He's the best orthopedic around. He fixed my shoulder and my meniscus and love to have anything looking at my arthritis in my knee

I had an 18 year old knee injury. If I twisted my knee in a certain direction, my knee would lock and I would not be able to put weight on it. I went to 4 different sports physicians and Dr. Carter was the only one who was able to identify and fix the issue. This has changed my life. Long overdue review but wanted to write this for awhile. Want to share the bad experience my husband went through with this doctor. In summary this doctor performed my husbands 2nd knee surgery. After doing an extensive search for a local Workmen's comp knee specialist, he found Dr. Carter. At first he showed interest in my husbands case and seemed to be concerned over his lack of recovery from his first surgery. Right away he told my husband that he required another surgery and physical therapy. Then Covid hit! Surgery was delayed but Dr. Carter was able to get done and approved by WC. Due to Covid restrictions his f/ups were through Zoom but once he was able to go back to the office he realized that Dr. Carter and his staff weren't wearing a mask as it was required at the time. My husband feeling uneasy with him not wearing one, asked (politely) if he could wear one, especially since I have an autoimmune illness and he just wanted to protect me from getting Covid. Dr. Carter disagreed and said that he wasn't going to wear one and was not going to force his staff to wear one either. He then proceeded to tell him that he was releasing him to full duty without any restrictions and that he didn't need to see him anymore. My husband was shocked and asked him why he was doing that and if he was upset over the mask? He explained to Dr Carter that he was still in a lot of pain, and was not ready yet, especially full duty with no restrictions. He said it was cruel and not fair for him to completely release him and he hadn't even done an MRI to see if the meniscus was healing. At the time he wasn't able to put any pressure on the knee and was using a cane for support. Of course my husband contacted WC and surprisingly, they got upset and filed a complaint against the doctor. They sent my husband for a 2nd opinion and what do you know? The surgery didn't take and he now had another tear that required a 3rd surgery. Luckily his new surgeon is professional and has great bedside manners. The unfortunate part during the transition from doctors was the interruption in pay that doctor Carter caused. Because he released him at 100%. His WC case closed and he had to reopen it again. If you ever had to go through WC you know how much pain in the rear it is to get it. We had to use our savings for a couple months till WC opened the case up again. It was a nightmare. Luckily his WC worker and his union rep helped get it going. As for DR. Carter I wish we would of gotten an attorney and sued him for negligence and malpractice but my husband just didn't want anything to do with him. So now im writing this review to just spread awareness that to be cautious of this doctor. read more

Had a full thickness tear of rotator cuff. Dr. Carter repaired it, checked mobility immediately post op, and fixed a frozen shoulder I didn't know I had all before the anesthesia wore off. Gave me photos of before and after repair. So glad I did my surgery with him. Efficient office staff too. Excellent care every step of the way! read more

Dr. Carter was attentive, knowledgeable and provided excellent care. I broke my arm on a Saturday and was seen in his office right away. The office staff were always polite, called to remind me of appointments and made last minute changes if I had a conflict. Dr. Carter followed my course of care, treatment and physical therapy very closely. He reviewed X-rays with me at each visit, answered all my questions and let me know what to expect as I went through the stages of a healing injury. Dr. Carter is the most unprofessional doctor I have ever seen. Not to mention angry and volatile in his demeanor. I was referred to Jefferey Carter several months ago. From the very beginning when I encountered him, he was irritable in his manner toward me and confrontational. I failed to fill out his medical questionnaire to his satisfaction and he was very volatile and accusatory toward me. He actually had the gall to say to me, "Are you colored blind"? This is because I missed a section to fill in. The thing is, I am colored blind. I did not see the highlighted area that was needed to complete. Needless to say, there was no examination at this point as I was done being treated in such a horrific manner. However, regardless of this fact, this doctor completed a report for a return to work with no restrictions. I have never encountered such a horrible experience with any doctor and only can surmise that this man's attitude toward me was because of the fact that I am a woman and of a minority. read more

Dr. Carter did knee replacement on my knees. They work just fine. I've backpacked many miles since then. He's the only surgeon I trust for myself and my family. I live in Stockton but continue to drive to Monterey when I need an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Carter is great! read more

Extremely inattentive, and genuinely just not knowledgeable in his field. I've never heard a doctor say "I don't know" as much as him. There are good doctors who genuinely care about their patients and are interested in helping them heal - and then there are doctor's like Carter who runs his practice like a money mill. If you likely don't need surgery he will dismiss you and your pain while teetering in and out of the doorway for the whole 5 minutes he'll graciously spend with you. Come to find out he's known around the block of medical professionals for his lack of care for patients and blatant hunger for money. Also the type who refuses to wear a mask even when requested to do so by a patient. Stay far away, and read reviews of other doctors. Hoping this review will encourage others in pain and going through a tough time to look into different providers who will take the time to care about the patient and their recovery, not just the size of the pay check they'll receive. read more

Do NOT recommend. Made my father go through a meniscus surgery knowing he needed a Total knee arthroplasty. My dad wanted to avoid having to go under 2 surgeries. Dr Carter did enforce that he would need a total knee reconstruction in order to be good, that the meniscus surgery would MAYBE help him MAYBE not but he would only do what "insurance" would cover. We mentioned to him that if he did need to have a total knee replacement we were willing to pay out of pocket in order to get what was needed and avoiding another second surgery if the insurance was not to cover it. We got a call from his staff saying they had approved everything( did not specify what) but everything to us meant the total knee replacement. so we went in on surgery day thinking he was getting a total knee replacement and told my father once he was gonna go under anesthesia that he was only gonna fix the meniscus tear because that was what the insurance was going to cover only ! I call this MAL PRACTICE because it was too late for my dad to get out of that bed and did a diffrent surgery than what was actually needed . One year later my dad got a state evaluation and the dr agreed that the surgery Dr Carter did was NOT beneficial and my dad now has to go under another surgery for the total knee replacement. DO not come here or make sure you ask for a second opinion make sure to ask questions! He gets bothered when being asked many questions and wanting reassurance read more

I did my homework! I got two recommendations for knee surgery (meniscus tear) and I am so happy I decided to go with Dr. Carter. My knee feels great, I also did some physical therapy to help with strengthening the knee. Without hesitation I would use Dr. Carter again for my injury. Masked, I went to see Dr. Carter on Thursday. None of his office staff wore masks. When I was walked back to the exam room I asked if Dr. Carter would wear a mask and was told by his medical assistant that he wouldn't unless masks were mandated. After getting my co-pay back, I left. read more

My husband was a patient of Dr. Carter's starting in May. At first we thought he was great. Dr. Carter saw him once a month and assured us my husband's broken leg was healing. September was our 2nd to the last visit where Dr. Carter said everything looks good. He then went on to say we did not need to come every month but assured us he would sign doctor notes, disability papers, whatever we needed until my husband felt he could do his 10 hr. shift as a mechanic. Well come December, over 3 months since Dr. Carter saw my husband. Dr. Carter insisted on seeing my husband in his office because his leg should be healed. He had my husband do x rays and when he saw him in person he said it's healed it is time to go back to work. Trust me I will be the 1st person to tell my husband he is being a wimp but I saw (see) the pain he is in just walking around the block and Dr. Carter thinks he can do a 10 hour shift as a mechanic? So we got a 2nd opinion. Our new doctor saw the same x rays Dr. Carter saw but noticed a bone spur. Our new doctor now has a plan to get my husband back to work when Dr. Cater told us physical therapy was a waste of time and money. Do not go to Dr. Carter's office although I did really like his staff. Also if you are COVID scared Dr. Carter does not wear a mask. read more

Dr. Carter is AMAZING - He performed my rotator cuff surgery on Sept 2017 and i was released March 2018. I can't even remember the pain and limited use - because now I am PAIN FREE and have full range of motion. I highly recommend Dr. Carter and his team! read more

My whole family and I have been seeing Dr. Carter for years now. He did my mom's shoulder surgery and my dad's partial knee replacement. This doctor does not care and won't listen to any issues you have after surgery. I got shoulder surgery last year and still have a lot of pain. When I let him know he got angry, wouldn't listen, and walked out of the room. Post surgery care was really bad and overall a bad experience. read more

I would not recommend this office. The staff did not contact or get approval for my surgery from my insurance company. I had to do that myself. Dr. Carter would not prescribe pain relivers when I really needed it. Staff charged me for a 3 month follow up visit when I was told it would be included in the cost of the surgery. Luckily, I was advised to reach out to a group of surgeons out of Salinas and it was the best decision that I made. Do your PT. He may have done thousands but now he is just buying his own private island. That being said, he did my shoulder and 1 knee and did a great job. That really is all that matters. Don't trust surgery center personnel when they say the ice machine will not cost you any out of pocket, vendor now trying to collect money for free machine.. Great machine but front office at surgery center lied......Just saying, go in eyes open. Pain in shoulder almost gone , 80% motion, 60% strength at 5 months. Do your PT. read more

Dr. Carter is highly qualified. He keenly listens and observes; he doesn't jump to surgery but instead proceeds in a logical step-wise fashion. Some people have said that he doesn't care about the pain one feels and doesn't prescribe pain meds. when they're needed. I have found just the opposite. Rotator cuff surgery, which is what I've gone through for both shoulders is no walk in the park - You WILL FEEL PAIN no matter who performs your surgery and vicodin is a powerful controlled substance. I would definitely recommend Dr. Carter for shoulder injuries. read more

I've been going to Dr. Carter for a couple years now & have received nothing but the best care. Before seeing Dr. Carter another doctor had told me I needed surgery to correct my shoulder problem so I decided to get a second opinion. Dr. Carter reviewed my MRI & had me do some physical therapy. I'm my shoulder is back to 100% without surgery. He staff is very accommodating working around my schedule & wait times to see the doctor were very quick. He told me "no one should have to wait for anybody" Agreed, he practices what he preaches.
