Then when taken to the back, wearing a mask, but becoz I had a mild dry throat and coughed, the tech kept asking me if I had a fever ("we have a lot of patients. We will need to kick you out if you have a fever" Hint: If that is a real concern, then add it to your intake sheet. FYI, I don't have a fever. Have been fully vaccinated, and was wearing a mask. But she never bothered to ask). Finally, after never having been told by a recent optician or other eye doctors that I may have a macular issue, the Dr. suggested I could benefit from some laser treatment. (I witnessed enough in this office to know I would never let them go near me w/a laser. Wonder how many hapless patients fall for this). I am very fearful for patients who go to this office.

Dr. Katzman recommended that I NOT get an Extended Depth Of Field (i.e. EDOF) intra-ocular lens SOLEY because I had Lasik eye surgery in the past, without even questioning whether my Lasik surgery might have been a very minor correction, which it was. He could have simply asked for my pre-lasik prescription and I could have provided it. Two prominent Los Angeles eye surgeons DISAGREED with Dr. Katzman, because they asked me for my pre-Lasik prescription which showed that it was a very MINOR correction, which does NOT contra-indicate an EDOF lens. Also, when I asked him whether the VA would pay everything for my surgery, Dr. Katzman said with a big inappropriate smile that I would have to pay an additional $6000 beyond what the VA will pay for a surgery on just one eye. Also, I was astonished that Dr. Katzman THEN spent maybe one third of my appointment time joking with his assistant during my appointment time right in front of my face while I sat in stunned, disbelieving silence. Then, when I asked him questions after that, he looked at me with bulging eyes and told me that he had to go to see another patient, - and so he RAN away. ALSO, I had made it as clear as can be to the Office staff and to him that the VA would be paying for everything. NEVERTHELESS his office charged my Medicare for the exam (which requires that I pay a percentage of the charge). Not a professional and careful practice at all.

VERY FRUSTRATING EXPERIENCE!…read more Although I liked Dr. Thomas himself, who was very kind and professional during my exam, I have to give 1 star due to my frustrating experience with his reception staff who run the entire process of glasses and contact ordering. Judy rushed me as though I was inconveniencing her; and she was also sarcastic when I asked about frame options, and what specifically my insurance coverage offered. Later, it got worse. After a month of waiting (missed phone calls, and no return calls), all while they already had my money, I am finally told they have a sample set of contacts ready for me to come pick up. I was told I should wear them for a week before I place a large year-supply order, in case something went wrong. So I just followed their directions, and said okay. I verified the brand of contacts over the phone, which is the same brand I have been wearing for 2 years now. Sheila ensured me they had my supply waiting and all I had to do was come and pick them up. However, when I arrived to pick up my 1-week sample supply, it was a completely different brand and I was told I HAD to schedule a fitting appointment for a fee of about $100. Judy argued with me about the brand saying I HAD to have the new brand because the doctor said so, even though I'd just spoken to another clerk (Sheila) on the phone the day before who verified my preferred brand. WHAT THE HECK?!?!?! Why is no one on the same page here??? And WHY do I need a "fitting" for the EXACT same pair and EXACT same prescription contacts that I've had for the last 2 years?!?!?! When I asked that, she said "No, that's not your old prescription. It changed. Look, it's written right here. You need a fitting." Well, I think I know my own prescription since it's on the cover of every single contact I open every day! I could not believe this woman was trying to convince me that my prescription was different for the last two years!!!! Well, regardless of that rediculous argument, they didn't ever say there would be an additional fee until I was "stuck" having to pay it, and "stuck" with a brand I didn't even want! I was so frustrated and upset that I asked for a reimbursement of my money, which they'd been holding for a month, and a copy of my prescription so I could go elsewhere. Here's the cherry on top: Judy refused to give me my contacts prescription. Even though I paid for an exam and went through an entire exam, she would only give me my glasses prescription and specifically wrote on the paper "GLASSES Rx ONLY". The only way I could get my contacts Rx through them would be to pay the triple figure "fitting" fee. REDICULOUS!!! RIP OFF!!!! PLEASE - GO ELSEWHERE!!!! I wasted an ENTIRE month of my life and got nothing out of it but a big headache.

I had an eye emergency last month and they could not fit me in with my regular doctor…read moreDr. Kirk, but they were able to send me to eye care of San Diego, their partner in Hillcrest. I will review that separately. But I came back here for a follow up with Dr. Kirk, and it was terrific to be back in this office. It is spacious and clean and everyone is extremely nice. Luis did the beginning of my eye exam and was funny and patient as the bright lights shone in my eyes. And Dr. Kirk was extremely helpful when he came in. I intend this to be my regular ophthalmologist going forward. Dr. Kirk has been terrific over the years and told me what I needed to watch for as i got older, so when it happened I knew to call and was lucky they could get me into the other office right away. But I will still come here in the future!

Unfortunately I had to drop some stars because of the office manager that runs the front desk. She seems pleasant but has this attitude I found very rude. She scolded me for lack of a better word for not calling to get my contact lens prescription instead of calling first. Which I don't see the difference. Then she asked why I wasn't purchasing the contacts through their office, and when I told her they are cheaper online she gave me a real bad attitude. I also did not realize until my recent trip to Lens Crafters that their office is a bit outdated. They have to send glasses out to get lenses done. When Lens Crafters does it right in their facilities. All in all I will not be returning to this office.

I was surprised with how pleasant the experience was and how quickly everything was processed. After browsing around and picking my glasses the whole insurance processing stuff and face measurement was a very quick process and I was done with another 35 minutes to spare for lunch! :-) the lady that helped me was very welcoming and nice! The prices were reasonable I totally recommend this place! Quick and painless!
