man who helped me was quiet and to himself, which is fine since I don't like small talk. I just see him getting things together and using the microwave. I pay $18 (which seemed pricey, but I thought it would be worth it) and go home to enjoy breakfast. I get home and we get started on breakfast. OMG... wtf! My bagel is so hard and inedible; I bite into it and immediately spit it out. Terrible texture, no flavor. My boyfriend tries his croissant, not as hard as mine, but still stiff. He takes another bite and the cheese tastes rancid/ sour! *gags* I try the donut, it wasn't as disgusting as the sandwiches, but still pretty bad... and not to mention tiny! Here I am, $18 dollars out and still starving... surrounded by the smell of microwave in my house. Tip: Don't go to this donut shop! There's so many decent mom and pop shops... I was really excited to find this donut shop that offered vegan donuts. I read through all of the reviews on Yelp & Google and figured it was worth a try. I typically drive down Beach Blvd to Huntington Beach's The Donuttery to fulfill my late night sweet cravings. I wish I would have just stuck to my usual visit to HB. Upon arrival, the shop was easy to spot. Right across the street from Costco, next to a Subway with plentiful parking spots. I walk in and immediately get hit with extremely warm air; it is like a sauna walking into Jean's dingy Donut Shop. ***Red Flag*** The woman behind the counter greets me with a "Hello, long time no see!" even though it is my first visit. ***Red Flag*** My partner and I ask if the maple bar is vegan and she tells us all of the donuts are vegan. Our usual order at The Donuttery is a maple bar filled with vegan vanilla custard. We ask if she has vegan fillings and she tells us we are very smart for knowing about the secret donut fillings. ***Red Flag*** She says she has jelly and custard that is vegan. We ask if it is possible to get the maple bar filled with vegan custard. She grabs our maple bar, takes it to the back, and comes out with a maple bar, cut in half, filled with what we believe is custard. We ordered an apple fritter donut to try as well then she throws our filled maple bar donut in the microwave. ***RED FLAG*** The microwaves are as outdated as the shop. Maple bar comes out of the microwave and she tells us to try it, in front of her. It was a bit uncomfortable yet disgusting because the custard tasted sour. ***RED FLAG*** We felt we had to pretend to enjoy our bite while she threw our apple fritter donut in the microwave. She kept pushing us to order more donuts. We repeatedly told her we were sharing the two flavors, but she did not let us check out or pay. ***Red Flag*** We were forced to wait for her to microwave yet another donut we did not ask for and she adds it to our order. She claims it was free, but our total came out to the price of 3 donuts. We walked out feeling so uncomfortable about our experience since no one warned us in their reviews. Most people in their reviews claim/think she's being kind, but it was unsettling to watch the donuts be reheated in the microwave. We had a feeling these donuts were probably old. Our intuition was right. The custard was either expired or went bad when she microwaved it. We took 1 bite each and could not get ourselves to finish the donut. Also, NO MAPLE FLAVOR AT ALL in the maple bar. It was very odd. We instantly felt sick. The "free" donut was extremely dry and stale, absolutely not fresh. The apple fritter donut was okay, but the edges were burnt which led to an unpleasant aftertaste. Overall, if you've made it this far, I wish you good luck if you choose to try Jean's Donut Shop. I will happily take Beach Blvd all the way down to Huntington Beach for a solid vegan donut with vegan vanilla custard & fresh tasting ingredients at the Donuttery any day. read more

Where do I even begin? Let's start with Jean herself! She is quite literally the sweetest, kindest and most beautiful person ever!!! I live in Lancaster which is about 2 hours away and if I'm even remotely close (30 minutes or so away) I make the detour to come visit Jean! We always have a wonderful conversation and I leave having a better day just because I got to see and chat with Jean. She's like a great friend and a wonderful aunt all rolled in to one! Had never been here and the owner greeted me saying welcome back long time no see! which was odd but i thought maybe she was getting-me mixed up with someone else after reading some reviews i see she says this to everyone. she microwaved my apple fritter and my girlfriend's chocolate donut which made them chewy and hard im assuming the donuts were probably old. we also ordered a croissant sandwich and a bagel sandwich which she took them out from under the counter?? The shop looked dirty especially behind the counter. she kept asking us to order a drink and told us to pick one and kept asking if we wanted more donuts after we repeatedly declined. our total came out to $25! for two sandwiches and two donuts and she didnt even show us or tell us the price before handing us the card reader. She also put our donuts and sandwiches in an old box of costco olives, weird.
