It is rare that I feel so inspired by service or care that my first reaction is to want to write a review..but Dr. Perkins and his entire staff deserve such a review. Upon first entering the door we were greeted by professional, welcoming staff that made sure all of our paperwork was in order. The patient I was bringing in needed extensive dental work and Dr. Perkins generously offered to take her on as a patient. After a particularly difficult appointment, Dr. Perkins followed up with a personal phone call to reassure me that he was aware that the appointment was unusually difficult and addressed some unspoken questions I had. Talk about intuitive! Each of his staff members were courteous and encouraging. The greatest moment was today, when this young girl told me her mouth was still sore, from the latest extraction, but it was healing and she could never remember a time in her life when her teeth had been pain free. Dr. Perkins and his staff literally made a life changing difference. I would comfortably recommend this dental office to anyone. Told me I needed a root canal after scaring me with applying liquid nitrogen that caused pain. I trusted him at the time and had the canal. I later found out the endo he sent me to was his golf buddy. He tried the same tactic on my husband (with the nitrogen) and I stopped him from proceeding. My husband has not needed anything but a new filling and has that molar to this day. On the other hand, my root canal back molar had to be removed from the extreme deterioration and the pain it was causing. I despise Perkins for destroying a perfectly healthy molar. 12/28/22 Re.: FAKE review: 1. Maybe you do not play golf now but you did then; the endo you sent me to said you two met regularly. 2. Run- Arrogant dentist that will try to replace all of your fillings. I went 3 other dentists that told me I needed nothing done. When you don't agree with his plan of care, he gets confrontational because of his giant ego. I can see through your sales pitch Jeff Perkins and make my own decision how I want to proceed. Highest quality service from every member of the Team every time I come in for any type of dental work. Most recently, I received a few pocket fillings (because Dr Perkins prefers to do preventative work which means less money out of my pocket in the long run and much less pain and aggravation for me as well). Avoid this dentist if you have high blood pressure. I have anxiety at the dentist and my blood pressure goes up when there. I've seen my regular doctor about this and no medication was recommended because my blood pressure is normally fine. I am a bit overweight, which I feel often causes people to assume I'm unhealthy. Anyways, after getting all the x-rays and everything the dr. Perkins told me that my blood pressure was too high to get any treatments so now I have to start all over with a new dentist. Which is frustrating because I have a current tooth pain. Aside from this issue the dentist was kind and helpful. The treatments recommended were very expensive but I guess that's typical. read more

Being self employed without insurance, he always cut me a fair deal on pricing. I can't say enough good stuff about them. I had to have several crowns replaced from previous incompetent Dentists,, He has eliminated those old mercury fillings , making all my teeth work and feel like new. I have not seen a Dentist in 4 yrs,,, just now looking for someone in my area for a cleaning and exam, worried they may not be up to his standards.. Do not allow this guy to give you a dental implant. I fell to his sales pitch over 2 years ago and have been suffering from the results ever since. He used a large hammer to place the implants and it took 15 strong blows. Seriously, these were not taps. I felt that things were going wrong and he was panicking. This violent application resulted in a broken tooth which he installed anyway and a jaw injury resulting in jaw pain even now 2 years later. When the tooth sheered off and crumbled he heard it between my teeth and he laughingly said,"It's like chewing on broken glass." Yes, it was. The blows gave me intense headaches and vision issues for weeks. The broken tooth remains sharp and the placement is wrong. He applied the two back molar posts so close together that there was no room for the teeth to be centered on the posts. Imagine trying to place two golf balls on two tees placed right next to each other. This resulted in the tooth barely hanging onto the edge of the post and a large gap underneath. He called it "cantilevered." I call it a painful food trap that requires flossing after every meal or snack. I don't dare to bite hard food on that side because the tooth is so unstable and unsupported that I feel it will crack off. There was plenty of room to space them properly as they were the two back teeth, there was no reason to put them up against each other and too far forward like that. The posts could have easily been centered under each tooth, several dentists have since confirmed that. I also learned that the hammer technique was long ago replaced by a ratchet type of application, very gentle. So I guess that makes Dr. Perkins the "Fred Flintstone" of implant surgery. Avoid this guy for any services is my advice, but especially for his outdated implants. read more

My husband and I were new to the area, so we had to find a new dentist which was no small task. Recently, I had a less than 24 hr. cancellation of an appointment for the first time. I subsequently received a bill from Dr. Perkins that had not 1 but 2 cancellation fees for $75 each adding up to $150. When I called to ask why this was I first spoke to the receptionist and financial person who were professional/friendly as was I. I was told that the two fees were due to my seeing both the hygienist and the doctor. In my 54 years I'd never heard of anything like this. I had one appointment, so I would expect to have one cancellation fee. The financial person asked if I'd like to speak to the doctor and I said I would. As soon as Dr. Perkins got on the phone he began speaking over me and yelling, and stated that he had to have his chair empty! I find this surprising since I had to wait a long while for my appointment last I saw him and his appointment roster seems to be perpetually full and overbooked. The front office reception staff and hygienists were professional/friendly, but how this office received some of these reviews is beyond me. Dr. Perkins seems to lack empathic understanding and good communication with his patients; at least in mine and my husband's case. We will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

Terrible. Injection of novocaine hit nerve and lost the ability to taste anything but salt. He didn't even respond when I emailed him about this. After 18 MONTHS , the nerve damage has not diminished and I can still only taste salt. It's a horrible loss. He uses more novocaine than any dentist I have ever gone to. Buyer beware. read more

My experience with Dr Perkins was very strange. We were paying cash for our visit and when asked for private information, we refused. I asked what they needed it for and was told by the receptionist "because it is the law". I asked her to cite said law, she then disappeared. The law is on my side when it comes to private identifying information. Since it is not needed for treatment, nor billing I am well within my rights to refuse to provide it. The fact that the young receptionist lied and was subsequently embarrassed for being caught in her lie was her own affair. Later Dr. Perkins came out and asked why we would not provide said information. I asked why he needed it, to which he replied "to track payments". I replied that we were paying cash, so he did not need it. At this point he kicked me out of his office. Before being rudely thrown out of his office, I started reading their 3 page privacy policy. I admit not getting to complete the entire document but I clearly saw that they collect this information and sell it. Yup. Buyer beware. Refusing to treat someone who is paying cash and prefers to keep their personal information private is also suggestive of something more sinister. read more

I had a really mixed experience here. The dentist techs and front staff were awesome. Dr. Perkins himself was very complimentary, but I was unsure of the authenticity behind it. Despite the cool high-tech gadgets and friendly staff, I would HIGHLY recommend not going here. It was my first time seeing a new dentist after moving to a new place. I have only had one filling before and I'm in my late 20s. Dr. Perkins recommended that I had 8 "preventive" resin fillings and 1 cavity treatment filling done. I was told that the fissures in my molars could become cavities and it was best to have them sanded and filled with resin to prevent cavities. This totaled to 8 teeth worked on and $3400 worth of work done. After taxes it was around $2400 which is so expensive. The front office was kinda pushy about getting the work done immediately so my teeth wouldn't decay and urged I set up at least one dental appointment. Oddly enough, Dr.Perkins hardly looked at my teeth AND DIDN'T EVEN USE THAT DENTIST STICK TO POKE THE CAVITIES AND SEE IF THEY STUCK. He just went based off of peeking at them. I got THREE different opinions in Santa Cruz (one from a dental school, two from private clinics). They all recommended I only had that one cavity filled. They said I wasn't high risk due to dental history and the slow rate of the fissures. They all poked the fissures and none of them stuck. They all seemed confused on why one dentist would recommend having them all worked on. They all said preventive resins don't last forever and can cause cavities in the future so it wasn't "preventive" to fill them and could be detrimental. In the end, I compared the treatment plans from Dr.Perkins and the other dentists. Even comparing side by side for the one cavity, his price was about $100 more than the others ($400 vs 300). read more

I have not been to the dentist for 12 years and have had many operations to my gums My teeth are not the best and I'm scared of the dentist. BUT I have to say, these guys really take care of people. I felt so relaxed that I could literally fall asleep in the chair while they work on me In all honesty, it felt therapeutic (coming from someone that has bad teeth, and nothing touched in 12 years) I would ..::HIGHLY RECOMMEND::.. dr Perkins office. I was a patient here and thankfully now have a good dentist. This guy is a smoozer and will suck your wallet dry. If it's a crown that you need replaced don't go here. If it doesn't perfectly jibe with his computer reconstruction you are in trouble. He is so arrogant that he believes himself incapable of mistakes! This is my first yelp review, Congratulations Dr. P. I am so afraid of going to the dentist. I have been my whole life from a bad childhood experience. I have had many dentists in the past that just added to my fear. I switched to Dr. Perkins about 10 years ago and I think him and his staff are wonderful. I love this office! All of the girls are incredible & lovely. They all make me feel so welcomed when I come in. It's like walking into Cheers where everybody knows my name. Lynnet is my dental hygienist now and she does the most thorough cleaning I've ever had in my life. I actually have never had a cleaning like she does to me now. My old dentist used to do my cleanings and they were fast. Speed does not make for a thorough cleaning. I didn't know. Lynnet was gentle and caring. I was so comfortable I almost fell asleep. Before my cleaning I had a consult with Dr. Perkins and I was immediately at ease with his demeanor and humor. His examination was detailed and made perfect sense. Lucky for me, I did not need a lot of work done but he gave me the option of getting rid of the old mercury filling they used to use a lot in the 80's. The equipment he has made this procedure safe for all of us. That old mercury stuff is toxic. I'm so happy to have it gone. My teeth look so much better and are going to last forever now! read more

My wife and I have been patients for a couple of years and overall his work os acceptable although sometimes he runs behind schedule. However at my last appointment I overheard his front staff giggling about his persnoal life. My wife has also heard his receptionist tell another patient that the doctor was single and dating. Lucky girl that evening. I'm not comfortable bringing my family in for dental work here due to what I feel is unprofessionalism. I've been with Perkins for 5 yrs now.. I just did a Crown over a double-post root canal, COMBO'D with a much needed adjacent Wisdom tooth extraction today.. and it was sooo real- but I am happy to say that both Dr Perkins and his staff are so very professional, and VERY personable, and I made it!!! The technology there is unbeleivable, period. They take my insurance too (Anthem Blue Cross), and there's a nice big skylight to look out of in every room when they lay you back, it's very relaxing, you're looking right up a different Redwoods trunk in every seat in the house.. Give this guy a medal- a couple of 'here and there' procedures with Perkins, and the horrible neglect of my teeth in my youth has nearly been erased. Ps. Nothing but great things to say about this clinic! I drive 82 miles from San Francisco to come to this place, and they will have my continued loyalty. I used to have dreadful dental phobia, then I had to go through the experience of major dental work. When it all went smoothly and relatively pain-free with supportive and compassionate staff along the way, it has taken me far away from fear and into appreciation that I have found these wonderful professionals. Dr. Perkins is awesome. He has humor, pep, and a warm calm energy that put you at ease. He knows exactly what he's doing and executes it quickly and as pain-free as I've ever experienced. Nobody particularly enjoys getting calculus scraped off their teeth, but not too long ago I would have had tears streaming down my cheeks, and this time I was intermittently chatting with the hygienist about her adorable kids (embarrassed to forget her name, she was an absolute doll). As someone who fears the dentist, I have little to no joy about sitting in the dentist's chair. I have expressed, over and over, to Dr. Perkins that as long as I am numb with novocaine, I'll be okay. I have been going to Dr. Perkins for about 4 years, but find myself having to constantly remind him of my needs (warm water please!) and fears. During my last cleaning, a small cavity was noticed. Dr. Perkins decided that it was so small that I wouldn't need any novocaine. I asked, "Are you sure this isn't going to hurt? I don't mind getting a shot." "Oh no, it's going to just take a second." It turns out that it was much, much deeper than he thought, yet I had to endure getting drilled on WITHOUT novocaine. After I jumped two or three times, he finally gave me a little novocaine. But because he was already behind schedule, he didn't wait more than two minutes before starting to drill again. The pain was awful! I jumped again. He added more novocaine, didn't wait long enough, and I felt the pain again. FINALLY, after waiting the proper amount of time, he finished the filing. I have been putting up with the treatment for so many years because I never had time to change dentists and was afraid of worse treatment. Well, that was the final straw. I transferred all my records to a new dentist and I will not be going back. read more

Not only are they competent and up-to-date, but attentive and personable as well! They took the time to educate me on WHY they recommend doing things a certain way, citing latest research. They can use various alternative tools and techniques for cleaning depending on the patient's sensitivity/health, and they check in frequently as they're working to make sure I'm comfortable. And the hygienists who clean our teeth are also top quality (Jen and Ana). Dr. Perkins is a fine, highly professional and highly skilled dentist. He did a LOT of extensive work, both restorative and cosmetic, for me four years ago, and I've had regular cleanings since then. Initially he was very patient and comprehensive in describing his proposed treatment strategy and program. He did great work in restoring/replacing fillings, and installing veneers and crowns. His staff is very efficient and courteous. At one point I had a temporary crown come loose on a Saturday, and his assistant came in on an emergency basis and fixed me up.
