I had to visit the office to pay for a reserved personalized plate I had ordered online. One thing to know is that once you reserve a personalized plate online, you have five business days to go into the office and pay the associated fee. Otherwise, the plate will no longer be held for you. Something helpful I learned from the dealership where I purchased my car is that if you have a vehicle that was declared a total loss, you can bring the declaration letter along with the necessary documentation and receive a credit toward the registration and tag for your new vehicle. In my case, I received about a $40 credit, which was a nice surprise. The office was fairly busy when I arrived, but the line was moving steadily and efficiently. Shout out to JCCH for making the absentee in person voting process go smoothly. I heard all the horror stories of being in line for hours , so I was determined to not fall victim to this. I was in line a little after 7 am and was completely done in like an hour in a half with the entire process. The city of Birmingham(Jefferson County) certainly is made sure covid / cdc regulations were being enforced. I definitely felt safe while exercising my right to vote. Upon leaving , I had to use the restroom. The city employee was so kind to open the employee restroom since the public restroom was out of commission. No one enjoys going to the courthouse. Except for maybe when you're picking up your marriage license. But even then, there's a wait for whatever you want to do. I made the smart decision to visit the tax assessors office the day before Thanksgiving. I figured that most people would be doing family things and not worried about getting homestead exemption! :) Upon arriving at the right office, I was prompted to pull a number. But the machine didn't work... and no one bothered to tell me that the machine didn't work so I just took a seat. There were three people ahead of me, so the line didn't take long.... but when I left... there were probably 10! No idea how they were keeping track of who came when. On Tuesday I went to get my car registered. I moved here from California three weeks ago. My case was complicated due to having a lien with Honda financial since my car is only a year old. That means no title. I also can't find my recent registration due to the move. Amiyah Reynolds was so kind, and so so patient. She showed me how to pull up my account on my phone and email the lien to her email so she could print it right there. She also had me transfer my current car insurance to the state of Alabama, it was current and the transfer saved me money. After having been gone from Birmingham for a few years now, I remember this place being a bit somber. This obviously must have changed, and the service has taken a total 180. Most people I've talked to typically haven't had good things to say about this place, however my experience was a rather good one. Could there be a few improvements made? Of course, however the building is very well kept, and most of the staff were very helpful. As with anything, I'm one of those that truly believes in giving good as well a bad experiences a review. With all this said, my experience was obviously a good one, and thought I'd write about it. In my opinion, hiring a little diversity could further help improve this place. The lady that helped me wasn't from Alabama, and she could immediately relate to the headaches of relocation. This in part made my experience that much easier, and the advice given much appreciated. I was prepared to wait. I brought work to do and a magazine to read, but I never got a chance to get them out. I was greeted by a pleasant gentleman who pointed me in the right direction for a driver's license renewal. I stepped up with no wait and had the transaction completed within about 5 minutes. If you are one of the unlucky souls that happens to reside in Jefferson County, you have probably experience the hell that is known as getting a new car tag. And it.is.hell. For real. Mr. Petelos, Can we please stop focusing on Cooper Green, and get a move on it and start reopening satellite offices for car stuffs. Waiting in line for hours, outside, in the freezing cold, because the line inside is too long, has got to go. You want to know why the line is so long? Because your car tag people took 30 minutes just to get us a new tag. 30 minutes. Why did Mr Car Tag Man take 30 minutes? Because there is no sense of urgency whatsoever. It should not take a person one whole minute to pick up a pen. Is his hand super heavy? It should not take a person 10 minutes to go across the room and pick up a printed piece of paper. Why did he take ten minutes? Because he started chit chatting with the lady next to him. A Process that could have taken 5-7 minutes, took 30 minutes. Yes. I counted. So, all you lucky bastards that get to have a new tag. THIS is why it takes 4, yes 4 GD hours just to get a new car tag. But I guess Cooper Green's fight to stay alive is worth it.
