The burial ceremony for my veteran husband was wonderful. We had his cremains buried here with full military honors. It was handled with precision and well organized by the staff. His headstone was placed earlier than expected and it is engraved with a personal message I was able to create. The grounds are expertly groomed year round and it is a beautiful place to visit. This benefit to our veterans and spouses is very special and I am grateful that my husband served so that we could be placed in such beautiful surroundings. One of the oldest national cemeteries is just south of St. Louis near Lemay and Interstate 255 heading into Illinois. Like all national cemeteries I have visited, JB is very peaceful and one of the greatest tributes to those who have served and died for our freedoms and country. What's very fascinating is the history of it, which I'll share a few random facts: -One of the most famous interments is Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck. Despite of the rules, national cemeteries do not allow people to lay items on graves. But people do it anyway on Jacks. -Eight Medal of Honor recipients are buried here. -Two Rock & Roll Hall of Famers are buried here: Dennis Edwards (who replaced David Ruffin) of the Temptations, and Johnnie Johnson, who is best known for his work with Chuck Berry -There are plenty of monuments and memorials here, all spread out through the cemetery. One is the Minnesota Memorial, which can also be seen in six other National Cemeteries. -The remains of the creator of the "Lassie" franchise are also buried here. Sure I'll do one more.... -Explorer/adventurer Zebulon Pike's infant child is buried in the old town part of the cemetery. I believe the name was unknown as well as the gender of the child (some sources say male, some say female). The child died at present-day Fort Bellefontaine Park back when it was a military site. Be sure to visit the Administration building at the entrance for any questions. There are computers where you can look up names, or get maps. Workers in the building will gladly assist you. You can also download the app on your phone to locate a grave. I hope I gave you plenty of reasons to visit this legendary place. Maybe you have a family member/friend/loved one buried here. Beautiful, peaceful, deeply respectful, and a reminder that all gave some but some gave all. There are graves here from every US War, from the American Revolution to the War in Afghanistan. This cemetery holds the remains of 1Lt Michael Blassie, USAF, who was interred in the Tomb of the Unknown soldiers from the Vietnam era, until he was identified by DNA testing of his remains. His family asked for him to be reinterred here and of course that request was granted. Pvt Richard Gentry, who is buried here, witnessed the surrender of General Cornwallis which ended the American Revolution. 1stSgt Alonzo Stokes of the USArmy 6th Cavalry earned his Medal of Honor at Wounded Knee. Deceptive. As you approach this cemetery it looks as though it would be an ordinary size. Don't be lulled. Drive or walk through the grounds, and that level ground becomes gentle slopes covered with the classic white headstones and with hundreds more covering the dips between those slopes. And the benches. Unique. Each national cemetery seems to have its own character, landmark, or look. Jefferson Barracks uniqueness might be found in its strategically placed benches along the perimeter of the sections. It's a thoughtful feature for family, friends, or other visitors seeking some contemplative time. The grounds are immaculate, even in the older sections. The grounds crew stays clear of the shelters while a service is held and there were several on the day I visited. The older section, which doesn't really seem that old, is distinguished by its few headstones that are not the standard white markers, but instead monuments to a person of note. The road leading to this section is very narrow, one lane only. It almost requires the visitor to stay alert and really see the history here. Refugee. For the first time in a visit to a national cemetery, I saw a headstones unlike others. A simple notation 'Refugee' amongst the "unknowns" and the knowns. All dated from the Civil War but were maintained in the same manner, laid out in the same way, and in the same precise formation. There was no other distinguishing feature and made me curious as to whether I had missed similar gravesites at other national cemeteries. Jefferson Barracks is a snapshot of history past and present. Took me a little bit to finally find my grandparents grave. But during that time as I drove down the rows I just felt the impact that all of these people have had in this world. I have an extended family member who has a loved one buried here. I am very impressed at how well kept the entire area is. Immaculate! I am very glad to see that those who have served our country, and their spouses are put to rest in such a nice place. I have been there on Memorial Day to put flowers on said grave. The place is packed, but they have ample staff to assist you in finding your loved one. Everyone is very polite. I took some photos that I will post of some tombstones. I excluded the names in the pictures, as my intent was to capture some inscriptions I found particularly moving. read more

Yes, I know reviewing a cemetery can come across as a bit weird but I really think this destination needs to be on the proverbial map. While I have been to burials here, that's not what I intend to bring attention to. This review is purely a tribute to how magnificent and unique Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery is. First off, it's huge. It's mind blowing how big it is. It's so large I question how I didn't know it existed until later in my life. And while it is a place of reverence, you can appreciate how well kept and perfectly designed it is. It reminds me of the Normandy, France memorials by it's sheer magnitude and beautiful design. If you have an appreciation for US history then you'll really enjoy visiting the cemetery. There are World War museums nearby next to Jefferson Barracks Park as well if you want to make a trip out of it. Within the grounds are plenty of memorials and monuments. Because it holds such historical significance, the cemetery is very welcoming to visitors. If you haven't been here it's worth the trip. I bet you'll be as awe-struck as I was. read more

Unfortunately, because of a funeral I recently visited Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery for the first time. As far as cemeteries go, this one is beautiful. It is an extremely important and honored cemetery where those who have served in the armed forces can be buried. As someone who is not a native of Missouri or Saint Louis, I wasn't aware of this iconic and significant piece of history that is just south of where I live. The funeral of my grandfather in-law, a decorated military doctor, was hosted by military service people who run the cemetery. They delivered a deeply meaningful memorial ceremony that demonstrated the honor of his life of service. The cemetery is strikingly scenic, well kept, and beautiful. There is Jefferson Barracks Park nearby, as well as other museums associated with its history. The historical significance of Jefferson Barracks to this region is difficult to overstate. I felt fortunate to be there with my family and take in the beauty of these sacred grounds. I look forward to returning to remember Dr. Whit for years to come. read more

I use Jefferson Barracks VA hospital here weekly. This is a national cemetery just to the west of the hospital grounds. Most veterans will understand what this means. However, if you are somewhat unfamiliar, that's ok. Try thinking Arlington. Extremely dignified. White headstones in perfect symmetry and alignment. There is one word to describe this treasure. My husband is writing a book on historic cemeteries, so it was our dream to visit this cemetery when we moved to Missouri. Coming from SoCal, there are a couple of standout military cemeteries that are quite beautiful in their own right. The best, of course, is Ft. Rosecrans, which stands on a hill and overlooks the Pacific Ocean on one side and San Diego bay on the other. Unfortunately, all our cemeteries are fighting a losing battle with the drought and many cemeteries are dried up and the dirt is winning the battle. There are trees, palm trees and eucalyptus, but nothing like the trees at this cemetery. It seems odd to say that a place that is the final resting place for so many men and women is as peaceful as heaven might be, but it is. Breathtakingly green and lush, the day we were there, the grounds were being manicured and the roads were being cleaned. I have been to many cemeteries, including Arlington, but the size of this cemetery will take your breath away. It is miles and miles of white marble headstones as far as the eye can see. Rolling hills, gorgeous trees, thick green lawns, it is truly a beautiful place. The roads, as they are in all cemeteries are pretty narrow but become so narrow near the back of the cemetery, that only one car will fit. There are very few benches to sit on, so if you are visiting someone, you may want to bring a chair. Interspersed amongst the white headstones, there are huge areas with inground headstones and then there will be the odd obelisk or big box style of the headstone. One our way out we stopped at the office so I could ask questions and this is what the friendly and very informative young man told us. Apparently at some time in the past, some general decided that he liked the look of the inground headstones more than the white marble, so our military men and women were buried like that, until someone else cam along and changed it back. There are also huge, sometimes flat, monuments of stone with several names on it and a description of who is buried there and what mission took place. I again asked Joe in the office why so many people were buried together, he told us that some families decided that if their loved ones had died on a mission with their team, they wanted them to all be buried together. Sometimes, there wasn't enough of each military members body, so everyone is truly mixed together. I asked my daughter, an Afghanistan veteran if she would want that and she agreed that if she and her team might die together, she would want to be with them. There are rows and rows, too many to count of headstones with "Uknown Soldier ~ Civil War" which breaks my heart. As the mother of a former Marine and an Army Recruiter, it saddens me to think of all the families waiting back home for their beloved family members who never made it back home. TIPS IF YOU'RE VISITING FOR THE FIRST TIME: Stop at the office on your way in, there are maps and if Joe is working, he can point you to the back of the cemetery, the oldest part. Bring water and there is a super clean restroom in that same building. If there is a funeral, please be respectful and go around the event...there is plenty of room to do that. Stop at the Civil War Museum on your way out if you have time, there is a map in the office and the staff will be happy to direct you. Take your time and revel in the peaceful beauty of this hallowed place. read more

Finally, got an answer! They were wonderful. Well, except for who ever answers the door if someone answer at all. Let me explain. When I finally got the clarification and set everything up for the service, I travelled from Texas to Missouri. One the date assigned I went up to the main building as told and it was closed with a notification that they would not be open due to Covid-19. So, I knocked, no answer. Then I walked around the building found another door a woman walked out the door but said nothing to me. I walked back around and finally found a man who told me to knock on the door in front. So, I went back to the door another man was there and knocked. A woman answered and they talked, he left and before the woman turned to go back in the building I said excuse me and told her what I was there for at the time I was supposed to be there. She said wait in the car and someone will be with you. These were not the same instructions I got over the phone the week before. It was all very confusing and stressful for a widow to have to go through. However, the man that came to officiate at the service was very kind and sensitive. He was very helpful to me and the rest of the family and everything went very smoothly after he came. read more
