Being in the dentistry business for over 50 years, they are the kindest, most transparent, & professional dental providers you will meet. When you come in, you are greeted with a warm smile. They have invested a lot into their patients. Believe me, I have seen their backend operations. I heartily recommend them to anyone in the Scotts Valley/Santa Cruz region.

The dentists are holistic and caring; however, the office policies, staff, and financial practices…read morelack ethics and are misleading. I had an appointment here to get a treatment plan and quote for Invisalign, and I went in to get scanned; part of that included a CBCT scan, which apparently "cost" $800 a la carte. I say 'cost' because the practice owns the machine, and all they have to do is sit you in it and press the button. I was hesitant to even do the scan because I am claustrophobic, and I had perfectly good X-rays, but I was pressured into it. Once I got the results for the invisible aligners, I saw the cost and what it would break down to, and I wanted to wait a few months before starting treatment until I had more money to start the expensive monthly payments. However, I was told that if I waited, they would charge me over $800 for the scan! I was never told this beforehand and argued back and forth with Kim about it, and then ultimately was pressured to start the aligner treatment before I was ready to start it because they were threatening to charge me for the scan separately. I gave it another shot and was going to take my child here for an exam and cleaning. The day before the appointment, she was sick with a fever and got sent home from school in the morning, and of course I called to reschedule. They want 2 business days' notice, or they charge me $150. I'm sorry, what parent has 2 business days' notice before their kid suddenly comes down with something? I offered to bring her in anyway to avoid spending $700 on an exam, cleaning, X-rays, plus a $150 deposit in the future, which is an unrealistic amount of money to just be able to drop when you are a family with no dental insurance. I scheduled here because Santa Cruz Children's Dental wanted to charge me $800 per child for the same thing!!! They said no I can't bring her in sick, so they would charge me anyway, and then tried to act like it was a "credit" for next time. No, it's not a credit; it's a penalty. Absolutely unethical, unkind, and INSANE business practices. They charged me anyway, and I disputed the charge on my card. I will not be making further appointments here and will take my business elsewhere. They also recommended an invasive and expensive double JAW surgery for me, which, after seeking a second opinion from another holistic dentist, was completely unnecessary, as the clear aligner treatment alone is already doing the job of widening my palate and expanding my airway. This practice is questionable and ethically and morally wrong, given their financial and business practices. If you are an uber-wealthy Silicon Valley transplant, go ahead and go here, but for the middle-class families of Santa Cruz... stay far, far away. They act like $150 is ten dollars. No big deal, why are you upset? It's the dentist's time, after all. Not to mention that they have a mile-long waitlist for cleanings, are booked out months in advance, and have probably already filled it. The dentist's time and the money the practice makes are the bottom line here.

After a comprehensive exam, Dr. Gifford spent time providing me four incrementally more aggressive treatment options. I have never in my life had a dentist spend so much time with me. I used to love and swear by this dentist until I learned the truth. When I had to change insurance…read moreand get a new dentist, they were flabbergasted by how shoddy their work is. The nightguard that Dr. Kaur gave me had been so improper that it was damaging my teeth and causing the front teeth to chip and crack. I was actually asked if I had gotten this nightguard from a different country, that's how slapdash it was. When I came in to ask for a refund to at least get some kind of moral mea culpa from them (this nightguard costs $735ish before insurance, according to the receptionist, but replacing a tooth is easily ten times that much, so it would be a drop in the ocean compared to the damage done to my mouth) I kept getting the runaround about things being "subjective". Then when I wasn't dissuaded I got an appointment with the doctor to talk it over, which I assumed would just be them trying to convince me my new dentist is a con artist, doesn't know anything, etc. And lo and behold, no surprise that's exactly what the appointment was about. No refunds, and that I should consider myself lucky my mouth guard even lasted this long. Now instead of things being "subjective" it was preposterous and no dentist in their right mind would say such a thing. Yeah, I'm sure my board-certified TMJ specialist was just making it up, while the dentist who made the device in question has no room for doubt. I mean I'm pretty sure they even made sure to CYOA by asking to take a look at my mouthguard so they could do an official "reply from the owner" here with something like "Actually when you came in we proved your teeth were already broken and we didn't do anything wrong-" and try to make other people reading this think I'm not being accurate. They tried to say my current dentist must be a scammer for charging around $1100 for an occlusal guard and that must be why. But I called around town and most dentists are in the 1000 dollar ballpark for guards. The only ones who quoted me lower than 900 were quick and clear to point out "that's just a base price, we increase it if it's more complex, and it'll probably involve exams too". Oh and if that wasn't enough, Dr. Kaur insisted the receptionist had just been mistaken and that actually it was only $300, and that I should be counting myself lucky to have gotten such a good deal - as if I care about saving money when it means breaking my teeth. While this is mostly what I'm pissed off about today, in the last few years I got the same fillings done on my teeth again and again from these people, while the filling I got ages ago from my paleolithic-era dentist in Mountain View is still holding strong. So I'll ask again who the real scammer is. And just as a funny aside, while I was waiting in the office, there was a guy at the front desk who showed up for his appointment, only to find out it had been canceled, despite having confirmed it. It turns out that the front desk just relies entirely on the automated system with no verification, had somehow sent another confirmation to the wrong number, and canceled his appointment. Obviously this doesn't impact my own experience, but it does make one question why there are so many screwups in one office. In one day. At the same hour.

But then he asked why I came there and I explained that my spouse sees him. He then typed in her name and brought up her entire chart in front of me. Talked about how she was over due,ran through his findings, and treatment. He proceeded to go through her entire chart with me! Did he get any HIPAA training? I was shocked.
